Tips? I'm having trouble playing Retro CD Rom Games

ExoDos itself is probably no more then 5-6gb. Its the games that make up the rest of it. Without the games, Exodos does nothing. There are close to 8000 games potentially to download. my advise is go lite and then download the ones you want. i'm willing to bet a large chunk of those games are crap, already on GOG, duplicates or imitations of other games.

The laptop listed on ebay is probably fine for DOS games. its not like it will need a graphics card to actually make it work. its emulating the hardware to making the DOS games from 30 years ago to work.

Sorry for the late reply, I started working on a reply to your last post but forgot to hit send. However, this second laptop you posted is going to be so much better than the first. Only issue is that it is Used, so keep that in mind. There is cosmetic damage, but the seller says it has been tested to run properly. My recommendation if you get a used laptop is to do a complete wipe and reinstall of Windows (Microsoft.com link).

The specs listed in the laptop are great for your use-case. Fast SSD storage, more than enough RAM to run any older game you want, good CPU and decent integrated graphics that will get the job done. It will blow your old Chromebook out of the water.

Referring to your earlier question about modern GOG games, with this laptop you may not be able to play anything very recent. This benchmark video shows the reviewer playing PUBG at Very Low settings, 720p resolution at around 30FPS. Anything released before ~2012 or so should run just fine on higher settings at 1080p, but your mileage may vary.

Thanks. I just purchased the laptop, second one that is used. I'm really hoping this works for ExoDOS. It appears to be the same laptop a youtube Metal Jesus uses for GOG back in 2019. But I'm hoping this is what will make eXoDOS work. I'll have to read more into the wipe and reinstall of Windows. Hope that is not too complicated.

I'm excited about eXoDOS now. I love my disks, but now I am getting a haven of games. The disks can be complicated. This is going to be a big step!

To reset a pc its fairly simple. Once logged in Just go into settings, search for Reset PC and decide how far you want to wipe. you can do absolutely everything and reset it back to out of box experience if you want. it will mean running driver/windows updates but its the most painless way to do it.

Of course it really depends how the machine was set up when you got it but perhaps confirm with seller to do a full reset or something.

Alright! My computer has come. I did a full reset. Now I'm trying to open up the ExoDOS. I downloaded and it was seeding, but I'm having a lot of trouble. I downloaded DosBOX as I read you're supposed to get that too. Then I got exoDOS lite. But it only had one game in the files. So I have no idea where to go. It also gave me the PDFs.

To everyone whos interested, here is how i set up Exowin3x.

1. Download torret file from https://www.retro-exo.com/win3x.html

2. Fire up your fav torrent downloader (i recommend WinSCP for security reasons see https://www.privacytools.io/open-source-torrent-clients ) to download the files. The entire content is 300GB but if you go Exowin3x > Exo > eXowin3x folder you can select and deselect the files you want to download. in the example below I've deselected everything but 3 of the files:

B5hNt8H.jpg

TIP: if you want to download some more at a later date, just repeat step 2 selecting only the new games you want to add.

3. once the files have been downloaded, open up the Exowin3x folder and run the setup.bat file. follow the steps to set up the folders and files. NOTE you may need to download some .net framework files, for it to work so install those files if needed.

4. once its all done, in the Exowin3x folder run the launchbox.exe and star up the program. Search for your game and dbl click on it.

5. Dblclick on the game and a cmd prompt will appear and ask if you want to install the game. Press y to proceed. it will ask if you want to set all aspect, whether to be in full screen or windowed, graphic filter. Decide the settings and once done the box will disappear.

6. Dblclick on the game again and it should just start up this time as opposed to asking to install. In this case i'm running The awesome adventures of Victor Vector & yondo: the cyberplasm forumula:

FepdB70.jpg

Thats it. its quick, simple and painless. Hopefully.

I’m not sure of if you saw my latest post but I got a dell laptop and will try these steps. But lunchbox stopped working for me when my buddy helped me earlier. It worked and then stopped. When I would double click, nothing happened.

