What was your first RPG?

I especially miss the goodies. Cloth maps aren't available even in collectors editions.

I have a cloth map, icewind dale. It was just the normal game box, back when games had cool posters inside! I need to find a frame for it though. I should find a nice frame at an antique shop. I've been meaning to do just that too. Sound Luke I have a new years project goal. 😉

My first proto-RPG was Hero Quest on Amiga. It was adaptation of the board game with semi-RPG mechanics. It helped start my interest with RPG and dark fantasy.

I can go all the way back to 1982 on the zx spectrum for this , my first rpg would be the hobbit and your role would be to steal the gold from the black dragon in the castle

Morrowind is the first one I can remember getting at launch, but I had been PC gaming for 10 years at that point so there might have been an earlier one.

Guild Wars back when I was around 15 years old. Warrior/Monk was my character and been into GW ever since.

The very first one that I can remember was the Ultima IV-VI trilogy (yeah, I know that's technically 3 games, so !V would be the very first):

But those were the games that really hooked me into the RPG genre. And, hey, the trilogy had cloth maps for each game! I've always been a sucker for cloth maps, you just don't see things like that anymore unless and occasional collector's edition has them.

I played the rest of the Ultima series as they came out, until EA killed off the single player games, ending with the heavily criticized Ultima 9. The Might & Magic series through #9 (though it was terribly broken in parts), the last 3 Wizardry games (especially Wizardry 8), the Realms of Arkania series, and the Ultima Underworld games. Those are what come to mind off the top of my head, but that Ultima trilogy was the break through set of games for me.

Mine was Baldur’s Gate back on PC. I barely understood the systems at the time, but getting lost in the world, party banter, and making choices that actually mattered hooked me instantly.

Fallout 1, it was added to the magazine as a cover CD.

For me it was Lineage II. Spent an unhealthy amount of time grinding mobs, learning classes, and getting wrecked in PvP
That game basically set my expectations for RPGs going forward.
