I still felt like playing a Shooter because of all of the BF6 discussions, but I didn't want to get the Sniper Elite bundle, so I just downloaded BF2 instead and played against bots for a bit. It took a few minutes before I got the hang of it again, but I after that I felt right at home.

To all the Windows 10 users out there, let's be honest here: when October comes around, what are we doing? Are we switching to Windows 11, switching to Linux, or extending Windows 10 support for a year free?

I'm probably just extending the Windows 10 support because I don't want to spend the time upgrading to 11 or switching to Linux right now. I don't have anything against 11, it's on my work laptop now and it was installed on the second-hand PC we bought, so I'll probably switch eventually, but only when I really need to.

It would be nice if Steam could add a release date range slider to their search. My wife's laptop is pretty underpowered but it can play non-demanding games just fine, like Minecraft and Roblox. I feel like if Steam just added a release date slider, I could find games we can play together that will run perfectly fine on her laptop. I can always look this stuff online but it would also be nice if Steam could do it for us :p

Release date is a pretty poor indicator for minimum system requirements though unless you exclusively look at AAA titles. But if you really want to you could use Steamdb instead, they do allow filtering on release date.

UGH!

I had my clockwork base all planned out and about 50 percent constructed when I realized two major problems with base building that will prevent me from completing it.

It looks kind of stupid in its current state, but it's not going to be worked on anymore, so it is what it is:

full

The gears (not finished) were going to be ornithopter landing pads with pentashields over the tops.

And lighting is non-existent in this game. Here is a picture that I actually brightened up of the crafting table area inside of the base.

full

That is significantly brighter than it really is.

Ha, I wasted some expensive duraluminum. You see, I was out mining aluminum in the buggy, when suddenly I woke up to find that I had kamikazed an NPC base, and they were standing around the buggy shooting me. I have a skill that lets me get away, but not while I'm in the buggy, so I exited the buggy and promptly died. Normally, you can revive yourself and keep going, but since I was the only person there, they all ran to finish me off once I went down.

So I chose to spawn back at the base. Somehow, flying over there and killing them all in the usual manner didn't seem like an appropriate response, so I crafted the rocket launcher component for the Scout Ornithopter and then crafted about 30 rockets. Then I went over and blew them all to hell. Then I picked up my ornithopter with the magical vehicle recall tool and drove the buggy (which can't be picked up by the tool) home.

The reason it's a waste is because I'll probably never use them again. That's what the assault ornithopter is for. I didn't take the assault ornithopter because it can't be picked up, so I would have had to have left a vehicle behind.

Think I'm still feeling a strong desire for a game that's mostly gameplay focused, but just haven't figured out what that is yet.
Elden Ring!
Seems like I want something semi-relaxed...
Cheesy rune-farming in Elden Ring!

I got all set up to update my 10 to 11 months ago. The update has been sitting in my system tray since then. I just don't want to mess with it. It's a hassle, it's slightly risky, and it doesn't provide me with a single thing that I want. To me, it's a small step backward.

It DOES have things to offer under the hood. TLS 1.3 jumps to mind.

Yeah, just kind of feels like I'm playing ER by default right now. I think really what it is is I just need to do something else besides gaming right now.

Still wanting it in my downtime though, so I think that's a little where my conflict comes in. ER is fun, but I think I want something a little more chill when I'm just relaxing after doing stuff.

Finally took down the Fell Omen. Between my two knight guys and a sorcerer you can summon (that seemed to think he was a tank), it was fairly easy. I ended up dumping a lot of fireballs into the guy, and he only really tried to attack me at the very end of the battle.

I've been pushing the limits of exploration, too, going places I really shouldn't be. You know you've gone too far when an elite enemy nearly one-shots you with a normal attack.

The game sure has a weird way of doing levels of items. Want to upgrade your weapon, use a smithing stone. Want to upgrade it past level 3? Use a smithing stone 2. Not two smithing stones, smithing stone 2 is a different kind of item. Same thing with upgrading summons. Most games would use small/medium/large/... or something to distinguish them, but not Elden Ring. <shrug>

Now I've got that whole castle to explore!

