I don't know if you consider it a Japanese game, but The Evil Within is probably my favorite game made by the Japanese developer Shinji Mikami.

Other games I liked made by Japanese developers include RE4, MGSV TPP, RE7, RE2 Remake, and I'm looking forward to RE8 as well.

That said, I do not like the stuff Kojima and even Mikami have made lately. Death Stranding was horrible, and The Evil Within 2 was nowhere near as good as TEW 1. I never thought I'd say it, but sadly, CAPCOM are actually putting out better stuff than Mikami or Kojima anymore.

The original Final Fantasy 7 (haven't gotten to try the remake yet) gets top billing.

Yakuza 0 is the best one I've played that was made in the past five years.

Scrolling through my GOG Galaxy and the only Japanese PC games I've spent significant time with in the last 10 years are by Fromsoft. I've played a fair amount of Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Switch, but I didn't finish either. So I'll go with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

I loved Death Stranding and agree that Yakuza 0 was a lot of fun, but I have to go with Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale. It's my favorite fantasy shopkeeper tycoon game, and the best JRPG too.

That's a pretty broad category. There's Pokemon, the Super Smash Bros series, the Yu-Gi-Oh games, Ogre Battle and Harvest Moon that I can think of right now.

I've never really liked JRPGs. I tried a lot of them, but I think I only finished Paper Mario 64 and Final Fantasy VIII, and that last one only after restarting several times over many years and regretting actually playing it to the end when I did.

That being said, I think if I do have to pick a favourite it would be the Pokemon games (specifically 3rd generation), which are pretty similar to JRPGs in a lot of ways.

Super Metroid. I spent a year clearing the map of that game, this was 20+ years ago before I saw people speedrun the entire game in under an hour.

Yeah, that's easily my least favorite Final Fantasy. Even worse than 13. The music from the opening credits was great, it has more summons than any other Final Fantasy, and that's pretty much all the good bits regarding the game.

I had FF13 on PS4, it had too many cut scenes. I restarted once and skipped every cut scene and got about half way into game in 3 hours, it takes way longer if you watch it all.

I wasn't really suited to story driven rpg though, its why I don't get a lot of them.

Oh, yeah, most JRPGs are very story driven. I think part of the reason why most the early ones didn't give you any character choice was because that makes it harder to tell a story.

Chrono Trigger and Resident Evil 4 are some of the best ones I have played. The last game I played and loved was Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night by the legendary Koji Igarashi. Here is a little taste from that game:

This is a really hard question as I couldn't identify which game is made in Japan or not. Most games are I guess.

I'll vote Yakuza Zero. It takes place in Japan, has Japanese culture, and talks in Japanese.

As a history buff, Dynasty Warriors series, Nobunaga's games.. things of that sort are my favorite, mainly because i love the history aspect to Japan, including the presences of samurai. So being able to play games from the strategy to mowing down crowds of armies with a chair or a fan genres is great. I do like other ones mentioned here though, RE, super mario, you know, the games everyone likes lol.

My favoraite was a ARPG called "Zwai", by FALCOM. The art was a little too cute, but the game play and story was nice. Still wish I could play it again!
