someone will do it, and there will be push back, but as Asmon said, it just takes one good game where people put up with it and then it will become normal... no... I won't sit through 5 minutes of commercials in a game. I stopped watching TV to avoid them.

Needs to be zero tolerance, Commercials break immersion.

@ZedClampet the last two links are the same.
Hasn't this been relatively common since the mid 2000s? We've seen it quite a lot in sports games and racing games and even in stuff like Uncharted (Subway) and Death Stranding (Monster Energy). As for ads streamed in, yeah, that would be different, but also not unprecedented; wasn't it the Burnout series that had changeable ads? I think we even had a US Presidential Campaign advertising there.

That said, checkout PiHole. There's other devices and software out there that do this as well, though I have PiHole on my network; it can be a bit fiddly when you first get it setup, but once you've got it configured to your liking, it's wonderful. Between it and uBlock, I have no ads on anything in my house; even using my phone, it'll block stuff in apps. There's actually a weather app I've been meaning to buy a subscription to, but I keep forgetting because it can't annoy me with ads.

I dont know if we have any Dynasty Warriors fans in here but the new installment is...pretty damn good. There is controversy around how KOEI has tackled this franchise this time around, but i personally like it. (except for having no COOP)

What i dont like is that, at a base game its 70 usd!! Its good, combat feels great, it has the most enemies its ever had on 1 screen so you really feel powerful in that 1 v 1000-type setting and runs absolutely beautifully but i cant see myself paying 70 bucks. They wanted a 100 for the EA version of 3 days and it gives you 1 set of clothing and a in-game book....yippy.

I will probably get it on sale, its not like i wont be playing but im not spending 76-80 (after tax) for it esp when its missing one major component that hooked me awhile ago (doing battles with a partner in COOP).

What if you got the game for free in exchange for watching the advertisements?

As in my example above, Resident Evil 7 with commercials between sections? Nope, not even free. Or how about having to watch a commercial before every boss fight in an MMO?

"Who dares enter my private sanctum? I will destroy you, but first, a message from my sponsor."

Yeah, advertisements in games is a pretty horrible idea, assuming you are still paying full price for the game. What if you don't? What if you got the game for free in exchange for watching the advertisements?
It's going to be nearly impossible to make up the development costs of a AAA game through ads. But even if they managed to charge vastly more for the ads than you normally get from digital ads, most of the money AAA games make seems to come from people who buy the games but don't ever get around to playing them, so most of the people would never even see an ad. Then there are all the people who would be using in-app ad blockers.

How about a sign outside the sanctum that says, "AT&T presents: Large Bear"?

But then if the bear killed you multiple times you'd be cursing AT&T, calling their customer support, etc.

Good point. And, even when people do play, most don't finish the game. Advertisers are going to want to be in the tutorial and opening scenes, not in the late game.

An equally worse is the product placements in games. "Quick pass me the bounty towel sheets! they are 30 times more absorbent then other leading brands! it will clean up this blood quickly... and with one sheet. "

"should have got some life insurance. if he bought one with (company x) his family would have had a massive payout after 10 years" "Plus the free cuddly toy would have made his daughter happy. But now... now her father is gone. And no free toy to keep her company to remember him by..."

Someone needs to make a satirical game just like that.

If you are looking for a game similar to another game, the following site is pretty good and can find even the most niche of games. You may want to uncheck the box to show unreleased games. The lists it creates aren't perfect, but if you actually go through the list you can usually find some interesting games.

Of course, the thing that makes all of these tools a worse than they should be are the Steam tags, which are often wrong. Hopefully they'll come up with an AI or something that can clean them up. With over 100,000 games, I think it's too late for humans to do it :) Plus, we're the original source of the problem anyway. Let AI do it, and we may argue with it, but it should at least be consistent.
Thanks, this one seems much better, at least in "hit rate"!

Someone needs to make a satirical game just like that.
Rockstar Games used to be great at satiracally criticizing the state of games. With GTA VI upcoming, I would be surprised if they weren't taking notice.

This is exactly how mobile gaming works. Often in combination with microtransactions. But like @ZedClampet said, this isn't worth it for AAA games.
I don't play mobile games so I wouldn't know. I think the novelty of mobile games quickly wore thin about 1 month after having my first smart phone. Now all I have are banking apps, travel apps (hotel booking and such), work apps, and one music streaming app.

I am not a Dynasty Warrior player, but I under its appeal and I have read recent articles praising this new one as a return to form.