I played a bit more of Battlefield 2, getting a good nostalgia fix from the small maps I used to play (I used to only be able to play 16-player maps with bots). I also tried some of the bigger maps, but then it feels like I hardly have an impact on the fight.

I've enjoyed it, but I think I'm done with the game again, especially after it suddenly crashed halfway through a match yesterday.

I don't think I'll be going back to Terraria either. The loop of "upgrade equipment, build arena, kill next boss" has lost its luster.

I need to find something new to play. Something that doesn't require much thinking and isn't too long.

I've ended-up spending about $25 on games the past couple of days; still failing spending less money this year, but I guess it's not a surprise anymore...

Anyway, I picked-up Subnautica: Below Zero on Friday for $7.50. My oldest has been asking me for it, as he loves the original game and has played Below Zero a little bit at friends houses. I figured, I enjoyed the first game enough and this was pretty cheap as a sale price and I'll want to play it as well at some point, so I grabbed it.

I also saw on PC Gamer that Robocop was again on sale via Humble Bundle. I've added this game to my cart so many times and never bothered to purchase it even at $5, but finally decided to just go for it; seemed like it would be a solid Steam Deck game, though it also doesn't seem to start on my Deck at all. I'm sure I could resolve the issue, but I may just use it as an excuse to play it on my laptop instead.

Lastly, I picked-up this game, Vomitorium, which wasn't on sale, but looked interesting. I've played about 2-hours now and initially found the art style pretty off-putting and the gameplay so-so, but the further I've played it, the more I'm enjoying it. You can see a very clear influence from Super Metroid, but also Dark Souls. I'm currently having a good time exploring with it and excited that I kind of ran-up against a wall of a duo of bosses and decided to see what else I could find; I had been thinking I'd seen everywhere up to that point, but I looked at the map and discovered several paths that were now accessible to me since I picked-up the double jump. Anyway, worth checking out if you like Metroidvanias and if you're a sucker for a first person perspective like I am.

Stormveil is what they called a 'legacy dungeon'. The level design in that area is very close to what you find in the older Dark Souls games. If you have fun there then the older games are definitely worth checking out, if you have the will for it after Elden Ring, its a really big game.

Did you find any angry bears on your travels?

This is actually one of my primary complaints with Elden Ring.

It was cute in my first from game, but at his point I'm tired of picking up a bunch of random bullshit which has no explanation. I'm certainly not going to look at my inventory every time I pick something up and definitely not going to wiki every item that has a vague description. I'm ER it's all just so much more tedious than in the smaller Dark Souls games.

It's different, that's for sure. My gold runes (gold rules type 1) almost hit the max of 99, so I'm starting to get into a policy of getting a bit over halfway to the next level, then "eating" gold rules to get just enough for the next level, taking the sting out of death. But still, having no clue whether there's a save point close or not (and which direction is is) can be maddening! Plus, the place is HUGE!
Did you find any angry bears on your travels?
Heck yeah. I ignored them like I would any other bear - except a certain bear that was disguising itself as a pathetic zombie. That one killed me. Sneaky devs.

They've dropped me into a nest full of rats, too. (I *knew* that one had to be a trap! There's no way these devs are just going to just put an unguarded chest in the second room - or any other room, for that matter. But what kind of trap? It cost 2500 runes to find out.)

Soon 2500 runes will seem paltry, so don't sweat it too much!

I lost 140000 over two deaths earlier in the week and realistically, that is only two level-ups for me anyway.

Also, somehow missed this part of your post before, but I'm again going to recommend:

Seems pretty short, not too difficult and is just turn your brain off (mostly) exploration.

So I went looking for a new game to play. First I tried out Hardest. It's a roguelike deckbuilding game based off of Rock, Paper, Scissors and the concept is pretty interesting, but that's really all it is. There didn't seem to be a way to check your deck and there were too many times where I didn't understand what happened and no way to figure it out afterwards.

