Been playing Path of Exile 2 with my nephews and we recently finished Act 1. The game is very good with an incredible amount of customization for gear/skills and I am also quite impressed with the different bosses you encounter. We have been farming the last area in Act 1 for more mats and have been tinkering in the skill tree and changing up gear. It is a lot of fun to feel how your character is progressing and how small changes can change the outcome of a fight.

Besides that, I have installed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Dead Island 2, and Aliens: Dark Descent on Game Pass, so I have more than enough games to play throughout December month.

Being that you have a Vita, have you ever tried Natural Doctrine? It reviewed absolutely terribly, but I ended up putting like 20-hours into it before hitting a wall with one particular battle.

It's a strategy RPG, though light on the RPG side, that has this weird method of controlling combat where you kind of create action chains with characters to maximize the amount of turns they can go. It's difficult to explain, but when you're playing it right, it almost feels like you're cheating.

I know you're already playing a SRPG with Trails, but figured I'd suggest it anyway.

many thanks for the suggestion. I've come across the game before, but those negative reviews and scores really makes it a hard sell. It has some glaring issues that makes me think twice to even consider it.

More thinking about what games to play. I've downloaded Nobodies a puzzle game we'll see what its like. being a point and click adventure it might scratch that puzzle itch. For some reason i want to play Resident evil 2 remake as i suspect that one run won't take that long (i have to play the game 4 times) So maybe it will be 20-30 tops. Probably.

You know, I would kind of like to play a game like Arcade Paradise that wasn't actually a laundromat simulator. So far every in-game day is 95 percent doing laundry.

if its any consolation the further you upgrade the laundromat and convert it into an arcade store by the end. All it took was nearly 27hr of play. By that point the novelty wore off. Most of the games were pretty dire replicas of the arcade classics.

Kind of funny I said I wanted an arcade game that wasn't mostly a laundromat game, and then I go to Steam and see this which launched today:

@Colif while user reviews are over 90 percent positive for the new Indiana Jones game, it's had a very anemic PC launch, maxing out at just over 10k concurrents and only garnering around 1500 reviews. I think it was just a really awful weekend to launch it.

The competition:

Infinity Nikki--over 10 million downloads (free game)
Path of Exile 2--almost 600,000 concurrents
Marvel Rivals--almost 500,000 concurrents (free game)

Three huge hitters launching at the same time is hard to overcome.

Plus, it's available on Game Pass.

Well, I tried Indiana Jones and The Great Circle for a few hours and it was not to my liking. It looks pretty good and the voice and expressions of Jones are spot on. The Whip and Jones are cool! The main thing that made me stop playing was that I thought most of the interactive tasks/objects were kind of boring. I don't want to run around as Jones picking up stuff to improve my skills or do chores. I wanted a more action-oriented version of Indiana Jones and not your typical RPG stat system dude. I think the game would have been a lot more fun for me if they just made it much simpler, with a focus on action while completely removing stealth mechanics. I don't want to see those question markers on the enemy whenever you get too close, I just want to bash the hell out of them.

I'm having a hard time building up enough interest to launch the game.

If you like a game with a mix of Tomb Raider/Far Cry, then I might be worth a try. It has some similarities while exploring and some do enjoy that aspect. On Steam there aren't many who share my thoughts, so I am definitely in the minority.

I was excited for a multiplayer Control, but I've lost all interest after looking at the Steam page. It seems nothing like Control. Left for Dead, maybe. That's a huge disappointment.

And supposedly Control 2 is going to be an action-RPG.

Played a ton of GTA 4 and Marvel Rivals these past few days. Starting with GTA 4, making progress in the story but having a few annoying bugs with the mods.

