Hytale Discussion and Info

Some executive at Riot Games is living a nightmare right now. They paid for development for 6 years and finally canceled Hytale and sold the studio back to the founders. I'd imagine it was bargain priced. A few months later and Hytale has launched into early access, and according to PC Gamer's estimate, had over 1 million concurrent players.

Anyway, I bought this yesterday, and my initial thought is that vanilla Hytale will be better, once completed, than vanilla Minecraft. Mods will be the final determinate, though. Unlike Minecraft, Hytale is supporting mods from the beginning.

Adventure mode is not in the game yet, so I'm playing Sandbox. Creative is also available. There were a nice selection of enemies in the starting area, but enemy AI needs to be improved. I used a bow on an orc (at least I think it was an orc) that apparently decided I was out of his range, and killed two deer who were stuck on geometry.

Crafting is different from Minecraft. You don't arrange materials. As long as you have the materials in your inventory, you just press "craft". There are quite a few different crafting tables, and each one can be leveled to unlock new recipes.

Building and decorating is much better in Hytale. There are a lot of things other than just blocks that you can craft.

Basic combat is like the original Minecraft combat, but there is more available, like special moves and ultimates.

Like the article says, it seems much more like a classic Survival-Crafting game akin to Valheim than Minecraft, which has almost no progression to speak of. I understand why they're (going to be) compared, but I feel like it'll be just like Terraria, which used to be called 2D Minecraft but is really its own thing altogether.

As you said, the comparison is going to be there, but this is going to be a larger, deeper vanilla game. In the end, it will be about the mods, and so far it is looking good on that front. Game released two days ago and and there are 571 mods on CurseForge (I haven't used the site in ages. I'm assuming that's what they are calling "projects".)

That's absolutely insane for a game that was released in Early Access two days ago, with whole chunks of the game still missing.

Did a lot of fighting in what felt like an endless underground maze. It was just a cave, but it branched off all over the place. As I walked through, I came upon an area with spider webs and large pulsating cocoons. Naturally, I got rid of those, but only for awhile because it kept going and going. So of course they had hatched into large, angry spiders on my way back. The spiders would have been no problem at all except that they spit poison at you. I managed to get rid of them.

I have a simple system for finding my way back in caves, but that system was nearly destroyed by the complexity of the cave. But I had the entrance to the stairs back up lit up like 10 Christmas trees, so it didn't really take me that long.

All-in-all, I had a lot of fun.

I remember in Minecraft, I used some torches and put them on the cave walls. It worked pretty well as long as I didn't forget it when I got excited mining diamond nodes.

Hytale seems like fun, though it also seems too early into development for me. After all those years at Riot, they had to rewrite and reprogram almost the entirety of the game, but on the other hand development seems to be moving along a lot faster because of that. They know what they want to do, have had a few years of "practice" making the game, now they are in full-on development mode. I love to see that happen. I'll keep a close eye on it, it looks like it's going to be something special.

If you like sandboxes, it's already decent.

The key to that system is to always put them on the same side based on the direction you are headed. For instance, I always put torches to my left. That way, if on the way back I make sure the torches are on my right, I know I'm headed home.

It works until you are in a Hansel and Gretel universe:D
You know, a fantastic monster for Minecraft or Hytale would be "The Torch Eater" who lives in caves since I'm sure just about everyone uses torches for navigation. You could really screw people up. Of course, you'd probably just take some other distinctive block with you. But that has the added evil of making monsters spawn in areas you thought were well lit, so that's good.

No, he's the "Fire Breathing Chameleon". He's not aggressive. He's hard to spot because--you know. Kill him before he eats any torches, and he's a piece of cake, but if he's eaten 10 (or whatever) torches, he becomes a mini-fire dragon.
