Which laptop will play the MOST CD Rom games?

I bought a Dell Laptop Windows 98 SE. It plays Sim City. But the problem is that it doesn't play the Quake game I bought and several other such as Carmen Sandiego or Links 386 Pro. I was a bit surprised.

I'm getting into retro computer games. And I am definitely using the sites that emulate the games. But as a hobbyist and purist, I'm interested in playing them raw, in their original state, if POSSIBLE. There's just nothing like it. It's complicated though.

I grew up with a Macintosh computer. It played a handful of games but I don't think it would ever play Doom or Quake originals. It played MYST, which was cool. But is there a PC labtop that will play all of the old mac games plus lets say every game or almost every other game before the year 2000? I'm looking for something that will be pretty universal in the retro arena. What's the best all around retro machine that plays most CD Roms?

I don't know if you will find a laptop, you may find that you need to make a Desktop PC instead to play the games. Its possibly more likely to find working parts that way than a laptop that still works fine after 30 years. Might be easier to match up what ever hardware games require too.
