Well that's because it isn't real, it's a game, that can be taken two ways
But running around slaughtering people (NPC's) isn't "real" either, so I find it a nice break, some games I romance the same NPC, some games I switch up, just depends if I am using a male or female PC.
My Wife asked me once why I would play a Female PC and I replied it was much nicer than staring at Male Dragonborn's Butt all day!
I have to say to each their own, it is not my way or the highway.
Nice reading a different opinion even though I don't know some of the games listed.

I´ve played the Mass Effect trilogy 2ce and there are indeed romance options. As well heterosexual, homosexual and even with aliens, i don´t know the word for that.
But you can see them coming from far away and are easy to avoid. So why would it bother you?
Me personally had a romance both times I played it, once with a female and once with an alien, just out of curiosity of what would happen. And in fact nothing happens. Once she enters your room they start kissing and the screen turns black. 2 seconds later you are back alone in your room and the game continues. It´s like a little optional sidequest with no reward. You can simply ignore it if you don´t like it.
What i do find very interesting in the story line is that that Asari(alien race) all look like kinda attractive human womans. But when other alien races talk about them they appear to look like attractive females from their race. So they are passive shapeshifters. They look different depending on what alien race look at them. They also all female and their are no Asari males. The only way for them to reproduce is to mate with the other alien races. I found that very clever and original.

No need to shapeshift if you can get into people's minds! I don't remember if that's what they did, but I do remember that the mating is very much a mental thing.
That's why i said PASSIVE shapeshifters. It doesn't take any them any effort to reform form even when all races look at them they find her attractive depending who looks at them them.
Also remember it's pure fantasy, so don't become to fanatic trying to find some prefer of what you said.

My lot for this topic is I love doing romances.
At the base level I will do them just to see how well they are done. Some are good. Some are cheesy. Some are cringe. A few are great. So I will at least do them for the sake of just doing them, but some characters like Liara I just can not NOT romance because I love their characters so much.
Recently though, with Veilguard, I was hoping to have a Sera level romp in the sheets with my fav freckled dwarf Harding (oddly enough voiced by the same actor as Liara) and while the romance was very sweetly done, the lack of a full on love scene was rather disappointing. In fact, all of the romances in Veilguard are disappointing as they are all basically the same save the dialog.

Well, after approximately twelve playthroughs of ME1, nine playthroughs of ME2 and six playthroughs of ME 3 I have not once played a male Shepard.
