The PC Gamer Best PC Builds - $500 Min Spec Console Killer

Welcome to very first PC Gamer Best PC Builds competition!

We're down to the final five. Vote now to decide the winner in each category. Here are the top five min spec console killer builds:

It's an open secret that here at PC Gamer we love PC Building. Building your own PC makes for a fun weekend project, and nets you the biggest performance bang for your buck. It's hard to match the sweet satisfaction of customizing each component to fit your specifications and needs. We want to share the joy of PC Building with the entire community, which is why we're challenging you to submit your best performing builds at the lowest possible price in a number of categories.

The competition will run from April 17th till April 27th. This means you have 10 days to submit your builds!

We've extended the submission period until May 4th! May the fourth be with you and may your builds bring order to the galaxy!

At the end of the competition the winners and their builds will be featured on the PC Gamer home page. Submit your build and get that clout!

This is the $500 Min Spec Console Killer Category
Please submit builds with the best gaming performance for $500 or less. We will favor console sized submissions, ie. m-ATX and m-ITX builds.

How does it work?
We're gonna break this competition down into 4 parts:
  1. Submit your builds
  2. After a week of submissions, the PC Gamer staff will pick their top 5 in each category. We will judge primarily on quality of components, price, and theoretical system performance.
  3. Users vote on their favorite build of the top 5.
  4. We feature the winning builds in each category on the PC Gamer homepage.

How do I submit a build?

  1. Head to the PCPartPicker System Builder.
  2. Build your system!
  3. When you're all set, smash that BB code button
    EFYHjue.png
  4. Copy the BB code
  5. Head to this thread, respond hit the BB code toggle in the tool bar
    KEAhrBy.png
  6. Paste the BB code and post your thread!

Ground Rules - Read this or you will be disqualified :)

  • Only one build per budget category, per user. Multiple builds from a single user or duplicate accounts will be disqualified.
  • Do not go over budget.
  • Use list prices only: coupons, rebates, bundles or any other limited-time offers will not be accepted.
  • Do not include shipping or tax in your final budget.
  • Do not include the Operating System, Monitor or VR Headset, Keyboard, Mouse or Gamepad.
  • All builds must have a name.
  • Do not put your forum handle in the name of your build, and avoid odd capitalizations & symbols.
  • We encourage users to use PCPartPicker's System Build for speedy construction.
  • Do not post a link to your build, but rather please be sure to export as BBCode for a quick copy/paste to the forums

Here are links to all three build categories:

$500 Min Spec Console Killer
$1000 Streaming and Gaming Build
$2000 Ultra High Quality Cyberpunk 2077 Build

Good luck and may the best build win!

Questions :)

1) We're allowed to edit our builds?
For instance if prices change so as to offer something more competitive for the price during the competition period.

2) How do we treat out of stock listings?

I don't mean blatantly discontinued or very niche products that may never be seen again, but rather products which are just temporarily out of stock and obviously will get restocked (like modern CPUs). If we're ignoring time-limited things like rebates I assume we can also select temporarily out of stock products. Common sense required obvs.

Also, there's a fair chance people will submit a build based on X component at Y price that is then out of stock temporarily on that vendor by the time the competition closes...

3) Not even 1 cent over budget I assume?

4) Is there an easy way to exclude shipping, and rebates, from a partpicker list?

Obviously we can manually enter the price, but that's faff and will make it a touch tricky to verify entries...
Do we just post the list as generated by PC Partpicker, including shipping and rebates, and just type in the final cost excluding those? At least you can check the maths that way.

5) Amazon marketplace sellers disallowed? (they should be tbf - unless they are the manufacturer selling via Amazon)

.. btw, it's really hard for people outside the USA to reliably sort prices from Amazon.com. Also certain other sites which see you're not in the USA and then refuse to show you pricing if you go the site because they don't ship to you. Perhaps competition's only intended for USA entrants.

These are all really good questions!
1) We're allowed to edit our builds?
You're allowed to edit your builds up until the final submission date, which is the 27th.

2) How do we treat out of stock listings?
You cannot use components that are out of stock.

3) Not even 1 cent over budget I assume?
Any builds over budget will be disqualified!

4) Is there an easy way to exclude shipping, and rebates, from a partpicker list?
Also certain other sites which see you're not in the USA and then refuse to show you pricing if you go the site because they don't ship to you.
This is one of the reasons why we request participants to remove shipping and rebates. This allows a more global group of people to participate on a fair playing field. To remove rebates go to your preferences under your account and uncheck include mail in rebate. There is no way to automatically remove shipping, but PCPartPicker shows the base total at the bottom of the build list.

Are the prices static upon submission or do we need to check that a component price hasn't increased beyond budget prior to the 27th? For example, a component is $300 when submitted but goes up to $325 at some point after that and possibly prior to the 27th.

And also what if something goes out of stock between now and then (as I asked)
The price that you secure at the time of submission is always acceptable. This remains true for items that were in stock at the time of submission.

*Motherboard B450 with an 8 pin motherboard connector, should be able to provide a mild OC. Plus 4 ram slots so if there is a part you really don't like and need to free up a couple buck$, drop the RAM to 2 x 4GB sticks (still keeps dual channel) and use the cash ($15-20) where you like. Then upgrade to 16GB in future easily with the two unused slots.

**M.2 PCI NVMe selected is rare combo of both cheap and has a DDR4 DRAM cache

***Went back & forth on GPU, in the end the 8GB RX580 is probably a bit of "future-proofing" memory requirement wise (ironically with older hardware), but if efficiency is your game then 4GB options like the 5500XT or 1650S work as well

Thoughts: would have liked a 1600AF but alas, it wasn't on PCPartPicker. Probably just out of budget anyways. 8GB ram is a shame but at thos this budget 16 just isn't worth it. Finally, a 450W psu is more than enough, and EVGA W1/N1/BT and Corsair VS/CV are trash. I wouldn't recommend them in anything with a discrete GPU. Pretty sure those are all group regulated, and some are rated for only 25 deg C?!

Rating vs what they actually do:

These kinds of PSUs, and the VS series, are more than fine for a very basic gaming setup, with a dGPU. VS is widely used by (reputable) system integrators as well. There's a limit to their place for sure, but it's fair to argue this kind of build is within that limit.

Though ofc, the competition is such that anyone can recommend anything for any reason!

Also PCG are doing this competition, albeit for very obvious reasons, at a time where PSU availability and pricing is all over the place. And other component too. Half of what I posted is already out of stock. That's okay, apparently, because it was in stock when i posted it, even though anyone trying to build it a few days later will be darn well out of luck. :) But especially PSU availability seems bad right now, so there's an element of beggars vs choosers when posting a build.