I seem to have a very low success rate when launching GTA 4. Something with my mods is creating an error, but there is a workaround, which only works about 10% of the time. It gives me a dialogue box error when launching, and gives me three options, Abort, Retry, and Ignore. Abort and Retry do absolutely nothing. Ignore launches the game, sometimes. I used ChatGPT to upload a screenshot of it since I couldn’t copy and paste it, it said to check a mod I downloaded that is a tiny piece of software that installs the unlocked VRAM patch. Opening that mod said a file I am using is outdated, suggested to update it. I did so, and I still get the error, but funnily enough my chance to launch seems to have improved. I still need to launch it a few times before it works, but once I get into the game I have no issues with that.

Only other issues I’m having are just some very minor annoyances. The trainer mod does not remember your hotkey bindings, son have to set that each time for the first person mode. Just annoying, but I’ve memorized the menu to get to that option fast.

The first person mode on the trainer mod does not work perfectly at all. After using it for a while it’s actually quite rudimentary. By no means does it actually change the game into first person, it simply moves the player camera to Niko’s head and makes his head disappear. This causes some issues like aiming being off, entering cutscenes while in first person shows your character as headless (easy to fix, just press hotkey again to make your head reappear), and when driving very fast the camera pulls back a bit which is just silly looking but doesn’t distract me personally. It’s really best for just messing around with, by no means is it meant to play the whole game like this. But driving, exploring the city, getting into fist fights, all very fun while in first person mode.

I also put in a good 6 hours into Marvel Rivals. I’ll preface this by saying I actually kind of hate superheroes. Not the characters themselves, but specifically the Marvel movies and shows and such. I’m quite sensitive to cringey dialogue and I’ve never seen a Marvel movie post-Iron Man 1 that has not made me cringe. The writers seem to adhere to a very strict writing guideline which makes the dialogue as inoffensive as possible and as dorky as they can imagine it to be. If you go to YouTube or TikTok and search something like “cringe marvel dialogue” you will get exactly what I mean. This sort of dialogue is why I can’t play more than 10 minute of Marvel Midnight Suns. Iron Man immediately hits you with cringe and I had to turn the game off.

All that out of the way, I actually had a blast with it. The dialogue is very little, just some minor character quips here and there, but when i’m focused on the fight it doesn’t matter to me. What matters is the gameplay, and it’s very fun. You have tons of characters to choose from, all of which are unlocked immediately so you just choose who you want. Each character has totally unique moves so there is a ton to play and experience here. The basic premise is that it is a 6v6 third person online shooter. It plays/looks a bit like third person Overwatch but with some different features. One of its biggest features is the ability to do character teamups, where two specific characters can come together to unleash a strong ability in the fight.

I’ve mainly played Iron Man, Wolverine and Hulk. I’ve learned their moves pretty well and have been doing good with them. Wolverine has a rage meter that builds up as he takes and reviews damage, and it just makes your attacks faster, so it’s almost encouraged to jump into the middle of the battle with him and try to do as much damage as possible. The game can become very chaotic, especially visually. My girlfriend said it was overstimulating her too much and had to walk away lol. It’s a very fun game, matches are like 5-10 mins max, you can almost instantly join a new match after the last one ends (CoD need to take notes of this so badly)

I would say that this is probably the reason for low PC player counts, but Stalker 2 also launched on GP with huge amounts of marketing for that version, and still sold over a million Steam copies. I suppose the reason is that Stalker is a predominately PC series with a hardcore player base, Indiana Jones is a more mainstream game probably targeting Xbox players the most.

That game trailer reminded me of Deep Rock Galactic (which is a very good game)

That's one of the games everyone but me likes :)

I got all excited to try the V Rising first person mod. It actually works fine, but I discovered the game is about 20 times harder in first person.

*******

Playing some Wasteland 2 on Game Pass. Really enjoying it so far, but I've only finished the first mission.

I love checking out first person mods in non first person games. I remember using one in The Witcher 3 many years ago and was blown away by viewing the world from a new perspective. It was extremely wonky back then, but I did a quick google search and there seems to be much better ones out there. One called Gervant First Person on Nexus Mods was updated just 5 days ago and includes a much more fleshed out first person experience. I may need to check that one out.

