Gaming History Question - First games integrating external content - 1999-2001

I'm trying to remember a game I played back in '99-'01 where there would be content in the game from an outside source, like email or chat or even a link to buy something. Sound familiar to anyone?

Actually that sounds familiar but like every-one else I can't remember any details - I didn't buy it.