Then I went through the tutorial for To The Kingdom, but it just looks like a worse version of Catan that only has multiplayer against real people, so I didn't play it after finishing the tutorial.

Then I tried a game of 5D Chess With Multiverse Time Travel, but despite winning my very first game I had no interest in doing that again.

Which finally got me to Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal. Truly a perfect game for when you want something that doesn't require too much effort. You can pause at any time and still plan your moves and once you get past the initial challenge of each map there's usually no way you can lose.

Then in the evening I played Barotrauma with two friends and they made me the captain for the first time, but somehow this was the best attempt we'd made so far. Probably because I don't take nearly as many risks as either of my friends do. Though the 4 NPCs tagging along didn't hurt either, they're quite competent.

I've ended-up spending about $25 on games the past couple of days; still failing spending less money this year, but I guess it's not a surprise anymore...

Subnautica: Below Zero has been on my wishlist for quite a while now, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm curious what your thoughts are once you play it.

Thank you for the suggestions! I loved The Stanley Parable and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, but I don't feel like replaying either (even if I haven't played the Ultra Deluxe version). Overload seems interesting, but a bit too hectic for me right now.

Also, somehow missed this part of your post before, but I'm again going to recommend:

I appreciate the recommendation, but it also seems a bit too much (plus I'm not a big fan of metroidvanias).

Holy moly. I dont think Ive ever had that many consumable runes!

The tension of not knowing whether your coming up on a Site of Grace or whether you should backtrack and 'lose' all that progress is one of the things I both hate and love.

One thing that I do appreciate is that although the enemies respawn and you drop runes, any chest or items you find stay with you so you dont need to explore areas a second time, even if you die before finding Grace. You can do a suicide run to grab items without killing enemies and not necessarily have to go back again.

People hated those bears! Theres plenty more traps to come, dont worry.

It's a hassle, it's slightly risky, and it doesn't provide me with a single thing that I want. To me, it's a small step backward.
Agreed, the only way to mitigate risk would be to do a clean install I think. Then you have to go about messing with backups and such, reinstalling all your programs and games, personalizing and configuring, it is a hassle that usually takes a good few hours for me each time I do one. A lot of the AI stuff doesn't appeal to me, and I would want to be completely erased from my PC, not just disabled which I believe is the option Win11 gives.
Release date is a pretty poor indicator for minimum system requirements though unless you exclusively look at AAA titles. But if you really want to you could use Steamdb instead, they do allow filtering on release date.
I halfway agree, because as long as you go back far enough, most games should work on her laptop lol. Anything before 2010 yeah, but beyond that there's more nuance to it. It ran Tomb Raider 2013 surprisingly well at Medium settings 1080p holding a fairly steady 45fps, so that is what prompted me to think about the release date slider. I keep forgetting about using SteamDB to search for games, they have much more advanced filters to really fine-tune your search.
Also worth noting that in the majority of games I play, I had a performance increase in Linux. This isn't super readable, but these are some benchmarks of mine, Linux performance on the lefthand sides and Windows on the right.
That's pretty incredible actually, I wonder if I would see similar results. I've read a few articles on comparing Windows 10 vs Windows 11 gaming performance, and although these were always within the margin of error, Win11 was typically a very small bit slower. Again, I'm taking like 1-2fps decrease, but if you're playing a game that can barely hit 60fps, that can show up as a larger difference. Realistically, I would not notice it running slower, but I would still rather do anything I can to boost performance. I may dual-boot Linux Mint on my PC to try it out, though that may require either creating a partition or installing a new drive, neither of which I feel like doing at the moment.

I tried out some new games this weekend. One of which was Planet Crafter. I am unsure if this is hitting the spot for me, it's casual and relaxing sure, but also a bit boring... I'm right under the 2 hour mark so I'm unsure if I will refund or not. I should have just tried the demo first. It's really not a bad game at all, evidenced by the Overwhelmingly Positive reviews, just not sure if it's what I want to play at the moment. The survival aspects are easy and not difficult to manage at all, but I wish for a bit more challenge and risk/stakes in a way.

