Steam Autumn Sale Discussion Thread

Steam Autumn Sale -- September 29th to October 6th @ 10AM PT

PCG Articles:

Anything specific you guys are looking to pick up during the sale?

Spider-Man: Remastered is on sale for only $30. I haven't played this game before, but I know it's considered one of the best exclusives on Playstation, and the Remastered edition makes it that much better for PC. Not a huge superhero fan but I've always like Spider-Man, and the open world web slinging looks so much fun. Very tempted, but going to wait a bit to see if anything else piques my interest more.

It's pretty good, but ultimately didn't really hook me like I hoped it would. I'm not much of a superhero fan either.

Moving around the city is fun, but it still mostly feels like a stock Ubi open world game with all the little tasks to do and things to collect.

I'm going to try not to buy anything. I've spent a lot of money this year already and much of what I've bought, I haven't even even touched yet. Not to mention, aside from Robocop, I'm actually playing something I've had in my library for several years now and I'm not ready to drop it and play anything else yet anyway.

That said, I did see something that looked fun and I'm thinking I may spend the $20 and make my wife play it, so I can watch her. The Sys Reqs are actually low enough that it should run on my HTPC in my Den, so it would be easy to watch.

I was surprised to see Black Myth: Wukong is not on sale. It was in the summer sale. <shrug>

I don't need much to cover me until December. Eternal Strands is tempting me:

Jedi Survivor is good and cheap now

It might be time to try Judgement, a Yakuza'ish game from the same studio

And.... and those are all action RPGs!? Arg. Maybe
Eh. Idunno. Persona 5 has gotten cheap enough to experiment with - I'm dubious that I'll like it after bouncing off Persona 4 so hard.

I still need to go back and finish the first game. Seemed cool enough, but I petered out around Kashyyk or however it's spelled.

I did end-up buying I Expect You To Die, from my previous post, thankfully it runs great on my HTPC (i7-7700/6650XT). My wife actually ended-up playing for a little over an hour, doing two levels, both of which were very fun. It was fun to be able to sit next to her and watch what was happening on the TV and offer advice and she had a great time until we both were feeling too tired to continue going.

Also picked-up this, because it was already in my cart and cheap enough. It's apparently a spiritual successor to Iron Lung, which is great (and I'll recommend here too).

And I also may as well recommend one of my favorite games of all time, as it's at the lowest price it usually goes to:

I've been curious about PEAK ever since I saw a gameplay video from it. It seems like it would be great as the next game to play with my friends once we've finished with Barotrauma, but I'll have to see how interested my friends are.

Subnautica: Below Zero is now below €10 and I currently don't have any games in my library I'm especially excited for, so I might pick that up too.

Forgot about this game, now I'm very intrigued to try it. Very tempting right now.

I ended up buying Peaks of Yore for $11.39

It's a first person climbing game with a nice little story of a bunch of people getting together for a mountain climbing competition. The controls are hard and require a lot of precision, but as you progress you get new items to help the climb like stakes and ropes. You meet a lot of interesting characters along the way, all with something funny and encouraging to say. The game is broken into levels and you return to your cabin between each climb. At the cabin people often stop by to have a chat and you get some small decorations as well as new items. So far it's very fun, I've had my eye on this for a while.

Some more pick-ups:

GreedFall - Gold Edition
Only picked this up because it was so cheap, though I doubt I will play it. Tried to play it with my PC connected to my bedroom TV and the text was very tiny, no option to increase size.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Yakuza's turn based combat game, very fun with a great story so far.

Monster Train
Again, picked it up since it's so cheap, though I may actually play it. I really like Slay The Spire so I hope this scratches that same itch.

Shakedown: Hawaii
A modern GTA-like, complete with open world, tons of missions, customization options, chaotic action and more. Played this a long time ago on a friends Switch and have wanted to dive in fully ever since.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora
I really love Far Cry, so this is basically Far Cry but Avatar themed. Unfortunately I had to refund it as the performance was terrible on my PC. I could get 60FPS on Medium with FSR and Frame Gen on, though it caused really massive artifacts and intense blurriness, I did not want to deal with it. DLSS Quality got a better image, though it struggled to hold at 60FPS on Low. Disappointing, but it will only be cheaper once I get a GPU capable of playing it.

One more pickup today:

Skin Deep

Skin Deep is an immersive sim game with tons of different systems to interact and synergize with. Apparently it's got stealth, hacking, sneezing, cats, roguelike features, and more. It seems to be very true to the Immersive Sim name/genre, which has gotten me excited to play it since it first came out earlier this year. I'm also a big fan of Blendo Games, they've made Quadrilateral Cowboy and 30 Flights of Loving, both fantastic games as well. One thing that I love about their games is that they're almost all made in the idTech 4, the same engine DOOM 3 is built on.

Totally random but since I'm on the topic of Blendo Games, one of their very early projects Gravity Bone from 2008 had a huge impact on me as a kid and I implore others to check it out free on Steam:

May be my last one, maybe not...

Promise Mascot Agency
Got it mainly because the Steam reviews are overwhelmingly positive and it's one of the highest PCG reviews of the year.

I still haven't played Paradise Killer, but I have it and I should. I know how great people say it is, but this one seems a bit more my style. One reviewer described it as basically the real estate management mini game from Yakuza 0 but with mascots instead, that's all I needed to hear to get it. Plus I got an extra little discount from already owning Paradise Killer.

Not that I’m disappointed by the sale, however I only had one email with two items from my wish list on sale.

My wishlist is over 1000 games (many to be released still), and only having two on sale is quite remarkable! Doesn’t help that the weather is still nice and my kid wants to do things and play his own games with me.

Maybe the winter sale will be as great as usual, and it’s not that far off any longer.