I wanna thank you so much for helping me to get the Vampire games on ExoWin3. I beat the first one and that's something I never got to do as a kid. It's been a pleasure playing these games.

Now that I see the potential, I've been trying to download other games by following your advice. It seems straight forward but my friend and I had no luck. For some reason, all the Victor Vector games work! But when we try the same for other games, there's all kinds of problems.

My friend suggested to get more memory and download the whole thing, because he thinks it's being funny when we try to just get a few games. I use the torrent, Transmissions. And I would go into the folders just like you did. Unselect everything but a few games. Even when it seemed like it was finished (although connecting to torrents is tricky and inconsistent) when we went to the Exo3 and hit install, and the games would just take us right out. So something wasn't done correctly.

For some reason, I never saw the .setup.bat files you mentioned.

But I am very very happy to have the Victor Vector games. It's just that now I think a lot of the games look interesting. Do you think it's more straight foward if I just get more memory and download it all?

I wanna thank you for recommending me a new laptop and ExoDOS is working really well. It's amazing. Now I'm also trying to see if Exo3 or Apple2GS will work. But everything has come so far!

I can have a go at downloading one of the games you were having problems and see what happens. Which one did you were having problems? i'll see what happens when i try problematic ones on my exodos3.1

i think i wasn't quite clear when it came to adding additional games post install, but try one at downloading and getting one game at a time and see whether its any better.

Any problems in ExoDOS lite? Not tried the other EXO projects so no idea what they're like.

I tried 3D Dino Adventire, 3d pinball, 301 Atlas and a Batman game.

Right now no problems in Exodos Lite! It’s working quite well.

Ok i tried 3D Dino Adventire and batman partners in peril (3d pinball is already installed on my machine and i couldn't find 301 atlas).

They both downloaded, installed and played properly No problems on my machine.

Like i said previously, my instructions on add additional games after installing Exowin3.1 wasn't all that clear. So to clarify, let me explain what i did:

1. open up torrent file and when it asks what you want to download. Deselect everything, navigate down to eXoWIn3x/eXo/ExoWin3x and tick the games you want. press ok to proceed.

2. Wait for files to finish downloading. They should be zip files.

3. Fire up launchbox and double click on the game (or press the play button on the side) and the familiar Command prompt window pops up asking you if you wish to install. Say yes and go through your preferences during install.

4. Double click on game again and it should just boot up.

i suppose the next question to ask is whether the files you're looking for are actually downloaded. if you navigate to eXoWIn3x/eXo/ExoWin3x are the zip files there? Note in image the zip files and folders when ExoWin3.1 unpacks/installs them.

I believe I am doing what is listed here. But when I try to open it up through torrent and open up the selected games, it just says duplicate torrent. ExoWin3x copy of (file number)

have you moved Exowin3.1 to a different location to where you downloaded it originally?

You may want to navigate and check the download location to see what's there. Delete the duplicates and older zip versions so there's only one version.

try another random game you haven't downloaded before and see if that one works. Might help to see the screenshots of the error or what you are doing.

EDIT: looking at the message now, i'm wondering whether the torrent client is making multiple copies of the original folder and not downloading them down to the original one? Again, check the Exowin3.1 folder you're using and make sure the game has downloaded from there. if not, check the duplicate folders checking in the eXoWIn3x/eXo/ExoWin3x and seeing if they're in there instead, if they are, its a simple case of copying over the zip files to the correct Exowin folder and trying again.

It's all just in the same location. I've tried and tried. Do you have to extract all as well?

Do you think it's confusing launch box with Exodos? Maybe do I try a launchbox alternative?

There’s no way for me to know if it’s making new files. I just go into downloads and go into the same files as you have shown. How do I launch the exo3 with launch box? Doesn’t work anymore.

Here is a picture of duplicate torrent file.

no, don't extract the files. Launchbox will do that part as part of installing. just make sure the zip files are downloaded.

you don't need to use a launchbox alternative. The ExoWin3.1 has everything you need to run from the box.

i can't see the picture sadly.

just to confirm are the new game files .zip you downloaded in the eXoWIn3x/eXo/ExoWin3x folder or not? if the files are in the correct location, we can focus on why launchbox itself is not working.

