December 2024 General Game Discussion Thread

No AI generated image? Am disappoint.

Lately, I've been spending more time on gaming related projects than actual gaming. Upgrading my Steam Deck, transferring saves from one handheld to another, etc. Nothing has really commanded my attention, but that may also be just because I've been non-stop busy for the past few weeks.

Though I guess that's a slight lie, as I've fit in around 6 hours or so of Transport Fever 2 in the last week or so. Figured out some ways to be more efficient in that, so that's pretty cool.

Also played about an hour of UBOAT last night and got though 3 tutorial missions. It definitely seems interesting and I want to keep hacking away at it, but it also seems like a lot, so we'll see how far I actually go with it.

Sorry, I just realized it was December. This is what can happen to you when you don't have a job.
I realised 2 days ago when I had my Birthday. Its the 3rd here, I can't help being in the future. Its a good thing I don't make these threads or they all start 16 hours too soon for some of you

really, you should have more time than others to look and notice date since you have so much to do :)

3 months since i played a game. Maybe I will over Xmas/NY break.

I keep busy with my projects that I'll never finish.

@BeardyHat :) I tried several times just now to make a picture and it keeps timing out. Not sure what's wrong. I probably need to reboot or switch to my other PC.

Time to build a new one, methinks :p

Here's some ones I just did with Copilot. I don't mess with it too often, so I'm not great at prompts, but the second one was "Command and Conquer Red Alert Christmas". I strongly associate C&C:RA with Christmas, as I received it on Christmas day back in 1996.

Still not entirely sure how to embed directly into the forum, so Imgur it is.

I did also just buy Elite: Dangerous on Steam. I've owned it since release (2016?), as well as the first expansion, Horizon since its release (2017? No idea), but my friends started playing again and in order to have all the "content" (still hate this word) I'd need the Odyssey expansion.

The Deluxe edition with everything was on Steam for $10, so I went that route. It'll give me a little extra convenience as well, I guess, since it'll make it easier to install my Deck. I had installed the Frontier installer on there yesterday, but I guess now I'll need to delete it...

i made those a while ago as we had questions how it worked ourselves :)
might help... also, you used the media option for imgur, better choices:

Some after sleeping on it for a while i decided to pull the trigger and get Psychonauts 2 and mad max the game. The latter everyone classes as a sleeper hit whilst the reviews felt the game was a snooze fest (despite the combat mechanics). Only time will tell.

POE2 beta is almost upon us and my progress in POE1 has got me thinking about splashing some MTX for stash tabs. Specifically the currency and Map tabs (the 2 things that is eating up my space). A thought occured as to whether these 2 specific tabs actually will be in POE2. We have no idea of the crafting and mapping side of things and whether it would be identical (it won't) and whether this will help. We shall see...

Speaking of POE the Explosive arrow champion has so far been reasonably solid. I can do most of the content (within reason) but i'm seriously hampered by gear constraints and no one is selling any reasonable gear for me to take it to the next level.

Did you ever play it? I'm thinking about giving it a try. I got it to play with my son, and we never got around to it.

That's a good picture, by the way. I made one of a similar sort, but haven't uploaded it yet.

Quite but of it, in fact!

I couldn't tell you exactly how much of it I played, but enough that I wrote the guide to mining back in the day.

Ultimately, I quit because it felt kind of shallow at that time. Mostly just grinding for more credits so that you could get a better ship to grind for more credits and there were really only 3 ways to actually do that.

I'm hopeful in the 7ish years I've been away that things have changed a bit, as I did enjoy the sense of place the game had. Although my life was very different back then, so I don't know if I'll be able to get into it as I once did.

Generating the AI pictures is pretty fun and I'm actually kind of happy I can do that right in my OS. Previously I generated some ridiculous ones of Space Marines I'll have to upload when I can take the time to read the media guide.

mad max the game.

Great game, driving combat can get repetitive but i love mad max and the whole universe so it was always fun to me.

POE2 beta is almost upon us

I am excited for this too! Diablo 4 has grown stale and very repetitive. I also COMPLETELY forgot that its couch co-op (splitscreen) so the wife and i will be doing that this weekend.

I wasnt a big POE player and i thought it looked dated for the time i started getting interested, i ventured out some but didnt get far at all, so itll be nice to start with POE 2 from the beginning.

Probably going to start off with the mercenary because i want to walk around and shoot things, then either a monk or electric sorc.

With POE 2 coming out my rotation is going to be POE 2, Stalker 2 and Helldivers 2. Destiny 2...is done. I havent played that in a good month, month-in-a-half which is coming up on the biggest break ive had from it (behind the terrible 2-3 seasons that came between the last 2 expansions). There has been 0 content to bring me back.

