Hello everyone, I used to be a regular gamer but now I've put it on the backbone as I'm alot more busier now. I still am able to sneak in one or maybe two sessions a week.

I have read many posts in my life. I have seen many movies in my life and have read many books in my life.

This is probably the saddest thing I have ever read or seen.

2 sessions a week? Even during busy times, I must do at least 2 hours a day! Even if it means doing a 2am mission just to remember that I do still have games.

These days all I use for gaming is a bog standard desktop PC with an AMD APU, and I don't go for big AAA games now. Mainly ancient arcade games, similarly ancient 8-bit computer games, casual 'brain stimulating' puzzle/board games, M & B Warband, and a few other odds and ends.

I look forward to posting on here, and maybe discovering some more games that I might like. I suspect that a lot of good games get lost in the 100, 000+ on sale on Steam. I sometimes stumble upon a game I really like purely by chance.

Many of us are (As you say) over the hill gamers. There are several discussions about old games etc that we grew up with. Just have a look around on the forums. Yes the arcades....LMAO remember standing sideways playing the Olympics and there was a diver game (Cannot remember it's name), Mario, Island boy, Pac man, 1942 and this list goes on because my grandkids play it on the tv regularly. Also why the names are still fresh in my head.

There was a huge split in the industry years ago, where games started turning away from Arcade. Thats where the gamers started picking genre's that they felt comfortable with. Some stayed with the 8bits (I still love playing Pokémon diamond (Or ruby)) but I personally ended up in the "Adventure" genre which by itself later expanded into millions of different Genres. My switch came with "legend of Kyrandia" and finally got hooked in the Genre with Ultima 8. Now it is referred to as "Open World" and be anything from Fantasy to adventure to Horror to shooter.

But whether you are playing 8bits, 16 bits or the latest or greatest you are still gaming.

I still enjoy firing up quite a few old arcade games, mostly shooters. They're also mostly pre-continue feature (ie Insert more coins to continue). I enjoy the likes of Asteroids, Black Widow, Centipede, Galaga, Gorf, Phoenix, Robotron 2084, Galaxian (although I actually prefer the NES version I got in a PC compilation over the arcade version now), Pooyan, etc. etc.

One reason I still play games such as those is the fact I can just play them any time without having to consult any manuals or bother with cutscenes (don't like cutscenes, just want to play the games!). Aiming for high scores on a single credit is sufficient.

I hope I never have to give up gaming completely. I suspect a lot of non-gamers think of all videogames as violent and fast moving (and those arcade games certainly fit that description!), but there are some excellent puzzle/board games out there that do not require you to react quickly and give your brain a good workout. As I said, it isn't that easy to find the gems among all the dross. I have found a few, though.

Not trying to change your ways but you might have missed some changes in the gaming industry over the years.

Manuals, well you are very lucky if you do get one. Cannot remember the last time I even saw a Game manual. They pretty much got discontinued and replaced with a "Trainer" built into the game.

Cut-scenes, agreed I do not like cut-scenes either. It pretty much kills your focus on what you were busy doing. Since there are millions of gamers feeling the same way, most (Not all but most) have the ability to switch off the cut-scenes. You do however miss a huge chunk on the story line, but the option is there for you to switch it off. Most do a play through with the story line and then a second play through without the story line.

The games (mostly the ones I play) is where your character is an actual puzzle as well. They call it Character development, but with trial and error you build a character that suites your gaming style. Something I hated back in the days is playing as a Wizard where all I wanted was a shield and a sword and a way to not get detected. E.g. Ultima 8 was a pre-set Character, and you could change your weapons but what you got is what you got, as opposed to say something like Never winter nights, where you could pick a specific class (Skill set), like being a rogue (Think was called a thief in NWN) etc. and focus on specific skills you are good at.

Fortunately, the game industry evolved to a point where there is pretty much anything for everyone with various game play styles. Here in PCG I got introduced to Pathfinder which is pretty much a combination of various games all in one (I had a list of it somewhere on the forum of games I was able to delete because I had it inside Pathfinder. Great story, great game and personally do not know how to categorise the game. It has everything from Sims to Risk in it with a dash of Diablo and a some more odd's n ends.

Nothing wrong with the games you are playing. If I am not mistaken there is actually a whole thread dedicated to the old games. One of the guys (or moderators) might be able to add a link for you to it, but I am pretty sure I have seen a thread like that somewhere on the forum.

