Not many people know as much as they think, either... but thats another problem.

Self proclaimed experts...

Problem is computers went from something only nerds would use to something that is easy to use, and for most part you don't have to understand how it all works... its magic. Apples and Chromebooks just make it so easy you don't have to know how it works.

Went from something some people used at work to an appliance people had in their homes in about 10 years. Too fast.

So we jumped a step there too - where the average population member knows how to fix problems on their PC.
Instead it just became an appliance. Something someone else fixed if it broke down.

To the benefit of Apple who would just sell them a new one; repair stores who profit off people not knowing jack; and forums who have to explain it the the few who know enough to find an answer themselves, but to the detriment of the users who have to get someone to come fix their email problem... or any other problem that is easy to fix if you know who to ask (or how to actually find results using Google Search (but knowing who you should trust is also hard)). Paying people to reinstall windows... nope.

It was too fast, went from nothing to boom... everyone was left to work it out themselves while others rushed to work out how to make money on it, and off the people who don't know anything. Keeping population in the dark was profitable.

I been into computers since 1982 so it wasn't that hard for me.

its just like cars. Most people, if they have a problem, pay someone else to fix it... unless its simple like putting in oil or replacing a tyre.
PC is the same... most people pay for repairs even if a majority of windows problems are easy to fix. Its just easier to do it that way.

Its the small minority of car/pc owners who are willing to get hands dirty and fix it without paying others to do it for them. Most of my problems with PC in the last 10 years have been worked out without outside help, it was only one caused by a peripheral that had me get someone else test PC for me, as I couldn't work that out... until I got it home. Problem didn't happen to them while they had PC... reduced causes somewhat.

Having the time to work out how to fix most of Windows problems is simply something most people don't have.

Hence its an appliance to them.

Note: Windows is really hard to break now. Compared to 25 years ago. The amount of time between problems for me can be counted in years. It can be rock solid. Mine mostly is.
