I use 2 throwaway words to build up the letters each word has. So 7 is the minimum possible for me
Well you have got 1 x 6, so it's
possible
I go the same way with 2 starting words, and 7 my best target also. My three 6s have come from:
1. First word being one of the words;
2. First word providing enough intel to get 2 of the words which used very similar letters, and then the vertical clues combining with luck;
3. Filling in 4 of the words also fully filling the 5th.
But yeah, 7 is the best possible without a very lucky break.
