Need help picking a gaming laptop – what should I actually focus on?

Hey everyone, I’m planning to buy my first gaming laptop but I’m honestly a bit lost with all the specs and options out there. I’ve looked at a few models but I keep getting confused about what actually matters most for smooth gaming performance.

For someone who mainly wants to play modern games without constant lag or overheating issues, what specs should I really be paying attention to? Would appreciate any advice from people who’ve already been through this 👍

There's a saying, cut your cloth according to your needs, generically asking the community what you should look for in a laptop is very vague. This is why we ask for more details, to provide a tailored response.

show us what you have looked at so we have a starting point.

Shame most of the laptops only have 8gb vram on them. You have to get a system with a 5070 TI or higher in it to get more. For instance

8gb vram is really below the minimum I would accept. 12 or 16 are better provided games don't keep wanting more. There are already games that struggle on 8gb

16gb of ram would also be the minimum I would get - most of the ones on 2nd row of the link above have 32gb which is better still.

I don't know a lot about laptops but I am sure someone will think of something.

Jebus, I don't know what that Lenovo page has been drinking. Here's a Lenovo laptop with a 5070 ti on Amazon for $2000 appx. And the 12 GB in that one is just fine. You won't need more any time soon.

If you are wanting to have something truly mobile, for like gaming on a train or something, you have to remember that you'll need to be plugged in to play a game. A good alternative would be the Steam Deck, which is tons cheaper, plays just about everything and, obviously, it will play games on the battery and the battery will last much longer than a laptop battery would. Laptop's claim their batteries last for hours, but if you dig deep into the power settings and adjust them so that the laptop can actually play on the battery, the battery will die in about 30 minutes or even less. I believe that you can also hook up keyboard and mouse and monitor to a Deck when you are home.
