We can do that!

Hey Zed, I bought a bottle of ketchup but, no matter how hard I squeezed, I couldn't get it to come out of the bottle! I threw it away and bought another bottle, but it did the same thing! What's going on!?
One time when I went to visit them, the first thing they said when I walked through the door was, "Dad, the downstairs toilet isn't working."

I fixed it but told them to call the owner instead of waiting for me to come visit.

Finally finished, as of yesterday, with about 6-days to spare. I still have some minor things to do (such as magnetizing them for transport and finally cleaning and organizing my office, which I've now been ignore for over 2 months now due to this project. It's a damn mess and I cannot wait to straighten it up.), but otherwise I am ready for a 2-day, 12-hours a day (ugh) tournament this coming weekend.

Looking forward to not having to worry about getting this done anymore and being able to focus and play some games again.

I'm thinking about buying a Panic Playdate, mostly because Lucas Pope (Obra Dinn, Papers Please) has released a new game for it.

It, to me, is extraordinarily expensive, given I'd want a cover for it, so with shipping that would be $250, basically. I'm half tempted to sell some Gameboy's I've modified, but don't use anymore, as well as an original Gameboy Advance SP, which can fetch some decent money.

I've got handhelds coming out of my butt, basically and yet I want another one. Prior to thinking about this, I was considering something new from Anbernic as they're having a big sale soon, but the stuff I'm interested in doesn't really offer me anything super substantial over what I already have.

I may just pick-up my 3DS again and play something new on there and hope this feeling goes away.

My wife was cleaning a closet a couple of weeks ago, came across a 3DS and spent the evening playing something or other. I think it was a racing game. She hadn't played any type of console since the Nintendo 64. She does play some things on her phone every now and then, though, mostly match 3 or word games.

Pretty much what my wife does; has little time waster games (not to say that what we play aren't similar) on her phone that she messes around with.

Honestly, I should set her up with one of my Gameboy's and Tetris, but I think the barrier to entry is a little higher there since she needs to carry the extra device, change batteries, etc.

You could put an emulator on her phone, though in my experience a touch screen is a poor replacement for actual buttons.

I was planning on using the wireless controller I want to get for my birthday for playing emulated games on my phone, but my job just today send an email telling us they're planning on restricting the apps we can put on our work phones and I don't have a personal smartphone at the moment.

I'm considering just getting a Steam Deck to play games on the go, but that's quite a bit more expensive than a cheap smartphone. The union in my work field is trying to get a 13% raise in salaries though, so if they manage to get that through I think I should be able to save up for one. It would be really nice to be able to play games with my wife again that don't support split screen.

Good luck on your raise. The only time I ever got a raise that good was if I got a promotion or changed companies. But I was never a union member, either.

I'm not a union member either, but I will become one if they manage to get that raise through. Especially if they manage to add the automatic inflation adjustment they're pushing for.

@Pifanjr Happy you day!

Thanks! I was made aware of a US tradition to eat pizza on Pi day, so I decided to do a bit of cultural appreciation. Turns out eating an entire XL double pepperoni pizza in one sitting causes gastrointestinal distress the next day, who knew?

I keep posting about my PC woes in the monthly gaming thread, so I’m moving it here.

After playing AC Valhalla for a good 20-30 minutes tonight, I check Afterburner and my GPU is hitting 80-82c constantly. Uh oh.

My idiot self flipped the top fan backwards last night when I had it right side up the first time, and come to find out the fan in front of the case has been backwards for probably 2-3 years. Ouch. To recap I had it right side up after I swapped CPUs, but then thought it was wrong so I flipped it again, now come to tonight when I realize it actually is wrong. That means for the 2-3 hours I played last night I was nearing GPU-melting temps. I guess that’s what those arrows on the sides mean… duhhh

I promptly flipped both fans, triple checked to make sure my CPU and back fan are correct, then I decided to just go for repasting my GPU. It was pretty cruddy, the thermal paste was totally dried up and spilt off the sides, there was next to zero thermal paste on the silver chip. It is 5 years old after all. I cleaned it as best as I could with some paper towels and a tiny amount of isopropyl, let it air dry then blew it with canned air. After that I put a dollop of paste on, spread it out evenly across the whole silver chip, then assembled the card again. I used Arctic MX-4 for this and the CPU btw.

Now after another hour of playing Valhalla, my GPU temp is cruising around 65c, CPU around 55-60c, and the game is staying at a constant 60fps with no micro-stuttering on nearly full Ultra (world detail and shadows from Ultra down to Very High saved nearly 1gb of VRAM usage at no noticeable visual degradation). I am so happy to finally make a big upgrade to my PC and glad to finally get the cooling right. Now I should have no more issues with the computer… I hope.

Honestly, 80c is completely normal for a GPU under load, so no need to sweat that. That said, nice to have brought down the temps anyway, which will hopefully help your ambient temps wherever your PC is.

This weekend is what I've been building towards since January 6th, the two day, 80 person Warhammer: Age of Sigmar tournament. It'll be two days of 12 hours on my feet, which is sure to be exhausting, but I'm sure I'll have fun.

Really glad now that I turned my attitude around and am fully ready and excited for this tournament. Prior to my building and painting a new army, I was feeling pretty burned out on the game and the competitive bent it has, but I decided to lean into the other direction and, while still being fairly competitive, built my army to play how I wanted it to, rather than towards some ideal of the Meta, which can be easy to get sucked into. Anyway, I doubt I'll be amazing, but I hope I play well, win or lose. Last year, I placed 11th out of 54, which I felt was pretty solid, though I'm sure there will be much stiffer competition this year with an extra 26 people.