I then downloaded Fallout 76 again. I used to love this game a lot, specifically around 2019-2020. At that point the game had mostly recovered from it's abysmal launch, the most pressing bugs were fixed, and they were adding in new content. I had lots of great memories playing this game, I really love how it was PVE focused with *some* PVP if you wanted it (two players had to both consent to a PVP duel). Players were always friendly, always willing to help out in any way you needed. The Vending Machine system was so awesome, allowing you to set up a store of your own goods then advertise it on the map as a fast travel point. There was something really special about this game during that time.

As time went on, I tried many times to get back into the game, but it just never quiet felt the same. The game always had a lot of bugs that took way too long to address, performance is still quite bad even after exceeding recommended specs, combat always felt pretty lackluster and only now is getting any attention, and so much more. The worst of all was the greed of Bethesda reaching every corner of the game. There were always paid cosmetics and cosmetic DLC bundles to purchase, but sometime in 2019-2020 they introduced the Fallout 1 subscription, which in many ways was pay-to-win, just like Elder Scrolls Online's subscription. It gave you major benefits that made the game so much easier and more convenient to play, and after you get a taste of it, it's hard to play the game without the subscription. They continued to push this model more and more, making the game a whole lot less fun without it. On top of that, the inclusion of many live-service game elements like a massive abundance of timed world events really made the game lose it's charm. Such a shame, it was really fun at one point, but now kind of bland and boring.

After this, I needed something that was just pure GAME, no fuss about it, so I booted up Battlefield 3 for the first time in maybe a decade. The only populated server with decent ping was located in Spain, so I hopped in and was immediately transported Back to Karkand (see what I did there). The game... looks worse than I remember. The AA was terrible even at max 8x setting. Textures were muddied, shadows jaggy, and AO was harsh. I remember thinking this game looked like real life in 2011 lol. However, the spirit of the game was still there, and before I knew it I was in the gunner seat of a tank picking off enemies and hopping out to repair when we got damaged, just like the good ol days. I was surprised to see this game is still around, but that's just a testament to the importance of dedicated servers. I had a blast for the two hours I spent with it this weekend.

Following an amazing all-tech getaway i won through a couples bowling league (showers, room, hottub AND toilet all electronic controlled!) I came home to a relaxing end-of-weekend time of Killing Floor 3, Helldivers 2 and Battlefield 6 beta 2nd weekend.

The battlefield beta, even though i didnt get this much time around, but overall from both weekends, was pretty solid for me, 7.5/8 out of 10. Yes i had a string of bad teams, yes there are problems (TTK, Map size, menus, secure boot thing etc.) but it was fun. The shotgun is a blast to use even if it is a little too powerful (but shotguns are SUPPOSED to be when you are up close or even medium range with a slug) and the gunplay is snappy and solid.

Killing Floor 3 and Helldivers 2 were just my usual jaunts with the family. Ran a campaign on Helldivers 2, looking forward to xbox helldivers joining. Itll be fun pulling them through a level 10 (max level) drop when their character level is 10-50 lol (max is 150 which im at). Then, we beat the 'weekly mutation' after 4 tries in Killing Floor and it was exhausting.

I've also been dabbling more and more in using my new switch. I downloaded a bunch of demos (shinobi, ninja gaiden) to see how it feels and looks and if i can actually play on a handheld, to my surprise i can, even for my big hands.

I bought a 500gb microsd (the switch only has 25 gb of storage on it!) and it seems im going to have to either pony up 60 for Mario Kart 8 (thats 8 years old) or try to find it on sale. Sad i cant play the new one but im not too complain-y since i got the switch free. So we'll see what i wind up doing. I am probably going to buy the new shinobi for it at least.