Clarify what you mean Launchbox doesn't work anymore. Can you start the launchbox.exe from within the eXoWin3x folder itself?

Make sure that ExoDos is not on. Like i said earlier if ExoDos has been started with Launchbox and is running in the background, you cannot start Launchbox in the eXoWin3x folder. you may want to check task manager just to make sure launchbox isn't already running.

I definitely used eXoWIn3x/eXo/ExoWin3x many times but when I check all games and hit open it says duplicate torrent. I think that launchbox is not doing its thing. I got out of Exodos and checked task manager. Launchbox doesn’t seem to work for Exo3. It says corrupt when I tried opening but I don’t wanna delete because I don’t wanna mess with Exodos.

When you finished downloading, did you delete the torrent file from the Torrent client? if its still seeding etc, i would stop it and delete the entry.

i've done some playing around and a possible fix for Launchbox.exe corruption issue, and yes its pretty much replacing the launchbox.exe with a working one:

1. in the exowin3x folder, right click on Launchbox.exe and rename the launchbox.exe to something else. Eg LaunchBoxold.exe

2. Go into ExoDos folder and copy that version of launchbox.exe

3. go back into eXoWin3x and paste the launchbox.exe into the folder.

it should look like this:

IDQFXEz.jpg

i tried it and it seems to work. I know its using the ExoDos version because i updated the original Launchbox.exe to the latest verison. When i changed it, it was using an older version (asked to update etc).

Side note:

Unless you've combined the collections together, the launchbox in Exodos and eXoWin are 2 separate versions (they open up different collections after all). See below for my launchboxes.

wIBcS9e.jpg

They are saved to different locations, when i check program and features its not installed directly, so i don't believe it should impact it.

Thanks. I am looking at this. Right now my PC is not even getting into OS. So I’m typing from my iPhone. My laptop is having problems but I’m gonna bring it in to get looked at.

Wow.. I don’t know if it had something to do with trying the launchbox too much or getting corruptions.

ok so the files are there and looks fine to me. The next step is to make sure ExoWin3.1 fires up properly. What happens when you click on the launchbox.exe ? do we see the corrupt file message? The next thing is probably try my fix to see if that fixes the issue.

Trying to open a game in launchbox and nothing happens when I hit install. For some reason I’m not seeing the duplicate error right now but I’m also not seeing all the games, only about 28 in the files.

Interesting. can we confirm that 3d dinosaur adventure was downloaded? i checked the first video at the 34 second mark and i don't see the zip file for it (it should be near the top starting with numbers, but the the adventures for victor games .zip files are the first ones. See an earlier picture i screenshoted of my s\eXoWin3x\eXo\eXoWin3x folder). perhaps it hasn't downloaded or it might not be there. i would test with another like avaiation adventure or phantasmagoria (1995) which i can see the .zip files in the video.

I'm not sure whether Windows or AV might be blocking it (doesn't trust it). I suppose one thing you could try is opening the launchbox.exe as adminstrator (right click on the launchbox.exe and select run as administrator. May need to click on more options for it to appear). But it worked for the other games so perhaps thats not the issue.

not sure why its loading only a few games. which is a bit odd. What search criteria are you using? see drop down in top left corner. The other thing is try and search for a game and see if it appears. if it does, try scrolling down and see how far it goes. What is the last game on the list.

The last thing you can do is run the setup exowin3x.bat and press 1 to reconfigure exowin3.1. it will just create a fresh build and reset everything back to to what it was. but thats one of the last things to do whilst we do some troubleshooting.

I just tried to download the whole Exo3Windows to see if that would make it easier to access every game. Here’s a message I see but don’t understand exactly how to download the until.zip

As per my previous suggestion, what happens when you tried either avaiation adventure or phantasmagoria (1995) ? Did those install ok?

if it does, i would try downloading the 3d dinosaur game again and making sure the zip is in eXoWin3x\eXo\eXoWin3x
