Finished the first area. It was alright. I'm just not a shooter person. Game looks great. Wasn't too thrilled with the second gun you get, the full auto. Didn't feel great to use for me. It felt bland, like just holding down the left click as opposed to holding down the trigger of a powerful gun. Machine Games does this type of weapon better. The first gun, which I guess is some sort of shotgun, felt great, though.
I got the impression from the hands on preview that this was going to really emphasize melee, but the first section wasn't like that at all. Maybe it was a little bit more than the traditional Doom, but I played Doom 2016 a bit, and it didn't seem much different. You can punch enemies to set yourself up for a kill, but you only get three punches without getting restocked on whatever that is that allows you to punch, so you can't just run around punching everyone. Which reminds me, the shield dash/bash is pretty fun, as is the attempt to basically parry projectiles and send them back to the person who shot them.
All in all, I'd say that if I were more of a shooter guy that I would be pretty pleased with it.
