Looking for ways to play my OLD games

Hello. I am looking to play my old Mac games from the 1990s. I am open to how they can work, whether it's an old Mac computer, and old PC lab top, or emulation. I have a few discs. Victor Vector and Yando: The Vampire's Coffin, Sim City Original and Links Pro. Games from the early to mid 1990s. Most of these games say that they are available on Mac 6.07 or higher or Windows 3.1 as well.

Obviously they don't work on the new computers anymore. I have a couple of PC friends. We tried to emulate through Sheep Shaver and UTM. But they didn't really understand how to do it, mostly because I have an Apple MacBook Air. They didn't understand how to match up the hardware.

Should I get a really old Macintosh Computer or should i get a new or old PC labtop?

I'm so anxious to play my old games. It just doesn't seem simple. And even when trying to get my computer friends to try to figure it out, they are a bit confused. And I am definitely not computer savvy. I'll do anything to play these games, even if it's thinking outside the box. Let me know if you have a practical idea.

A possible solution is perhaps finding the old DOS and windows copies and try and run them via dosbox. You could check exodos complete collection. Simcity 1 is certainly easy enough to find with a quick google. Another source is archive.org. a quick check and i was able to locate the windows iso for Victor Vector and Yando: The Vampire's Coffin for example.

But a mac emulator for windows? not seen anything yet, but checking online and sheepshaver UTM seem like the current options. Its probably easier to go the windows emulation route, theres a good chance every game that was on mac will be on pc.

Thanks. I'm sharing this with my friend. We tried the UTM but it seems like they took off the Mac emulator. That's what we seemed to find.

Also, is it easier to emulate on a PC labtop than a Macbook Air? Or do you think it's about the same?

Maybe have a look at https://infinitemac.org/. It allows you to run old Mac versions in your browser and they come with a bunch of games. From what I understand you can upload your own files as well, so it should be possible to get your games working as well if you can find the files for them.

Thanks. So I was actually able to play Sim City on Infinite Mac. But the problem is there is no sound.

I went to the Exosus site and downloaded the DOS box. But it keeps on saying illegal command. Do you know any videos that are for this particular situation? I'm gonna b showing all of this to my friend too but there's a lot of moving parts.

just to confirm you meant the following site for Dosbox? https://www.dosbox.com/

I would then have a look at the exodos next and yeah, you need to torrent to download or look elsewhere for individual files like archive.org

Honestly i say windows machine, all the games were made for PC but again i'm being bias and not really had any hand on MAC based emulating.

You could try SheepShaver or Basilisk II on your MacBook Air with the correct ROM and OS image, which often makes playing old 90s Mac games much easier than finding real vintage hardware. If emulation proves too tricky, picking up a used classic Macintosh or an older PC laptop (for the Windows 3.1 side) might be a more straightforward solution. Good luck!

My friend is trying right now to emulate. He’s saying that his understanding is exodos is for Dos but he’s having no luck Windows 3.1 games.

Do you know which PC lab tops would be compatible with these games? I would imagine there’s no Mac lab top that would be compatible.

pretty much any modern machine will manage to run dos games, the challenge is that some of them need to be tweaked to make them work. Not all the pc games were well made/optimized and required all sorts of changes to make them playable.

Any luck trying the Mac version of Dosbox and a decent front loader?

So my friend said he was able to get the game running on his desktop. But he says he doesn't know if there is a version available for my Macbook. Do I have to buy a gaming computer? He wants to build me one.

you can play windows games on Mac but I don't know enough about them to know how good yours is

what game is he playing? How new is it?
If your mac air can't run the game, you may need to agree to him making a new one.
