I really have to stop doomscrolling as well. I don't do it with my video game library, but with YouTube shorts and Reddit. The effect is the same though, I'm just wasting time I could either spend being productive, resting or doing something I genuinely enjoy.
I do it on TikTok the most, however I think I’ve curated my algorithm nicely and never get any real brainrotting videos. My YouTube shorts algorithm is entirely messed up and full of AI slop and low effort memes.

I've purposefully avoided TikTok after my wife got into it. We'd often sit down and watch videos together and while she had it curated pretty well, it became apparent very quickly just how easy it is to just keep scrolling even when you hardly retain any of it.

My YouTube shorts are well curated too, they're all either comedy or educational, but if I'm scrolling through 1-minute videos for an hour I don't feel like I've really learned anything or did something enjoyable.

Speaking of YouTube, I just noticed that a ton of my old videos don't have the game specified. They use tags, of course, which is all we had back in then. They were marked as game footage, though, so YouTube would try to guess the game. It chose... poorly. I fixed some of them, but I don't want to go back through all of them!

Happy New Year!

Anyone have any goals or ideas?

I don't generally make resolutions myself, but I guess I have one I'm going to try and stick to: no tournaments.

I can already feel interest in them beginning to spark, but they burned me out hard last year, so I want to avoid that this time around.

Edit: one more, actually: finally get my project car on the road. It'll be 6 years in December 2025 that it hasn't moved. I'm pretty close with it, just need to get over the final few hurdles.

So far I've avoided any doomscrolling and I'm planning to stick with that.

I do also plan on continuing Baldur's Gate 3, but I haven't done that yet. I plan on playing a little bit tomorrow though.

I’m going to see if I can learn more next year. I’ve always loved aesthetics and typography but never been great at designing in that way, so I’m going to try and learn. Hopefully, if I’m successful, I could eventually make some money on the side, but I won’t count my chickens.

My "resolutions" change little as they stay similar every day. This year, however, I bought a 2025 daily journal. I plan to write what I do every day and hopefully it will motivate me to try to accomplish more so that I don't have to write about how I just spent all day doing BS stuff. If I do get to write of some worthy accomplishment hopefully it's a dopamine hit that will motivate me to do even more.

I do not doomscroll, I joyscroll. Addicted to the dopamine hit I get from videos of cats being silly, really bad puns, and other lighthearted stuff, but it can lead to hours of wasted unporoductive time every day.

But, I always want to read more, I always want to produce any kind of finished project in Unreal Engine (not just tinker with stuff), I always want to learn more about music, the piano in particular. I always want to surf the net and social media less. It's always about a new day's resolution, never a new year's.

Anyway, who knows? It might work.

Nasty storm coming in. Probably. There's supposed to be a lot of freezing rain overnight - but the conditions for that are always touchy. There's likely to be a lot of snow, but the weather map has a pretty steep gradient. If the storm stays a little north, a lot might turn into 2 inches. If it goes further south, a lot could turn into a ton.

Whatever the case, though, it's going to get windy and colder. Power outages are likely, so my main worry right now is for my water pipes. (Food is no worry. Refrigerator food goes in the garage, frozen stuff goes outside.)

The one I went to makes you pay for the time you spent there. I think it was about €50 per person for two hours for unlimited food and drinks.

I ended up eating 6 plates. They were fairly small plates and I didn't stack them up, but I was still on the verge of getting nauseous at the end. The quality was hit or miss and even the good stuff wasn't anything to write home about. The lasagna was the most disappointing though: it looked so good and I normally love lasagna, but it was exceptionally bland.

It was a good reminder why I haven't been to a buffet in years.

Well our Seahawks didn't make the playoffs at the end of the first season under an entirely new coaching staff. It was upsetting to me at first, but they finished strong beating the Rams in LA, matching their win/loss record. When I found out how close a margin our Hawks lost the division win by to the Rams, it was eye opening. They had to go to the 5th tie breaking criteria, Strength of Victories through the season.

Our QB Geno Smith ended the year qualifying for a total of $6,000,000 in bonuses via completion percentage, total passing yards, and number of wins. My only nit pick about Geno is he is more often than not too slow to react to pressure, and has made some pretty big mistakes in such situations.

Most say it is unlikely Geno and star receiver Tyler Lockett will be on the team next year. We all know the NFL is a numbers game more than anything, and with salary caps in play it comes down to how efficiently roster money is spent.

The big problem I see is the current QB draft class is not inspiring. We also need a LOT of shoring of our offensive line.

[EDIT]
After posting the above I discovered (a bit late as I was preparing for a colonoscopy), that our Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb was fired. I didn't like his lack of creativity with the run play calls, as was the problem many had with him. Just hope they can find a good replacement. The colonoscopy turned out almost as good as I'd hoped for btw, and I consider probably about as good as can be expected for someone 66 who's never had one before.

Oh, thank f***.

My kids finally returned to school today--though there was an hour delay due to weather--and It's so nice to be free again. Don't get me wrong, I like my kids, I like break because I get to sleep in, but I'm so done with my 4 and a half year old right now. It's like living with an abusive partner, a person who one moment is totally sweet, loving, telling you you're the best thing in the world, only to turn on you a minute later, screaming at you, telling you they hate you, hitting you, throwing things, etc.

I do my best to keep them active, getting them out of the house, but still they turn randomly and I am just so done with this stage. The kid doesn't have autism and is ahead of the group--according to our doctor and the occupational therapist--but I just can't deal with them anymore right now, I'm so exhausted; it's going to be nice to have school back for the several hours a day.