I’m putting down Stalker 2 for now until there are some more patches that improve performance. My PC isn’t the best but it should be able to play the game better than it currently is.

I’ve been searching around for a new game to play. I want something simple and easy, but intriguing enough to want me to keep playing. I’ve been wanting to find games with a predominately winter setting, but most I’ve found I don’t want to play. The Long Dark seems great, but not sure if I’m in the mood to play a survival game. Project Zomboid seems to be very fun but I’m not sure if I could pass the learning curve before getting bored. There are a few city builders/management games on sale that are in snowy landscapes, but nothing is really popping out to me. I could just boot up RDR2 again and stay in the northwest corner of the map, living off the land and surviving off of hunting for deer. That would be fun for all of 1-2 hours before I need a real objective to work towards. Maybe I should look into survival/camping mods for RDR2.

This is coming soon, but has a free demo you can try

Just some that I've played that come to mind.

Okay, looked at Nexus Mods for RDR2, I’m already seeing lots of mods I’d love to check out. I want to mod the game to be more “immersive” and interactive. There’s a fairly typical survival mods that add hunger, thirst, encumbrance, urination, and sleep levels to the game. They can be tweaked, so it would be fun to use this mod and tweak the meters to deplete much more slowly. There are lots of other mods I want to use like purchasable properties with customization options akin to Skyrim, a mod that lets you sit in any chair, a mod that changes the seasons of the entire map, a mod that lets you have small jobs for legal money (similar to camp chores in vanilla game), and so much more.

It seems like I could mod RDR2 into becoming the best cozy game for me. I like games where you feel apart of the living world. It definitely captures that with the vanilla game, but some extra mods can it better. I think this is definitely what I’m going to be up to tonight.

If you get bored with that, check out theHunter, Call of the Wild and add the Alaska map or one of the other cold weather maps. Buy one of the cheap dog DLCs. And you can wander through the beautiful world hunting stuff, camping, etc. There's no thirst or hunger, though, although there may be be a mod or two for that.

All the DLC are cheap right now. You may already have this on Epic if you've been getting the free games.

Also, I saw someone recommending Namalsk, which is a mod, I think, for DayZ, which is a game I know you already have.

i believe the majority of people are choosing the mercenary for the control mechanics etc (it was so good it got implemented to the other classes).

Not sure what its going to be like though, i heard that the early game for the merc is pretty rough, but who knows. Me? i'm not going early access, let others play and test it. Unlike other EA games, this is practically a full game, so ooddles of content. will need to test it to see what performance is like on my aging rig.

POE1 early game isn't all that compelling admittedly, i only get in the rhythm around act 3, but that said they've improved the early game a fair bit given you options to buy skill gems in act one (be it the really basic ones). But even so, its fairly rough and i try to blitz through the main game as fast as possible. End game is where the best content is around.

Played some Slime Rancher today. I guess you would consider it a sandbox since it doesn't tell you what to do. I've just been changing regular slimes into giant slimes. Like the tabby slimes are now giant rock slimes, and the regular slimes are now giant tabby slimes.

Not sure if there is a storyline or not. I'll just keep doing things until I get bored. I think I have all the slime types from the area I can get to, so I guess my next move is to expand into a new area.

This is 100% accurate. If I had my case on my desk like that in front of the mouse & keyboard, I'd stare at it all day and get nothing done... as opposed to staring at web forums all day and...

still getting nothing done.

Dog garned Steam sales. I just added a dozen more titles to the million or so already in my library. But this time, at least, they're mostly AAA titles I've been wanting to play, and a few that I had on other platforms that I would rather re-play on PC (thank you, Sony). I'm looking forward to another Last of Us playthrough (with a rebuilt game) and finally a 2nd playthrough of Horizon: Forbidden West. And a few other notables, I also grabbed RDR2, Uncharated: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

After 80 hours, I finished Baldur's Gate 3

's first act. But I want to pop back and see the Githyanki (sp!?) camp real quick. There's no way they'll really help us, but I'll hear no end of it if we don't try.

In other news, X4: Foundations has a free update to version 7.5 going into beta testing (now this is what I call patch notes!) that's getting me excited. Also, Distant Worlds 2 is releasing an update on the 5th.

I just picked up Sapiens, even though it's only 15 percent off. I wouldn't mind replaying Last of Us, this time with keyboard and mouse, and I've never played either of those Uncharted games. Or maybe I played the 4th one. Not sure. But I think I'm finished this sale. I've already bought a ton of games. I don't even know what I've bought unless I go to the Help section and check my purchases haha
