What stops you buying a game even if its a must have game.

1. pre order or main releases with 2 different versions eg standard and deluxe plus dlc's all released on same day.

2. i am fortunate enough to be able to afford any game but price will sometimes make me say no.

3. i google how long to complete xyz and if its something like 12 hours or less and cost is say £35 then its a no cos i will do it in 3 days.

4. any game with cartoony type characters such as guild wars 2.

5. no key bind option .... yes their are still some new stuff that you cant change keys.

6. huge number of keys to use , they remind me of early 1980's games where you had to put an overlay card on the keys . I recently got construction sim but the number of keys made me refund.

Considering the number of things i listed i guess thats why i have spent almost 4 years hammering satisfactory ... when i do find something that hits the sweat stop i just go for it.

Please say which of the 6 you agree with.

1'ish as I try to avoid games that introduce cut content into expensive packaging. It's a greedy and completely unnecessary middle finger to the consumer. Number 3 kind of depends on how good the game is and what genre. Abzu I remember being fast to complete but it was also a very beautiful game with it's own unique style which was well worth whatever I paid for it. Come to think of it, I didn't pay anything as it was free on Epic Games😅

3 & 6, with maybe 4.

3 even if longer, cost is a major consideration for me, can rarely justify any double-figure outlay on a game.

4 depends, if game is otherwise compelling, cartoony won't put me off.

6 yeah not a fan of a lot of required keys—soft limit ~10.

Main things which put me off buying:
3rd Person
Alt-Tab not working
Boss fights long
Closed World
Driving
Fast Paced
Genre mixing
Melee focus
On/Off options missing
QTE
Save game crippled
Skin/Loot each kill
Squad
Unskippable Intro/Cut

Unfinished is a big one. I want all the bug fixing finished, all community patches in place, DLC stopped dribbling, final version mods in place.

I am not fortunate enough to be able to afford any game, but even if I was I probably wouldn't buy any game at full price. If I want to play a new game, I just pick one of the many games in my libraries I haven't played yet. And even if none of those satisfy the particular type of game I'm looking for, there are a ton of older games I haven't played yet that I can buy for less than 10 bucks.

Not many games are must haves for me so if one does actually show up I want to play, there is very little that will stop me buying it.

Means I can watch all the train wrecks and not be concerned. I find that entertaining, and its free.

So not a Ubisoft game then where you get 4 choices and last one is a trap? Could be worse, special editions of games where you have to buy it about 3 times to get all the characters... I think I prefer 2 versions to that alternative.

Most of the time the deluxe version has more in it. It can depend what you get in the more expensive pack. Also depends what price difference is. If its only $20 or so and adds a lot to game, why not.

I mostly buy Indie games so there aren't many that offer DLC. Last Epoch has free dlc for everyone... no need to pay more.

Not sure I pay for season passes before buying game, as what if you don't like it? Only ever had it in one game so far.

i am fortunate enough to be able to afford any game but price will sometimes make me say no.
That is case with almost all AAA games for me, but as I said, not a lot of games are must haves for me. So I may pay it if I really want it. One a year or so is probably okay.

ARPG can have both of these but for most part I will persevere as so few of them come out every few years that I actually might play. Some of them change the keys around enough it takes me a few days to adjust...
Last Epoch changed a key I normally have tied to an attack to my heal potions. Took ages to not tap that button a few times and drink all of them just before a fight... not helpful to be out of potions at start of a boss fight.
I probably could have changed it but I don't mind learning new keys. I don't expect every game to have same layout. They never did in the past. People get to used to same things. And complain if its different... waaaaaa is all I hear.

Right there with you! If were talking about "must have" games that i only "must have". This is literally the only thing that would stop me from buying it, at least right away.

In choosing one of those 6? 2 i guess but its never that i cant throw somethin on a credit card or have in my bank account. Im not broke, Its whether or not that money can be used there instead of some other place id rather not spend it lol.

None of the others dissuade me from buying a must have game. They come into consideration no doubt, but ultimately, if its a must have game for me, it comes down to whether or not i have the 70,90,100 right there to spend. Fortunately, im able to try most of these must have games before i buy them full price if im so inclined to play and cant wait.

If its a must have game in general, if its not within a genre that i find myself not liking at all or play very little of, thats the biggest deciding factor then along with whether or not i have money.

price.

its always the price of the game. I buy nothing at full RRP and i will perfectly wait let the dust settle and take a look at a game. i have vast gaming catalogue. the let the less patient be the testers for a new game. I'll wait for reviews and everything to be released before i strike. GOTY editions for the win.

