I do kind of wonder if there's a feeling of discontent I'm not properly identifying that causes this in me. I do think it tends to happen when I don't have something else to let my brain obsess about, be that a particular game or project or something.

I think I tend to be happier when a project of some sort is absolutely eating all my brain space. I don't think my wife loves it, but I do think it's generally helpful to my well-being.
Yeah Home Depot are great at resolving things. It's also not surprising sometimes weird mistakes happen, after all, they are dealing with big pro orders from construction businesses, AND consumers. When I moved to where I am now I'd forgotten to take the furniture dolly I'd borrowed from a friend. Fortunately the Home Depot I mentioned was right on the way there, so I stopped in and rented a furniture dolly and a box dolly (what used to be called a hand truck, but with a flip down loop of tubular steel). That box dolly came in really handy, saved some time and my back I think. They also pressure washed them both for me as I told them I was going to be using them in an apt building I was moving into and didn't want to take them into the place all grungy.
You know, you could always do that noise again, upload it to YouTube, and post it here... what? No?? Oh come on! Be a pal! ;)
I've never ever even been good at doing impressions, especially on cue when asked. And that wasn't even an attempted impression, more of a weird sounding yawn that happened to come out. Of course when people are standing there asking you to do an impression they don't give a damn about all that.

So I was at a Christmas party tonight. Of course there were games, and you can't have a party game without some trivia. So one of the questions was along the lines of, "Before turkey, what was the first type of poultry that was served during the holidays?"

I didn't know the actual answer, so I blurted out, "The African Swallow!"

Expecting at least a couple of laughs, I was appalled that of the 20+ people that were there, nobody had a clue (except my wife of course) what I was talking about and looked at me like I was a crazy person. Well, I am a crazy person, no doubt, but boy did I ever feel like I was with the wrong crowd.

And for those keeping score, apparently it was geese/goose.

Reminds me of the time a bunch of fellow residents where I lived prior were having a conversation around holiday time of year about their fave drinks. Being as it had been a long time since I was even a beer drinker, and never was into hard booze much, I just sarcastically blurted out, "How bout that sweet potato vodka! They all laughed, but when I got home just for shits and giggles I checked the net to see if there was such a thing. Turns out they make such a drink in South Korea, and it is known as one of the most widely sold liquors in the world!

BTW, on the subject you brought up of Orbea eMTBs earlier, check this out. It was done just 2 and a half weeks ago, so appropriate for holiday cheer. It's a group of 4 Canadian mt bikers who are riding some absolutely insane dense forest downhill trails that are very steep and technical, and some quite slippery. The guy filming is on an Orbea Wild.

Note the 3 guys other than the one filming aren't wearing gloves, and the guy filming and the heavy guy with the ZZ Top looking beard aren't wearing full face helmets. No pads on knees, elbows, etc, I can see either. I can't tell you how many trips I'd have to take to the hospital were I to try such things, IF I could even live through it!

You know they're all native Canadians by their hockey sounding names.

I finally started going to the LA Fitness that's very close to where I live now. Yesterday one of the guys and a new gal he was training were putting me through their "evaluation", which is in reality more of a "We'll embarrass you in front of all the members, convince you your body badly needs more muscle mass", followed by a "we'll coach you for $65 a session, but it's cheaper per session the more sessions you do", spiel.

I mean, I knew it was coming, after all, pretty much every big chain gym does that routine, and the staff they use aren't even licensed trainers. I just humbly went along with it and said, "you know, I'd love to have a personal trainer, but I just can't afford one". I kind of figured they knew that since my membership is free with my health insurance.

Today I went back in and did a fair bit of stretching on their Precor multi stretch machine, then some ball pushups, then a more rigorous interval workout on the same Matrix recumbent bike than what they evaluated me with yesterday. I put in just over 30 min on it doing 30 sec intervals at max resistance, keeping my heart rate around 105 during the intervals. The distance was just over 5 miles. The main appeal of this machine is it reads your heart rate when you grasp the handles at either side of the seat. It also has a very smooth spin for something that doesn't use a large heavy wheel like a spin bike. The only issue I have with it is it always temporarily loses track of your heart rate when you adjust resistance, no matter how fast you dial in the setting. Then you have to squeeze the handles hard to get it to read again, which can make your hands a bit sore after a half hr. I just think of it in terms of getting in some grip strength workout simultaneously.