At any rate, I decided I didn't feel like going out to the store today to get some basics, as the weather does suck (though I'd like to test out my new tires), so I'm baking bread for the first time. I collected all the ingredients over the last couple of weeks, but have generally just been too tired and worn out to actually bother, so I'm excited to see how it turns out when I finish baking it in a couple of hours.

Also finally time to address a few projects that need addressing. I'm trying to repair and restore an old Xbox 360 controller I own, which I've done in the past, but it's been awhile since I soldered anything; in desoldering and lifting off the old cord, I stupidly scraped off the covering over some traces on the board. I don't think I actually damaged the traces themselves, but I'm going to solder the new cord on today and see what happens. I'll certainly be posting pictures if all goes well...

I've also got a new battery for my Steam Deck, which looks like a pain in the butt to install, but it's time. My Deck is reporting my battery health to be 70%, which isn't surprising, given that I've had the thing for two and a half years now (hard to believe it's been that long). I'm hoping the battery is decent, as I elected for a $50 Amazon one over the $100 one from iFixit; reviews seem to be good on Amazon, with the only complaints being from people that don't seem to be aware that you need to calibrate a new battery when you install it.

Anyway, here's to hoping.

The snow was fairly bad here, though not as bad as it could have been. Snow on the driveway varied from about half a foot to a drift that was 16 inches deep. I had to shovel off the top of the drift, but my little snow blower was able to handle the rest of it. Barely. Back to the shovel again to scrape off some of the ice/sleet at the bottom of it all.

There's an even bigger drift by the front door. The mailman hasn't even tried to get to my mailbox yet.

We should get above freezing on Thursday. Briefly. There's a lot of sunshine, though, so we're getting some melting anyway.

P.S. A kid on the news said that, if school stays cancelled until Friday, it will be 4 weeks without school.

I remember snowdays (weeks) like that back in my Northern Michigan days. Used to shrug them off like they were nothing. Now having been in Florida for 25 years or so I'm bitching that it's 42 degrees (5.6C) outside.

Seahawks.. sigh. I still haven't haven't forgotten the Packers' 2014 NFC Championship melt down. And no, that wasn't a Seahawks TD to end the Fail Mary game. So I was happy the Packers were able to contribute to the Hawks missing the post-season :D Don't take me too seriously, though, I'm just cracking wise.

I had my first colonoscopy last July. It was a breeze once I got in there. I pretty much went to the hospital to take a short nap lol. The prep was otherwise the worst part, and also the fear of the unknown during the prep.

Even parents need a break. The day after my wife and I dropped my youngest off at college, and my oldest was also already off at college, we hopped on a plane to Hawaii. No joke. One of the funnest trips we've had of late. We did a mountain bike tour through some of the protected areas of O'ahu, and got to ride right through where they filmed the Gallimimus scene from Jurassic Park. I love my kids, but it was nice to spend time with the wife as it was the first time in 21 years we didn't have to think about our kids much. Had my oldest been with us, he would have been whining about not having any cell reception and not being able to stay in touch with his GF (now fiance) for that measly 3 hours. Judas Priest Almighty.

Here's a shot I took of that area. It was a perfect day for that ride, and I could see the Gallimimus flocking our way...

I'm due for one sooner than later, having just turned 40 last year. My wife has had a few and said the same about the prep, but any medical procedure immediately hits me right in the anxiety!

Looks amazing! I'd love to visit someday.

And yeah, right now we're in the phase of fondly looking back at the freedom we had in our 20s and questioning why we did this to ourselves. Immediately after we got married, she moved to Michigan for 9 months for an internship, but man it was awesome to just be able to hop on a plane over the weekend with only my backpack and pay her a visit.

Now we have weeks of prep just to go on a relatively minor trip or even on a date.

Someday...

When I was younger, going in for medical stuff didn't bother me much. But a lot of that too is I never really had to go in. But once I hit my late 40s and schidt started breaking, the anxiety definitely kicked in lol.

You'll get there. We didn't do any big trips like that when the kids were younger, apart from camping and fishing trips and the like. We didn't take them on their first big trip until they were old enough to appreciate it (early teen and jr. high), which incidentally was also Hawaii lol.

And yeah, right now we're in the phase of fondly looking back at the freedom we had in our 20s

I remember those days! What's ironic is, now we reminisce about our kids when they were little! We were just doing that last night.

Ick... Michigan... in the winter. Some years ago my team had to go Midland for a project at Dow Chemical right in the middle of January. It was dark, bitter cold, and dreary. I understand now why people from out there are miserable. But cool though about the freedom being able to hop on a plane on a whim with just a backpack. I love trips/stints like that! And to get to see your significant other waiting for you when you get there is just priceless!

Yeah that Fail Mary game wasn't officiated well. It was one of many times in my life I was embarrassed to be a Seahawk fan. And no, I don't get upset at rival fan comments, in fact I think I speak for a LOT of Seahawk fans when I say what upsets us most is knowing that most of the games they've lost lately were cases where they had way too many penalties, lack of execution, and rookie mistakes. SO many face palm moments this year. :(

I just got an email test result for the pathology of my colonoscopy. None of the 4 polyps removed were found to be cancerous, but being classified as Tubular Adenomas, they are considered potentially a precancerous growth. I was a bit upset I had to find this on my own, as the result only labeled them Tubular Adenomas, nothing more.

In my searching on the subject I found if you have more than 3 polyps removed and any are bigger than 10mm (one was 15mm, the other three 2mm or less), they recommend having a colonoscopy every 3 years. That is not exactly as good a scenario as I hoped for, but honestly, it's not a big deal to have it done every few years. I had zero discomfort afterward, even from the 15mm one, which was removed via a method called hot snare cautery.