Manuals/built in tutorials, all the same to me. You play a game for a while, and when you come back to it (possibly years later) you may or may not have forgotten exactly what to do. Whereas Left/Right/Fire and maybe two or three other control arcade games are simple to pick up and get on with again. The one exception I make is M & B Warband, which I've played so much I hardly have to think about what I'm doing. I regard that as an exceptional game, though. I'm not explaining that very well, but I know what I mean anyway!

Those cutscenes are sometimes unskippable (the worst), and they probably bloat the download/install size. Basically, I don't need an elaborate story to enjoy a game. eg Robotron 2084 - Destroy the robots, save the humans (the last bit is optional!). That'll do.

When I mentioned casual/puzzle/board games I meant the likes of jigsaws in Tabletop Simulator, CrossCraze (Scrabble), Paint it Back/Pepper's Puzzles (nonogram logic puzzles), and suchlike. Time killing brain games. Stick some favourite music on and relax.

I still have a few board games laying around but all my kids are grown up and the wife is not into games of any sort. Only games she knows is spend money, make me suffer and tik tok. Somewhere in her busy schedule of doing that she still manages to rev my limiter on daily basis and tell me what I am allowed and not allowed to do........

I hand out the board games to the grand kids every time they visit me. My oldest grandson is past the board game stage and now on a laptop and the youngest well to him anything he can pick up .... well, must be edible. LMAO. No board games for him ........ yet.

All the games I mentioned in my previous post are on Steam. Particularly like jigsaws in Tabletop Sim. Take any image, cut it into 180 or 320 pieces, excellent controls, customise the layout if you want. Used to host, and people would join in, but I just stick to single player now. It's my second most played Steam title. Tabletop Sim. can used to for any board game anyone cares to create for it, but I've only ever used it for jigsaws.

Hiya, just joined. Mainly an XBOX fan boy coz of COD, but also have a high end Gaming PC and Gaming Laptop and just got the XBOX Ally X handheld. Play football manager ALOT ha ha.

Also got a nice Spectrum emulator and play alot of the old retro games, Gauntlet being one of my old fave classics.

Other games I play fair bit - Civilisation, Destiny 2, GuildWars and GuildWars 2, GTA.

Greetings. I am an old timer gamer. I used to play a lot back in the day. I truly enjoyed the basic first person shooters that were both desktop and multi-player. I used to play in clans with great people.

Recently, I have unpacked from my garage, some of the games I started with: Descent 3, Medal of Honor, Battlefield, etc.

Now that I am divorced and my kids are off to college, I thought it would be fun to play the games once again.

I tried to hook them up with my laptop, but unfortunately, lots of issues. They seem to install, but can no be launched.

My system, is newer, but not that new:
Device name LAPTOP-K35KTRRG
Processor 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz (2.80 GHz)
Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Is there a forum here that I can post for help in getting these either playing with my system, or possibly a second operating system, or peer box?

I would need help in how to set any of these up.

Games are one of that rare and weird constants that fuel and shape my life.
Generally I like deep strategy games sometimes disrupted by urge to play shooters, explorers and other weirder genres. Too many to count and they are still coming 🙂

In RL I am indie game dev from Slovenia, stupid enough to try making games on my own. Working on a modern warfare turn based tactical game that I will introduce soon in a Studio Spotlight.

Hello everyone,

I would play games that are fall within the action military genre or horror genre, though my interests typically involve the horror genre ever since I was a young kid. However, during these times I have taken in an interest in development. One of the projects I am currently working on involves a custom experience or game mode from Battlefield 6 portal.

On spare time I have been able to develop my own custom conquest mode that offers very large maps, more vehicles, and more tactical style gameplay. It is definitely slower paced. For instance, in the Siege of Cairo map, I have added verticality by incorporating a black Hawk Helicopter into the mix for both sides. The other 4 maps in my game mode have been greatly expanded in terms of playable area space. As a matter of fact, this game mode will be debuting on 1-6-25. It seems to run really well at the moment with 40 players. Those 39 others players are AI. I will be stress testing using using higher numbers such as 40 -50 players. If anyone is interested, you can find my video on YouTube called Battlefield 6: Insurgency Ironstorm, which was inspired by the game insurgency Sandstorm.

Another project I am working on involves Unreal 5.6.1. I am developing a dynamic random light system, random door opening system, a complex door interaction system, and terrain material system.