Next time I go in I plan to get in some lunges with half twist for quad and core strengthening, some dumbbell pushup rows, and some side planks. I was sore enough after today's workout to warrant using the jacuzzi afterward. Before going in to the jacuzzi I made an embarrassing mistake though. The locker doors if you open them at all swing a little past 90 degrees open, meaning they get in the way of a locker being used to the side of the direction the door swings. So I closed the door, but after wrestling my sweaty gym socks off, I'd forgotten I closed it, and thought the guy using the locker next to mine had his door closed. This caused me to casually toss my socks into his open locker, thinking it was mine. I immediately apologized (twice), but it was so funny I couldn't help but laugh a bit. I don't think he thought it was funny at all though. o_O

I'm considering this gym membership:sweatsmile: Only 250 members are allowed, I'm sure I'll fit right in with my unsophisticated gym clothes, belly as wide as I am tall, and hair on my back like a Sasquatch.

If any of us mere mortals COULD afford a gym like that, it's obvious they push the hype train just as much if not more than any big chain gym does. The giveaway was right at the start of the video, where they give you sugary pastries before you even start an evaluation, let alone a membership. Everyone knows sugar is the worst thing for working out, as it's a fast burn energy that wears off quickly then makes you crash. These guys are just more elaborate hypocrites than average gyms, but the wealthy don't care.

Saw a TikTok video on how to "make your hands useful" by having a ruler tattooed on them. Showed a guy holding his hand next to everyday things to see how big they were.

I don't know how much longer I can take living on this planet with you people.

That's the worst part of having hands with opposable thumbs though; they just sit there doing nothing most the time and really not maximizing my hustle or generating profits in and of themselves.

Those guys are crazy. While I don't like riding with gloves the majority of the time, there's no way I'd ride a trail like that without any. And regardless of how steep/technical that is (which I have no interest in riding), that's honestly way too much chunk for me. There's a trail not too far from me that's full of chunk and technical features, but probably not as steep (I forget the name). I rode it back in 2019 shortly after getting my Stumpjumper. Although it is all completely covered (very dense with trees and fairly technical), it was also the middle of July, temps were in the high 90s and it was VERY humid in there, and absolutely no breeze. It also hadn't been recently maintained so we had to also contend with overgrowth. On top of that, I came from a 26" hard tail to a 29er with the Stumpy, and I wasn't quite used to riding with that wheel diameter yet. I want to say it was the humidity that did me in, as it took maybe 45 mins or so for my body to settle and stop sweating afterward. But honestly I think it was all that chunk. I haven't ridden it again and have no plans to. I'll take a flowy trail with jumps any day of the week.

I mean, I knew it was coming, after all, pretty much every big chain gym does that routine, and the staff they use aren't even licensed trainers. Sounds like good news if you're back in the gym training, so I take it your back is healed up?

Yeah I don't care for those big chain gyms. I grew up training in old-school type gyms (almost all free weight, little machines). I then tried LA Fitness in my early 20s. They didn't bother giving me "the show & tell" since I was already at around 15% body fat and 240 lbs back then and in really good shape. I would have told them no anyway lol. BUT, it was way too corporate for me, and too many people who didn't care to put things back where they belong. Aggravating. I don't think I lasted a few months before I canceled and went back to my local gym. In which case, I've never really abandoned training with free weights, and today I have a dedicated setup in my garage (power rack, olympic weights, incremental dumbell set, and leg press). I used to train on a 2-on/1-off, 3-on/1-off split routine back when I trained heavy, but these days I train 4-days a week on a 2-day split twice a week. It works better for riding since I don't train on Wednesdays or the weekend, and now that I'm older that extra day of recovery time is almost mandatory. I used to try to ride mid-week at my local trails, then do bigger rides on Saturdays. But these days I'm happy enough to just to hit the dirt on the weekends.

The best training I ever did was when I did amateur boxing in my youth. We had timed training circles with situps, pushups, fast punches on the bag, medicine balls thrown at our stomachs, jumping over the back and under the legs, and then straight to jumping jacks. We also did a lot of running and some other stuff I can't remember. The funniest training we did was basketball boxing. We put on gloves and the objective was to hit the guy with the basketball. Not in the face, but in the body. It was very good conditioning.

I remember being super tired after each training, but it was the best feeling of tired ever. You pushed yourself and could see the results in the ring. One of my trainers is still going strong, almost 70 years old now. He is built like a rock and when we tried to wrestle with him, he was literarily impossible to move. Super strong and even trained boxers on a national level.

Yup.

Yesterday, I received the item I had been obsessing about for a couple of weeks. Of course, as soon as I ordered it, I pretty much stopped thinking about it and now that I've received it, I feel completely indifferent about it. It's cool, don't get me wrong, but aside from being vertically oriented, it does nothing my regular handheld doesn't and otherwise pretty much does everything worse; I do like that I can use it in one hand like my phone, but otherwise, why the hell do I have this thing?

Well, I suppose I'll toss it in a drawer until I get the inkling to actually use it a bit more.

New one on the left.

Hmm.. the lack of analog sticks might be problematic.
Actually only yesterday did I come across the Ayaneo Flip, after reading the end of year feature on the PC Gamer website.
It looks quite tempting... Do I need it? Indeed I don't.
But I also wonder if I couldn't hack something similar with a Raspberry Pi..

