Not many people know as much as they think, either... but thats another problem.
Self proclaimed experts...
Problem is computers went from something only nerds would use to something that is easy to use, and for most part you don't have to understand how it all works... its magic. Apples and Chromebooks just make it so easy you don't have to know how it works.
Went from something some people used at work to an appliance people had in their homes in about 10 years. Too fast.
So we jumped a step there too - where the average population member knows how to fix problems on their PC.
Instead it just became an appliance. Something someone else fixed if it broke down.
To the benefit of Apple who would just sell them a new one; repair stores who profit off people not knowing jack; and forums who have to explain it the the few who know enough to find an answer themselves, but to the detriment of the users who have to get someone to come fix their email problem... or any other problem that is easy to fix if you know who to ask (or how to actually find results using Google Search (but knowing who you should trust is also hard)). Paying people to reinstall windows... nope.
It was too fast, went from nothing to boom... everyone was left to work it out themselves while others rushed to work out how to make money on it, and off the people who don't know anything. Keeping population in the dark was profitable.
I been into computers since 1982 so it wasn't that hard for me.