2, 3 and 5 are my main issues, especially the price to gameplay ratio. I’ve said before I typically use a $1=30mins-1hour gameplay ratio to help determine if I’ll get my moneys worth from a game. If I spend $60 on a game, I better be able to play for at minimum 30 hours before getting bored. I rarely ever buy games over $30 these days, so that ratio is easier to work with when you don’t spend so much money. It’s not perfect by any means, I’ve spend $20 on a game and felt I got my value out of it after only playing for a handful of hours, but especially with bigger purchases I want to make sure I’m not wasting money. I am fortunate enough as well to buy any game I want, but I still want my moneys worth. $60-70 for a brand new game is still a big wad of cash no matter how much you have in the bank.

For 6, I’ve been lucky to not run into this issue very often, but I do remember refunding a game when I wasn’t able to rebind controls, can’t remember what game though.

Also slightly related, I like games that give the option to use a keyboard or controller whenever you want. There are times I want to use one or the other, so a game that lets you switch seamlessly between the different input types is a big bonus for me, but not a deciding factor for my purchase. Games that don’t instantly recognize when you switch between the two really annoys me, although it’s just a minor inconvenience. I have that issue with Two Point Campus, after playing a different game with a controller, going to TPC it doesn’t recognize keyboard inputs if the controller is connected. I have rechargeable batteries on my Xbox controllers that are kind of difficult to take out so I have to pry them out to turn the controller off each time I wanna play TPC with m+kb.

1.I dont care if theres a more expensive premium version, its almost always just some cosmetics or maybe some gear. I guess if there was actual game content missing Id be annoyed, but Ive never seen that in anything Ive been interested in.

2.If its a must have at release game, then I'll buy it. Not too many games that ever fall into that category for me, so usually get stuff on sale later if its the full 60 or 70 for a AAA. If its a smaller budget game 30 or under then I'll sometimes just take a punt if the buzz is good and it sounds like my kind of thing.

3.Time to beat has never been a factor for me. I'd rather have an excellent 10 hours for 60 then a mediocre 100 hours for 30.

4.If I dont like something about a games art style, then its automatically not a must buy.

5.I rarely change key binds for anything, I adjust game by game. I understand why people find that annoying though.

6. In my experience most games let you use the mouse for almost everything, and shortcuts are something learned more over time if I play a lot of a game.

I missed this one. Nope, not an issue. In fact, Journey takes max of 2 hours to finish a play through but I wouldn't have missed it for world... just because game is over doesn't mean you can't play again. I played it so many times I cannot give you a number.
A game that takes a long time to finish can just be full of busy work. Sizes of game/world doesn't mean anything to indicate if its fun or not, or worth playing. You can have a massive game with very little in it.

I expect to pay $1/hr or less but, if it's a game that is really intensely good (which it would have to be to be 'must play') then I'll make an exception.

The thing that's mostly going to stop me is the number of hours in a day. Even if two games are "must play," I can only play one at a time. If there are ten, I'm going to have to up my standards for what 'must play' means. Genre fatigue can mess around in there, too. I like RPGs the best, but I don't want to play only RPGs all the time.

P.S. How Long to Beat typically says a game takes about half as long as it takes me to beat it. I don't know what those crazy speed demons are doing. Stop and take a screenshot of the flowers! ;)

The one I did not see on your list is Controller support, which I use, I started playing Xbox 360, Xbox One X then moved to my first PC in March 2020 to begin modding some games.
But my first game played was Pong in 1972.
I will say that I was one of the many to Pre-Order Starfield for $100.00 usd, what a waste, never before, never after.

I have avoided buying games that I really want because of several reasons.

Poor support from the developers
First person. I prefer third person view. There are only a handful of first person games I like.
No gamepad support. I prefer playing certain games with a gamepad.
No English language voice support.
Multiplayer focus.

Honestly for me I'm at a point where I'm all gamed out. I play a game and it's just the same crap over and over and over. Nothing new, nothing great, nothing really original. I might as well just replay old games. Then there's the prices..... yeah no. I've been getting back into art and music since I broke up with my fiancee and then my dad dying and things just falling apart so I'd rather just put my money into something I'm getting more enjoyment out of and have never gotten bored of in my lifetime of doing it, but over the past 2 years gaming has just died for me. I just play the old games now cause why drop even 40 dollars on a game I'll probably get bored of after 2 hours if that.

For me it's price versus amount of time played. For instance if a game costs £49.99 and I won't get at least 50 hours out of it then I won't immediately buy it.

If it's a game that I actually really want to play then I put it on my isthereanydeal wish list at a much lower sale price.

Not being able to rebind keys is annoying but I have a Logitech G502 mouse where I can create a game profile and bind buttons to certain keys.
