So I am currently in the midst of trying to buy a gaming laptop and for my budget I have roughly narrowed down a few, however I am having some trouble in which laptop to choose between them.

My old laptop has a ryzen 5 3550h with gtx1650 and is quite old now, and from what I can usually see, I think I am cpu limited and havent really seen the gpu go more than 40 to 60% usage, while cpu is 80 to 90%. So I am not particularly sure if I am CPU limited but it feels like it.

I mostly use my laptop for app/website/VR development along with running ML models with some gaming on the side. Based on this, which laptop do I pick? These are some of the options that I had considered

1.HP Victus Gaming Laptop, AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS AI Powered, 6GB RTX 4050 GPU,15.6-inch (39.6 cm),FHD, IPS,144Hz,16GB DDR5,1TB SSD, 300 nits, Win 11,Backlit KB, DTS:X Ultra (MSO, Blue, 2.29 kg), fb2117AX

2.Lenovo LOQ 2024, AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS, NVIDIA RTX 4060-8GB, 24GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 15.6"/39.6cm, Windows 11, MS Office Home 2024, Grey, 2.4Kg, 83JC00EHIN, 100% sRGB, 3 Mon. Game Pass Gaming Laptop

3.HP Victus Windows 11 Home Gaming Laptop,AMD Ryzen 7 7840Hs Ai Powered,6Gb RTX 3050 Gpu,16.1-Inch (40.9 Cm),95W Tgp,Fhd,IPS,144Hz,16Gb Ddr5,1Tb Ssd,RGB Backlit Kb,B&O (Mso,Blue,2.29 Kg),S0089Ax

4.Acer Nitro V 15, AMD Ryzen 7-7735HS Octa-core,NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050-6 GB GDDR6, 16GB DDR5, 512GB SSD,15.6"/39.6cm IPS FHD, 144Hz, Windows 11 Home, Obsidian Black, 2.1KG, ANV15-41 Gaming Laptop

5.ASUS TUF Gaming A15, AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS, 15.6-inch FHD 144Hz, Gaming Laptop (16GB/512GB SSD/NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050/Windows 11/90WHr/Mecha Gray/2.2 Kg), FA507NUR-LP082W

I am also open to other suggestions within a similar price range.

Sorry no one answered this. Get the second one with the 4060 and the 24 GB of RAM. For what you are wanting to do, those will beat the rest of them. The only problem I see with it is that the drive is very small, so you won't be able to keep as much stuff on it, but as long as you keep it fairly clean it should be okay.

Thanks! so even if my current system is cpu limited, at the level of ryzen 7 7435hs vs ryzen 7 8845hs the difference is not quite as much and the cpu wont be the bottleneck for my work? the main ones I am considering is between those two, the first and the second one. But yeah the ram being higher is great, altho I am not sure if it is expandable or not, granted i think the 24gb ram should be enough, at my highest usage i do end up taking 95% of my current 24gb ram, but that is a ddr3 ram i think

Hey sorry, I forget to check that other forums.

It's worth considering that the 7735HS doesn't have integrated graphics, which means you're likely to see lower battery times, if that's important to you.

If you're really interested in gaming on the side, why pick a gaming laptop over something like a workstation? I'm fairly ignorant here, as I don't do any development work, so just asking.

Also, generally, I think it's a good idea to buy as much laptop/speed as is in your budget when you're buying, because you can't touch any of that as the machine ages.

First of all, you should always be plugged in while doing VR development on your laptop. When you aren't plugged in, the laptop doesn't send sufficient power to the CPU because it's trying to conserve your battery. You probably know that, but I wanted to put that out there just in case.

How much RAM do you have in your current laptop, 16? That can cause problems these days with a lot of software. Not playing games, though. Also, if you are doing game development and moving around in a 3D environment, that 1650 could be a problem as well. The bottom line, though, is that anything on that laptop could be a bottleneck and you are always going to be bottlenecked with either the CPU or the GPU or possibly the RAM. Are you looking at a meter that shows CPU and GPU and RAM use while you work?

Both of those CPUs are vastly better than the one you are currently using. Will you ever be limited by your CPU during VR development? I can't guarantee that you'll never be CPU limited, but you should be significantly better off than you are now, and there's a real chance that the first one in your list would be GPU limited fairly quickly if you are trying to move around in a busy 3D environment. The XX50 models, while they have improved, are just not great.

The 8845 is a decent bit faster and if you can find a laptop in your budget that has both the 8845 and the 4060, you would be better off. My initial thought was that both CPUs are very good and shouldn't be much of a problem. But the 4050 is not a very good GPU.

Sorry if this is hard to read. I'm kind of late for something and going fast. Bottom line is that both of those CPUs are good for laptop CPUs, but if you are still worried about it, let me know what program you are using and about your project and I'll check it out some more.
