Let's Play--Nominate and Vote...(Experimental)

NOTE: This has nothing to do with videos. Maybe shouldn't have named it "let's play".

This probably won't work, but it was a lot of fun when several of us were playing BG3 at the same time and discussing it. So my suggestion is that we nominate games and vote on which ones we want to play. It's kind of like a book club for games.

We tried this once with DOS games, but that didn't really take off. It wouldn't hurt to try again though.

Do you have any suggestions for us to start with? I have a bunch of games I've been meaning to play, but I'll need to be at my PC to get the full list.

I was trying to think of decent free games, but I'll have to look through my library because my brain is broken.

Your Angband is free, right?

I was thinking people might have some older games, too, like Tyranny, Fallout 1 or 2, New Vegas, Morrowind.

Angband is free and open source, yes. It can be played in a browser at https://angband.live, where you also have a chat with other people playing so you can ask questions and, well, do the thing this thread was made for.

There are a quite a few games available for free, especially if you count all of the games given away by Epic.

I'll see if I can get a list of suggestions tomorrow if you or someone else hasn't already by then.

I made a list of games I personally would be interested in playing. It's not exhaustive of course, but it was getting pretty long already. I'll start with the free games:

Free games:

  • Moonring
  • Dwarf Fortress (it's been a while since the last time I played)
  • OpenTTD
  • Angband (or any of the many free roguelikes like it. Some even have graphics!)
  • Starcraft: Mass Recall (The entirety of the Starcraft and Starcraft: Broodwar campaigns remade in the Starcraft II engine, which can be downloaded for free)

(Recent) Epic Freebies:

  • Styx: Master of Shadow and Styx: Shards of Darkness
  • SKALD: Against the Black Priory
  • Cassette Beasts
  • Disco Elysium (I played until the end of the first in-game day a while back).
  • Hogwarts Legacy
  • Strange Horticulture

(Total conversion) mods:

  • Enderal: The Shards Of Order (Skyrim)
  • Falskaar (Skyrim)
  • Fallout: London (Fallout 4)
  • XCOM: The Long War
  • XCOM 2: The Long War 2/Long War of the Chosen
  • Regrowth (Minecraft)
  • Material Energy series (Minecraft)

My Steam favourites:

  • Crusader Kings III
  • Death Stranding
  • Fabledom
  • Jagged Alliance 3
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
  • Pentiment
  • Rimworld (I haven't played it since we got the BioTech DLC and I haven't seen much of Odyssey or Royalty).
  • Subnautica: Below Zero
  • V Rising
  • Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader
  • Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

I'm really up for anything. Out of that Steam Favorites list, Crusader Kings III, Pentiment, Subnautica Below Zero, The Witcher 3 (replay) and V Rising (replay) are on my to do list, but I'm not sure V Rising is very doable solo without doing a deep dive into the game settings, which of course is possible.

Phantom Pain was fun stuff with a lot of weirdness. It has a whole lot of hidden mechanicNO NOO NO NO.... <ahem> Excuse me. Some ancient spirit took over my fingers there for a few seconds. Anyway, it's a good one. I even liked the ending, though most people didn't.

Submitted for your approval...

Just Cause 3, currently on sale for super cheap. Lots of crazy, over-the-top action. The reason I think it might fit extra well are the challenges. When you finish a challenge, your best score is recorded, so your Steam friends can do their challenge and see your recording going. It's not direct multi-player, more like multiplayer at your convenience. (I tried to pop in to record one, but it's been 9 years. I guess they don't keep recordings for that long.)

EDIT: Oh, I can still see the recordings, I was just doing it wrong!

@Zed Clampet Would you be okay with either Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain or Just Cause 3? I own both. I personally lean toward Metal Gear Solid V because I have played Just Cause before, but either is fine with me.

I don't actually have Phantom Pain. It's only $19.99, though. I'll give it a shot, but it's mostly stealth, which isn't my thing. Maybe I could learn to do it. I do have Just Cause 3, and it looks fun. Wouldn't mind playing Enderal:Forgotten Stories.
