Hi,
new to the pc world, my son (13) wants a gaming pc. we said we would try to build out own machine after watching a few builds on YouTube. this way, we can upgrade when needed and we would know what to do.
l have done A bit of research and it looks like the intel processors are the best for gaming, but I will happily be told otherwise.
im looking for advice on compatible parts and with a nice case and some fans that light up for him.

budget €1300-1500
purchase date will be after Christmas now
machine mostly for gaming
i have a monitor, it’s a QHD 144hz refresh rate, 2560x 1440
im in ireland, but can buy from uk also. Happy to buy from anywhere really, Amazon,eBay, I’m not used to newegg, do they ship from the US or eu also?
brand probably intel if they are the best for gaming but happy to go with the advice is here.
overclocking- I need to read up on what that is.
bling is essential, he like the lights. He has a rub keyboard and mouse already.
I just don’t want to buy the wrong parts.

hope this meets the rules,
thanks to anyone that replies.

Welcome to the forum :)

looking for advice on compatible parts
Use PCpartPicker.com—it'll protect you from choosing incompatible case, motherboard, CPU and RAM.

What kind of games? Big diff between say God of War and Solitaire.

im in ireland
Always glad to see the tone of the place upped.

One of our experts will be along soon with suggestions, so meantime take a load off and have a pint of Genius :)

PCPartPicker's Ireland region price data kinda sucks so I can't put together a reliable parts list for you. Why-Me's parts list is good, I will just add in some more generic recommendations in case you and your son want to do some research and shopping around yourself.

CPU: Going Intel, the i5-12400F is a good budget-conscious CPU for gaming. The 13600KF for example is significantly more money that I think would be better spent on a GPU.

Motherboard: I would go for an H670 or B660 chipset board if you go for the i5-12400F. Some things to keep in mind on a motherboard: do you want wifi? Does it have enough fan headers for what you want to do?

RAM: I would look for DDR4-3200 memory, which is pretty common. Keep in mind you'll need to enable XMP in the BIOS to take advantage of those higher memory speeds.

Storage: Go for an NVME SSD with at least 1TB capacity.

Power Supply:
750 or 850 watts is not going to be necessary for your system, but it's always nice to have power overhead, so I'd go for these higher wattages. Gold or Platinum certified is what you want and I would look for a semi or full modular unit to keep case clutter to a minimum. This list is by no means the total authority, but here's a general guide to PSUs by quality tier: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1446782-psu-tier-list-rev-860/

Case, fans, and CPU cooler: These are aesthetic preferences more than anything. Just be sure to choose a case that is compatible with your motherboard (don't get a full ATX board and a Micro ATX case for instance), and look for a case with good airflow. Also keep GPU dimensions in mind, because some of these suckers are biiig and you want to make sure it fits in your case.

GPU: The GPU should be the most expensive part of the build, and my advice is basically "get the best one you can after you buy all the other stuff." Something like an NVIDIA RTX 3070 or Radeon RX 6700 XT (or 6750 XT) will be good for 1440p gaming. A 6800 XT, 6900 XT, or 3080 would be even better but then we start climbing the price ladder quickly.

As you start putting a list together feel free to post it here and we can offer more specific feedback!

Thanks for the input. Stupid question, but is getting a larger ssd, better than getting a ssd and a hdd as I see there is no hdd in the parts.
Not a stupid question :)

I would not buy an HDD period. SSDs have come down enough in price, and are so superior in performance, that I'd avoid mechanical drives all together. Only use case for them is super high-capacity media storage or backups or similar.

I'd say get at least a 1TB NVME SSD for your main drive. If you want more storage you can either up the capacity on the NVME drive or you can add a SATA SSD. I am running a 1TB NVME SSD and a 500GB SATA SSD in my rig, partly because I had that 500GB drive leftover from a previous build, but that works fine for me.

Ok, perfect.
Also, once I get the motherboard that fits the intel chip, will I be able to upgrade chips later on and will I only be able to use intel ?

You'll only be able to use Intel CPUs since AMD uses a different socket. If you wanted to upgrade in the future, you would have the option of upgrading to any CPU compatible with your socket and chipset. If you get a B660 chipset board for instance, this is the list of currently compatible CPUs: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/218832/intel-b660-chipset/compatible.html

For what it's worth, I wouldn't worry toooo much about future upgradability when choosing a motherboard. Usually by the time you're ready to upgrade your CPU, there are newer generations out that use different boards anyway, but your mileage may vary so take that with a grain of salt.

And is eBay a bad place to buy computer parts or is it ok ?

It can be ok. It's a roll of the dice. I have purchased computer components on eBay that have served me well (I have a used eBay GTX 1070 that is still going strong), but you always run the risk of getting scammed or getting a bad component. If you are a savvy eBay consumer and if you find you can save a lot of money by buying used, you may choose to risk it.

A lot of used graphics cards you find on eBay may have been used in bitcoin mining rigs before being resold, which means there's a chance they've been running at full load 24/7 with who knows what cooling solution. Watch out for those.

Hi, just want a bit more advice on the i5 24000 vs 36000. I see some YouTube videos with comparison charts and the 36000 seems to always be quite high on ratings with games. Would the 24 vs 36 be much of an upgrade for gaming or is it not worth the extra and can the 36000 still be used in a b660 motherboard, seen an incompatible warning on pc partpicker.

Looking at these at the min, but would be happy to upgrade the i5 if it was worth it.

Sapphire Radeon RX6800 Pulse OC Gaming 16.0 GB OC

Enermax ETS-T50 AXE ARGB Black Edition

Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro Schwarz 32GB DDR4 GX4M2Z RAM multicoloured illumination

WD Blue SSD SN570 NVMe PCIe 3.0 M.2 2280 2TB

Seasonic G12 GM-750 Semi-Modular 80+ Gold 750 Watt

Intel Core i5-12400F

be quiet! Light Wings PWM High Speed 140mm, Triple-Set

GIGABYTE B660M GAMING X AX DDR4

He wanted a different case and the reviews on the be cool seemed good.
Still open to any other suggestions and what anyone thinks of the i5 from what I said above.

What case did he choose?

That case only has a single front intake fan tmk. I'd try to sell the kid on a Fractal Design Pop Air. Not only are they less expensive but they have better airflow .. front mesh panel with two front intake fans along with a rear exhaust fan (no extra case fans required). Those cases are fairly new to the market and have received decent reviews.

https://www.computeruniverse.net/en/search?query=Fractal Design Pop Air <--- find them there.

A better look at those cases. (plenty of colour choices)

Here's two examples to give you an idea.

Hi, I’m just waiting for computer universe to get back to me after asking them something.
I can push out the funds a bit more, is it worth going for a better chip and motherboard or would it not make much difference, ie 12600 or 13600 and appropriate board?
Thanks for all the input during the thread.

I would put the extra funds into something such as a headset, mouse, keyboard, etc ... The other alternative would be to wait until next week when the i5 /13400 / 13400F is released at the CES event.

Hi, the CES is over and I couldn’t see any other intel chip news but I have seen AMD have released new chips. Am I still better sticking with the 12400 or would I be better getting a different chip? Don’t mind spending a bit more if it’s worth it.
I also should have said at the start is like to to editphotos from time to time.
tia.
