Seeing that this turned out to be my daily "go to" forum and thread for pretty much anything. I got some very interesting news a few minutes ago.
The school where my students are at (Local school not far from me) called me earlier (Few minutes ago) and I was informed that the school will be cutting my funding. This was however not the sad part. I listened to the new headmaster telling me all the reasons as to why and I pretty much just agreed to whatever she had to say. (Sad that the arts & culture funding gets cut but a new stadium (Sports) is being built, but that was a different part of my conversation (Argument) with her)
I had to correct her on several things, however:
1. For the past 7 to 8 years I have been helping the kids after school (extramural activity) out of my own pocket. The only time I receive money from the school is when Tracks, scoresheets etc is purchased for a school play or a band or a show and that is at minimum rate just to cover costs incurred on my side (Paper, ink, travel). Anything other than that including taking the kids to concerts is sponsored by myself (I put the fuel in the school bus out of my pocket and pay for their tickets) and every once in a while, I will have a parent or parents (and artists) that appreciates what I am doing and donates some funds or sponsor a specific event I am planning. So, if that is the funding she is referring to, she will have to take it up with the respective parents/artists.
2. I do not teach the school curriculum but do follow it (Hence get each year's curriculum in advance like the other music teachers at the school, which I personally BUY from them at the beginning of every year). If the students learned a specific thing in class recently, I apply that to a different genre keeping them interested in music. E.g. Showing a notation technique used by Mozart (School Classes) and then again used by say someone like Kelly Clarkson (My Classes), pretty much just remove the "boring" out of the studies and motivates them to keep going.
3. Assistance in any play or band at the school is out of own free will and no one pays me to stand there to tell the kids to maybe consider a different octave or mix the sound a bit differently. In addition, if an artist performs at the school and it is one of my clients I negotiate a better rate for the school since artists do not perform for free.
4. If it is indicated anywhere that I am receiving some form of compensation for any of this, I would like to know where the money went because it surely did not reach me since everything mentioned was privately funded.
She was un-aware of the situation, and my funding application is now under review ...................................(HUH?)
So, by the sound of things what was originally a "cut your funding" phone call now sounds like a "you might now be funded" call.
LMAO this is going to be an interesting thing to watch unfold. Clearly shows the left-hand does not know what the right-hand is doing.
I will however refuse funding if approved. Not why I am doing it. Managed to keep the "boat afloat" for so many years and met awesome young and upcoming artists through the years (Many of which are still my clients and (here and there) they sponsor some of the kids directly)
................Why change the way the wheel is turning?