I played a bit more of Battlefield 2...
Funny, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole this weekend wanting to play some old BF games. I did a lot of searching for ways to play online in 2025, and there are definitely some ways, it just didn't seem that worth it to me. Then, I realized I don't even have a CD drive to install the games, but I could always nab it off the Internet Archive. I realized I had BF1942 on the EA app, so I tried that, but that version has a lot of issues that require patching, then modding to get working online, I didn't want to do all of that.

One thing I didn't try this time around is getting BF2 Project Reality working. That mod is still around and has a good number of players, I even tried it just a few years ago. I may give that a shot again, not the purest BF2 vanilla experience but still a lot of fun.

Definitely need a separate drive for Linux, since Windows and Linux use different formats. That's what I was doing for a bit with my laptop to test out the differences in performance and such.

Also at you and @Pifanjr have either of you guys tried Ravenfield? It's singleplayer with bots only, but I feel it really captures the experience of 1942 and 2 from back in the day, especially if you played with just bots with any regularity.

I've known about that game for a long time but never knew it was singleplayer only, now my interest has risen. I'll add it to my wishlist and wait for a sale. I used to play BF1942, BF Vietnam, BF2, and BF2142 primarily offline with bots and I have lots of fond memories of that. It wasn't until BF Bad Company 1 and 2 where they really upgraded the online systems to more closely match CoD at the time and have stuck with that system ever since. Of course BF games have always had online modes but starting with the Bad Company games they were much more "consolized" and easier to find servers.

I need to find something new to play. Something that doesn't require much thinking and isn't too long.
I recommend Monster Train or its sequel, which is on Game Pass. Once you start a battle, you have to finish it to save progress, but it doesn't last too long, so I definitely consider this good for short play sessions. Also, as far as requiring thinking goes, I haven't thought anything in months, and I'm doing fine :)

@Pifanjr Maybe something completely different might be fun to try out. I play it from time to time as it has fast rounds, fun weapons, and overall a free good game.

I have a Switch Lite just sitting in a drawer somewhere completely unused. Your post made me look up modding it and yeah... not about to install a mod chip into the console. What is this, the early 2000s? I guess I figured someone would have an immediate hack/exploit, such as this:

The Switch does secede the Xbox 360 by a good 12 years so that could be one reason why.

I find myself doing this time to time too. Even though our community here is small, the general discussion threads definitely fly by sometimes. I'll step away from the forum for just a couple days to come back to 20+ notifications and 50+ forum posts made. I hope your doctors appointment goes the way you want it to and that you start to feel better soon.

Totally get where you're coming from, dxchase. The Switch has definitely aged well in terms of handheld comfort and game variety. I was skeptical too at first, but it’s surprising how playable it is even for longer sessions. That 500GB microSD will definitely come in handy — those game sizes sneak up fast.

And yeah, it’s wild how pricey some of the older titles still are. Nintendo tax, I guess. Keep an eye on sales though; Mario Kart 8 pops up with a discount from time to time, especially around holidays or Directs.

Also feel you on the modding thing — I remember when a softmod was as simple as a save file exploit, but those days are mostly gone. Still, interesting to see what’s possible now even if it’s a bit much to get into.

Hope you end up enjoying Shinobi! Curious to hear your thoughts if you grab it.

Still playing Path of exile, i've got to the end game and early mapping. my character finall has finally switched to volcanic fissure and so far the results have been most promising. Will see what its like on the higher maps though, so far the sunder ability whilst destructive, isn't cutting it with most of the mercs now more higher powered and just beat me to the final punch.

onto other news, Far cry 6 GOTY edition on steam is now under £20. A pleasing price, but after FC5 i don't think the game is going to be that much more different from the last few iterations. I have seen the base game for less then a 5 quid, but i think i'll hold out for a while.

on the hand held front, still playing trails of cold steel and i'm on the final chapter. the Chapter 6 final boss against C was nothing short of harrowing. The mechanics meant that most of my characters just kept knocked down and spent more time healing rather then attacking. Burned through a lot of my good healing equipment. infuriating.