We'll see (maybe), but Game Pass doesn't usually have a huge impact on sales, and Xbox almost never outsells PC. If Xbox outsold PC in this case, it was because of the games I listed above dominating the weekend.

If Game Pass were killing sales, they'd kill Game Pass. You can't come close to making up AAA development costs from Game Pass. The whole point of it is to increase sales. It's really best for small team indie games. Now they can make good money (for them) from being on Game Pass.

New Cyberpunk patch came out today. Some minor additions but very welcome nonetheless. Keanu(Johnny) will now ride with you occasionally, more vehicle and character customizations, photo mode revamped and now lets you display your photos in your apartment, and that’s really it for me. Performance boost for Intel CPU’s is nice too for team blue users. It may not seem like a lot, but I absolutely love when devs do this to single player games. Majority of CDPR employees are working on the other big three projects they have in the works, but some crack team of devs who love Cyberpunk decided to keep their heads down and working on the game they love. Major respect to CDPR for allowing that to happen. Most other AAA studios won’t bother spending the time, money or manpower adding minor additions like this.

CDPR supports its games for quite awhile. Last patch for Witcher 3 was in July of 2023, a little over 8 years after release. They even did a complete overhaul of graphics and systems a couple of years ago.

They are huge now, with offices in Canada and Boston.

Upcoming games:

Witcher 4: Currently in full production in Poland
Witcher Sirius: Currently in full production by Molasses Flood (Boston)
Witcher Remake: Being done by another company from Poland (Fool's Theory)
Cyberpunk 2: Supposedly going into full production around now. Being worked on by both their Canadian office and Poland.
Project Hadar: Preproduction probably in Poland.

More companies need to follow this precedent. I’m merely a lowly consumer, but my thought process is, if you continue to support a beloved game for years on end even with little to no financial incentive, your fan base will grow stronger and more likely to stick with you, which therefore leading to guaranteed sales of your new product. Makes sense to me but I’m not a financial expert. Surely how large companies see it is the immediate returns in profit. Instead of fixing up their older games, keep making new ones, charge them full price, and you will make your money faster. This is my take on it, it makes sense both ways from the consumers standpoint and the corporations standpoint.

I wholeheartedly agree with the concept of continuing to support your product, but I also have to acknowledge that CDPR sells many more copies of its games than your average AAA company, which gives them a lot more flexibility. Witcher 3 sold over 20 million copies on Steam while Indiana Jones will be lucky to sell 500k. No way Microsoft will let them continue to work on that game for years when they are going to have lost money on the game. In fact, they'll be lucky to not be shut down entirely, particularly considering this is two duds in a row.

I got to act 2 and almost immediately went back to the "will you take the high road or the low road" fork in the road, so I could do both. I'll probably pay for it in the end by slamming into the level cap before the game is done, but I couldn't skip the Underdark and I couldn't ignore Lae'zel's plea to see her people. They are experts at fighting mind flayers, after all.

I made a bee-line for the Gith's hangout and got Lae'zel's request satisfied. However, I found out an awful truth: Githyanki eat miniature giant space hamsters!! HORRIBLE! I'm not sure what to do with the sample I found, though. I know from the videos that Minsc will be showing up at some point. Should I keep it as evidence? Should I sell... I mean burry it in the back yard with sad music playing? Should I see if Minsc will eat it if I include it in the party's dinner??

I don't want to see those question markers on the enemy whenever you get too close, I just want to bash the hell out of them.
Shouldn't you have to spend 90% of your time in a library? I seem to remember the professor himself saying words to that effect... ;)
I’m quite sensitive to cringey dialogue and I’ve never seen a Marvel movie post-Iron Man 1 that has not made me cringe.
How can this be? You've been reading our posts for nearly five years!! Have you got some sort of cringe-filter plug-in??

Me, I grew up watching old Godzilla movies and Johnny Sokko. It's hard to make me cringe. (Puns can do it - they didn't translate, so I wasn't able to build up my defenses.)