You'd have threads accusing the devs of AT&T being able to up the difficulty of the bear depending on how much money they spent on the ad, therefore making you see the sign more. Or maybe AT&T pays for every view of the sign so the devs made the bear more difficult to give the sign more views.

Ridiculous as it sounds you know both the scenarios are likely to happen if ads were to be presented that way.

I played a bunch of Ancient Enemy today. My kid was in the same room, so I needed something that wasn't too scary or inappropriate (so no BG3).

The game is described as a "strategic RPG card game", so I thought it was going to be a deckbuilder game, but instead it's one of those games that use a puzzle game to charge abilities. There are a lot of them for match-3 games, but this one uses Golf Solitaire rules, with each different colour card charging different abilities.

Despite it not being what I expected, I did like it. Solitaire can be nice to kill time, but can get boring quickly after a game or two. Ancient Enemy adds some more complexity and variety to keep it interesting.

GTA does indeed satrical take of american consumption/culture. i listen to it a lot in the radio shows or the odd tv show.

As if they have more than one brand of paper towels within reach. Why do they have more than one brand? What's that other brand for? "Quick, pass me the off brand paper towel, Bounty is too good for this mess!"

Why stop there? maybe the game intentionally pushes you to click on the link outside of the game to get a p2w advantage.

" Oh shut it steve! Bounty is the only way! if you go to www.bounty.com we can see that Bounty one sheet are more effective! if we go there NOW we can get a free stash box!"

*stares at screen*

"that reminds me commander, if we go to www.bounty.com/gamex we can get some special intel on a stash of rare crafting materials. i'll add it to one of our PRIMARY objectives to have a look at that site. it could be useful!"

"Good thinking. Julia" *Stares at screen* "Commander, i'm getting additional intel from high command that someone is providing resource codes on the back of monster energy drink cans. We should check it out in our nearest supermarket and make use of this fantastic offer. I think that if we do it at least 20 times we can get some unique power armor that would give us an advantage against the forces of evil. "

*lifts up example drink*

"Remember commander, you need to quench your thirst and stay energized by drinking monster energy drinks. "

i could go on, like how i could earn respect/romance points by buying/entering certain codes but will the AAA industry go that far? i know some energy drinks and super noodles had COD codes and doritos did a starfield promotion but no idea what they did tbh.

The patientgamers subreddit had 150 posts about the games each poster played that year. The moderator went through all of them and made an overview of all of that data:

I played a couple of hours of Warhammer III with a friend of mine this evening, me as Kislev and him as Dwarves. We took over for the AI in every battle that we played, but I'm pretty sure that just made the game easier as neither of us are particularly good at the game, especially without pausing. Not that we're trying very hard to win, but I was quite happy I managed to flank and destroy one of my friend's cannons.

When we stopped playing my headphones were almost empty, but my wife wanted to use them. I was going to charge them with our phone charger, but it's a USB-C to USB-C while my headphones use a USB to micro-USB charger. Our PC only has two working USB ports, on the back, which are already being used by the mouse and keyboard.

It does have two USB 3.0 ports on the front, but they haven't worked since we took over this PC from a friend of hours. However, I decided to have another look at them. Turns out the cables for those ports came from behind a rack for a CD-ROM reader, went underneath the plate the motherboard is mounted on and the plugs were underneath the rack for harddrives. Once I managed to pull them free and plugged them in the USB ports started working.

Would've been nice to figure that out several years ago instead of having to unplug my keyboard every time I used my wired controller, but oh well.

Runescape are trying it now, its where I heard Asmon's comment.

Shame PC's load stages so fast now, they could have used the loading screens as adverts all that time.

Well, took me like two years between receiving the poster and getting the frame to hanging it up, but it's finally done. I'm not entirely sure about the placement, but I do like that I can see it from my desk.

Cheers brother! I mustve missed this post!

So i had somethin weird happen today. I started receiving emails that i was selling items on steams community market! The thing is though, the money from these listings was adding up in my wallet. So i jumped into action, changed my email and steam password, set-up a new authenticator, de-listed my items and got put on a marketplace selling hold for 2 weeks.

Thing is, i retained all the money from whatever was sold which was just a bunch of .01-.04 cent items that i didnt really care about. I had, however, csgo skins/music bundles that ranged from 10-20 dollars, but they werent listed or sold.

So i guess a hacker decided to sell a bunch trading cards/bananas that i had sitting in my vault for a grand total of 4.99, which is now sitting in my wallet lol.
