Traditionally I am a shooter or hack and slash player, but I have been wanting to sink my teeth into an older, epic RPG...something without the main focus being guns; with magic and\or swordplay, something I can sink some REAL hours into. I don't want to buy anything new right now and I am steering away from Free to Play. I have the following in my backlog, I have never played any of these games. Cast your vote and let me know which one you would play and why, or what similar games you've enjoyed.
Looking to play something different than my usual genre. Suggestions for an RPG in my backlog.

I'm the 'played none' vote, altho I did try and bounce off Skyrim and Dishonored. The 2 our RPG Overlords here speak most highly of are Skyrim—especially if you fancy hundreds of mods—and Witcher 3.
When you return to the shooter side, check out Far Cry Primal—set 10,000 years ago, so no guns there either. Beautiful world even by Ubi standards, and lots of fun

Skyrim is special with all its mods. You can make it into lots of different things, but only IF you want to spend the time to do so.
Witcher 3 is the best RPG that I've ever played, though, so that's my vote. The combat is good, the graphics are nice, the music is excellent, and the stories are GREAT!
Oh, the graphics might be more than nice now, they did a big upgrade to them not long ago.

I'm not a big action RPG player. The only one in that list that I played was Witcher 3, and I loved it. I couldn't get into Skyrim or Dishonored.
Far Cry has really been an RPG since 4, though 6 got rid of most of the RPG elements. Not sure about Primal. Only played it a few minutes.

I liked Skyrim the most but I haven’t given much time to the Witcher. Also I played Skyrim when it was released so not too sure how it has aged but imagine it should still be enjoyable.
If you're looking to dive into something different and have an RPG in your backlog, I'd suggest giving "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" a try if you haven't already. It's renowned for its deep storytelling, expansive open world, and complex characters. The game offers a rich narrative experience with meaningful choices that affect the world around you. Plus, its side quests are as compelling as the main storyline, ensuring you'll have plenty of engaging content to explore outside your usual genre preferences.
About 60 hours into W3's original main story and side quests so far and its been fantastic - this game is exactly what I was looking for! So much different than something like Cyberpunk or Deus Ex (also great games) Such a great experience. This game could come out tomorrow for the very first time and it would still be better than most of the polished turds they call games these days (looking at you Starfield). It looks amazing, its optimized well, the story is great, gameplay mechanics and combat are solid... I mean, even the side quest stories are interesting and entertaining - So what that Troll ate those people, he's just doing what Trolls do - GET HIM HIS PAINT!

I am neither a shooter nor a combat gamer, so all of to listed games are unknown to me… (I‘ve heard of some of course, but I never player them.)
However, since the games are all in your your backlog, I would think that you wanted to play all of these games at some point, or you wouldn‘t have bought them. My advice is: Listen to your gutfeeling!
I am sure you had some expectations of the games when you acquired them, and I would choose the one that fits your current game wish the most.
Gaming is not about playing the one game that everyone thinks is the best. It is about your own experience and sometimes, blind trying out is the best approach to it.
Edit: Seems I have jumped the last entry to this thread… My bad! I am glad, though, that you had a great experience.

I narrowed the backlog from 40 to 6 candidates and really just couldn't commit to one. The poll made it easy for me to "make the jump".

Gamers speak from hundreds of hours of experience. 35+ years of gaming have taught me that if you walk into a game with a predefined expectation, you are almost always let down in some way and the game leaves a sour taste in your mouth because its not exactly what you wanted. The hype RARELY lives up - however its seems in the case of The Witcher 3...it holds, and holds damn well, even compared to current titles.
I honestly cant tell you how I got the Witcher 3, I started up my GOG launcher for the first time in a LONG time and it was in my library along with Ghostrunner, and Witcher 1: Directors Cut... no recollection of ever buying any of these games, let alone from GOG store, I just don't really shop there... However over the last few years I've basically stocked up on free games wherever I can find them, and added around 2-3 games to my backlog every time I can grab a game for around 15$, any my wife often slips a game into my Steam library as a gift.
I have been firmly stuck in the world of live service games for about 4 years now... looking forward to a change of pace and grinding through the whole backlog someday... if it ever stops growing

Try the Mass Effect trilogy. There is a remastered version that includes all dlc as well. You won´t be disapointed.
And Fallout 3 and 4, don´t bother Fallout 76, that´s boring. But 3 and 4 are really good games.
Divinity 2 and wasteland 3 are good if you like an isometric perspective.