Lacking analogerue isn't much of a problem when the system is designed around emulating consoles that never had them. My issue is, I already have a handheld that does those systems better and then also does more, so why did I get caught-up in the hype and buy this one? Probably because I had a similar one for two years that I loved, but stopped using when I upgraded to the one on the right and was hoping to rekindle that magic or something.

You can definitely build lots of Pi based handhelds, especially with the newer Pico. This guy does lot of cool stuff with them:

Thanks..
Any idea about something like this but with a keyboard? I found the MNT Pocket Reform, but it's a bit too dear.
But surely there should be something with a desktop environment and keyboard out there?...

Not too many out there that I'm familiar with, but GPD does make the Win 2 and there's also the original, always wanted one of those.

One of my current ideas is to take my 10" Surface Go tablet and pair it with a large enough telescoping controller and mostly use it for (much ) older games and retro emulation.

All that said, the Steam Deck serves me perfectly well. Using the onscreen keyboard for the rare occasion that I need to go into desktop mode works pretty well and for anything outside that, I have a dock, a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse that'll do the job. But mostly if you want to play mouse and keyboard driven games, the amount of controls, paired with the touchpads works exceptionally well. I've played 100 hours of Transport Fever 2 before they ever added controller support and I still prefer to use the M/K binds I have in lieu of it.

I’m not one to really have New Year’s resolutions and stick with them but this year may be a bit different. I have been feeling this for years but especially lately games are just not very fun anymore. I may play something for a bit but after an hour I just get bored. I then proceed to doom scroll my library or the store and end up wasting more time than I’d like.

I think I’ll have a resolution to play less games. Cherish them more and not take them for granted. Whenever I’m bored I automatically look towards games to entertain me but then I get bored of the thing that is supposed to cure my boredom. Huh. I think I’ve just played too many games that I don’t cherish my time with them as much as I would if I only played games occasionally. Then there is the whole thing about not finding a game you really want to play.

It’s been months since I’ve sat and played a game for longer than 1 hour 30 minutes in a session. This isn’t a bad thing at all, but to me it points out the fact that I’m not really being fulfilled with my time with games. I may spend an hour or so playing, but I always turn it off due to boredom, not because I feel satisfied and I am done playing for the night.

Gaming is fun to do occasionally, but once it becomes a daily habit, you start to lose the special interest and it becomes mundane. It’s been a daily habit of mine for well over a decade. This may be the year where I should seriously consider taking a significant break. Also, with all the amazing games coming out this year, it’s gonna be hard to keep up with everything.

I don’t even know what exactly I want to play anyways. I look at all the games on sale and just go, I don’t think I will be fully interested in this. There is a lot of games I’d love to try, but how many of those will I spend some significant hours in? The answer is very very few. The only game I can think of that I am actually fully excited about is GTA 6, but that’s a given with just how much of a massive cultural phenomenon each GTA release is.

I can see myself in a lot of what you're saying, although not entirely for the same reasons.

If you're feeling stuck in a rut, perhaps a change of pace, a break in the routine would help?
For instance, I like to read books or certain longform articles on websites on the history of games and computers.
If nothing new is interesting, why not replay something you haven't played in a long time but have fond memories of?
Otherwise, maybe a total break from this hobby or start getting into something else you might find interesting. Last September, after many years of casual interest I have finally started learning Japanese (I'm 38 and working) and, just for 90 minutes a week, it's something I can see myself progressing, and I look forward to it all week.
Just an example, of course...

I still have Christmas gifts I haven't opened. I didn't go to my wife's family get-together because I hadn't slept in 48 hours, so she just brought back my gifts, and they are still unopened just sitting under the tree.

Based on the history of this event, the energy required to pick them up, unwrap them and decide which closet to put them in is too high compared to the possibility that there will be something good in one of them.

I've told them all on multiple occasions that my preference is not to receive gifts, but they don't listen to me.

Obviously, had I been there, I would have acted like I loved every gift and couldn't believe I had been living without it, but with no one looking, I'm finding my motivation lacking.

Oh, it's about time to make my New Year's resolution for 2024! Let's see, what have I done this year.... I resolve to put in a little more overtime at work. I get zilch out of it, being on a salary, but the office is going through some big changes, and they've supported me well over the past ump-teen years, I can give them a little extra.

And I did! Resolution successful! All it takes is a little willpower and a lot of procrastination. ;)

Christmas is 12 days long. You've got until the 5th.

I really have to stop doomscrolling as well. I don't do it with my video game library, but with YouTube shorts and Reddit. The effect is the same though, I'm just wasting time I could either spend being productive, resting or doing something I genuinely enjoy.