At any rate, I'm excited for the weekend, but also excited for it to be over. I've been so focused on this one game, I haven't been able to do much of anything else, so it'll be nice to be able to feel like I can do other things other than study and paint for this tournament.

Is nowhere safe? Is there no sacred place of refuge left on these Diablo 4ums?

make a big upgrade to my PC

You're doing it wrong. 180° wrong. But you're young, so that's understandable.

What you do is downgrade the games. So simple when it's pointed out, isn't it?
Then you can lead a philosophical and carefree life, uncluttered by hardware envy. Perhaps invest all those saved dollars in a Trader Joe's tote bag or ten…

I suppose if I made all my games look like potatoes then I would have nothing to complain about and would have no need to spend money on upgrades. Darn it!

I have my MSI Afterburner max temp set to 83, but I’m not sure what the manufacture max temp is, so when I saw it hit 82c I freaked out. The fans absolutely needed to be corrected, repasting the GPU was extra work but I’m glad I did it after I saw how dried up the original paste was. I got my RTX 2060 in early 2019, so 5 years later it was due for a repaste.

Sorry, have to put on my well actually hat, hopefully you can forgive me or correct my correction, its always welcome. 200W of heat is 200W of heat. Doesnt matter if the core temp is 30c or 80c thats only relevant to how good the cooling is at dissipating the heat. Better cooling might actually make the room warmer.

Nvidia usually sets the core temp limit around 80C and the last few gens of card will throttle to stay there and avoid further damage, so you might be leaving a bit of performance on the table bouncing off the limit. I also dont think they used to put a hot spot sensor pre 3000 series, so the actual hottest point of the core will be significantly over the core temp displayed in GPUz or whatever, if its a bad cooler mount it could be 25-30C more than the edge temp, Ive seen it on one of my own in the past.

Decided to see what's on sale over at EGS...

What you need to cool the room is my custom cooler using HRSI tiles surrounded by an aluminum alloy shell. This will redirect 90 percent of the CPUs heat back onto the CPU causing it to melt and quit functioning, thus stopping it from producing heat.

I make these systems myself, but you can only buy one if you are a TikTok content creator. Sorry all.

Chubby boy logic/wife manipulation:

Wife: "I'm going to get cupcakes for the April wedding shower at the new bakery on Clinton Hwy."

Me: "How do you know they are any good? Better go get some so we can test them out."

Yep, they were good.

Wouldnt be enough to make the room noticeably warmer. Given lower temps the GPU BIOS might allow extra voltage or clockspeed (current) until it hits one of the other limiters. P=VI its not exactly rocket science ;)

No idea what you are talking about. I made a joke about keeping the room cool by breaking the CPU. Apparently my wording was poor.

APRIL? That's weeks away! Bakeries do a good job of smoothing things out but, in reality, seasons are still a thing. They may have to get several ingredients from entirely different nations by the time we get to April! You're going to have to check again really be sure.

Thanks, it went well, I'd say. Given that I'm a pretty casual player with a very poor memory, I did alright, going 3:3 all told. Made some tactical errors in my early games that may have turned them around if I were smarter, but there we go.

Was damn long, 8am-8pm Saturday and Sunday and I'm just damned wiped. Not sure I'll be going to another Warhammer tournament for awhile, as, while it wasn't a bad experience, 6-games is too many. And playing all that Warhammer: Age of Sigmar, showed me that I'm still pretty burned out on the game right now. Certainly got excited and was ready to go to this tournament, but I'd rather be playing something different with fewer rules, at the moment, which means the army I just cranked on for 3 months will sit on the shelf for an extended period of time...

Guess I should mention, I did beat my white whale; a guy who thoroughly crushed me in my first ever tournament game last year. Very nice guy, actually and his entire team are pretty cool people.

Sorry, have to put on my well actually hat

I've had a lot of that this weekend.

That makes sense to me.

The Perplexing Problem of SAMP

GREAT news. I asked CoPilot how I could stop being a moron, and it gave me some good and actionable advice. Unfortunately, I suspect I'm too moronic to actually benefit from the suggestions, so I've come up with a new plan that simply accepts the fact that I'm a moron while attempting to mitigate the effects of my moronic nature by shutting the f**k up and therefore hiding the fact that I'm a moron rather than spreading my moron around like dandelion seeds in the wind.

For example, in the years before everyone hated everyone else, you often heard people say "there are no wrong opinions," I'm too stupid to know if that is correct or not, but I've discovered from reading my negative Steam reviews that when you base your opinions on incorrect facts, or just general moronic thoughts, that the subsequent and corresponding opinions are less than perfect. I have accumulated ocean filling quantities of these imperfect opinions because I am a SMOID (Slightly Mobile Organic Ignorance Database). Therefore, under my new plan, I will stop leaving negative reviews.

Surely, you say, in your condition you shouldn't be leaving reviews at all, whether good or bad. This is probably true. How would a moron know for sure? I will take your advice into consideration. I must assume that if I'm deciding to do one thing that I should certainly do another thing instead, as everything a moron thinks is suspect, so you are probably correct.

But this brings us to the most puzzling difficulty of all this, something I refer to as the SAMP (Self-Aware Moron's Paradox). If I'm the one true moron spoken of in the prophecies, the moronborn (sorry Mom and Dad), then how do I know that any of this is right?