I have played all the ME games at least 3 times over and then once again when I got the LE...it is my absolute favorite IP in gaming! My dogs are named Commander Shepard and Garrus! (no joke) - I haven't been through them in a while - but its one of those franchises I'll play over and over again. It will get another playthrough at 4k when I upgrade my display... Maybe if we are lucky will get blessed with a "enhanced edition" with RT and DLSS... But I don't see that or ME4 anywhere on the horizon (they don't even have a name for ME 4 yet and its been paused while they focus on the new Dragon Age which should get a release date announce this year)
I'm about 65 hours into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt now... Why have I never played this before?! Like, I want to read the books and play the first two games as well now!
Crazy thing is that as good as the main game is - I have heard the expansions are even better! I think Blood and Wine got an award or something, cant recall. Excellent suggestion all.... LOVING this game.

The battles require you to click at the CORRECT time, and clicking too fast will mess you up. The graphics are obviously quite old. It's also a bit ridiculous with the 'cards' thing, but whatever.
If you're going to play it, make sure you save off Witcher 3 when you go to Kaer Morhen. Then you can load it up again after playing through the opening of Witcher 1, which should be fun.

Witcher on Netflix is pretty good also, at least the first two seasons before Netflix decided to take a giant dumb on the IP.
I think you might be referring to the quest "Family Matters", most commonly called "The Bloody Baron". It won a Golden Joystick Award in 2015 and is for many gamers regarded as a fantastic quest, one of the better ones out there. It is on my top 10 favorite quests for sure.
In the second expansion (Blood&Wine), you get your villa and also a stable for Roarch in a completely new zone that looks great. It is a breath of fresh air since the new area is much more vibrant in color and more fairytale-looking than any other zone in Witcher 3.
close... Australian Shepard and Basenji! - Garrus was a full blood Beagle, he isn't with us anymore.. But if Archangel was a dog incarnate... it was G - nothing but trouble and destruction... we miss him lots

Dishonored and its sequel are my favourite games, but they're VERY different from the other games on your list. They are best thought of as stealth-adventure games, not as action-RPGs. You would like Dishonored if you like games like Deus Ex and Thief. I often describe it as a “lamppost-sitting simulator”. You spend a lot of time perched high up, watching guard patterns and planning the timing of your next move. If you want that kind of thoughtful, deliberate gameplay, you'll have a great time; if you want an all-action brawler, not so much.

Btw a very important Dragon Age lore tip: you need to play the DLCs, especially the following expansion of each game (links contain spoilers): DAO's Awakening; DA2's Legacy; and above all else, DAI's Trespasser. Bioware traditionally use the last expansion for each game as a vital lore bridge to the next instalment. When you play the next game everything will make a lot more sense if you've played the above-mentioned expansions, and they are often almost a full-sized new game in themselves. Trespasser is the pinnacle of this approach, a vast expansion whose plot is absolutely essential to the DAI experience.

Cool, thanks for the tip. I do have all the DLCs as they were included with the Utlimate Editions of the first 2 games, and GOTY edition of the last one. I'll make sure to play them.
I really wanted to like the Dishonored games, but found the settings too depressing—not a fan of vermin and squalor in my games. I call Far Cry 'tree-top' games since there's a lot of the same observational planning and tactical elimination required for undetected base captures.
Fwiw if you do a Clean Hands run there are far fewer rats! Join the light side.
Perhaps it's just that I already live in 21st century England and the country now looks like Dunwall all the time so I'm used to it.
I haven't played Any of those, but have enjoyed some good long hours of Elder Scrolls online. I imagine Elder Scrolls 5 would be a good bet.
While i voted for DAI, My favorite game of the the last 4 yeas is a little indy turn based gem called Dungeons of Naheulbuek. It's a fantastic party based Dungeon stomp that reminds me of the 80's dungeons and dragons cartoon art styling.
