I would be how I am in the game. I tend to go the more diplomatic side but when it come to truly terrifying enemies I am a warrior all the way. Like most people when in that kind of situation (like its a totally normal thing) I like to get to know my potential enemy or ally so spy like work is usually necessary.
 
If you are forcing me to choose I would have to say conqueror.
But I would try to be smart about it, conquer my enemies and leave rich potential trading partners alone.
 
I think you would have to be a little of both. Easier to negotiate if they fear you to some degree, but also know that you can be reasonable. That is a hard line to toe though. If I had to choose though, conqueror means less dealing with pompous leaders, so I would go with that.
