What are you playing this weekend? (Sept 18/19)

Thought a weekend gaming thread might be fun.

I have no responsibilities around the house/yard because I'm getting ready to have spine surgery and can't really do anything, so I'll be gaming non-stop all weekend except for a few hours on Saturday when I'll be watching my favorite college football (American) team.

I play a ton of different games during a week. The list of things I'm currently playing is pretty long, but this weekend I'm going to concentrate on three games I just picked up: Voidtrain, Lake, and SimCasino.

Voidtrain is a survival game where your base is a train traveling through the void. There's a ton of resource gathering, but I find it enjoyable because of some of the tools they give you. Plus there are enemies you have to watch out for, such as void sharks. The story is a bit confusing. I wasn't really paying attention during the beginning because someone was talking to me, but there are Nazis you have to deal with as well. Crafting is pretty fun. You start off with a trolley and have to work your way up to a few different types of trains and train cars. It's in EA, so I'm not sure there's a point to the game yet.

Lake is sort of a "slice of life" game. You go to this small down and work as a mail delivery person. As you deliver mail, you meet the residents and hear their stories. Not much to it, but it's a pleasant experience

SimCasino is what it sounds like. You design, build and maintain a hotel/casino. It's also in EA.

So what are you all playing?

There was a 'what are you playing' thread somewhere, but IIRC it may have been locked because it was attracting a lot of bots. But its a nice idea to start another!

So far this weekend Ive played a couple of hours of Deaths Door. Its a top down adventure game in the style of Legend of Zelda with lovely relaxing music and a cute art style. It has some basic level up mechanics for improving speed, attack speed, movement speed and magic damage. Also has several weapons which handle slightly differently mostly just fast/light or slow heavy damage far as I can tell. Recommend it if you're into that kind of thing.

I've dipped into High Fleet for a couple of hours. It has a unique Steam Punk style and is obtuse with its interface in a way that I like. Seems like a game you have to learn.

You command a fleet of rocket powered airships in a military campaign, moving from city to city. the encounters are action based and feel great, you control ship movement on a 2d screen with mouse/keyboard. You have to manage engine heat and weapons as you burst the engines to evade enemy fire while trying to time your shots at the same time to hit the enemy. In between you repair and buy fuel and upgrades for your ships at cities and deal with some choose your own adventure style interactions.

I haven't got that far in it yet, but I love it so far.

I also played a little Frost Punk, which is still a great game.

As it's one weekend, it can be locked on Sunday night! Not a bad idea!

I should be able to finish Watch Dogs 3, I think. I've been neglecting the main story and collecting way more operatives than I'm likely to need, but it's time to put an end to Albion (again) and get to the next game.

MechWarrior 5 is on hold - there's a big, free patch coming in a week or two. I'll likely let that show up, let the modders catch up to what changes it makes, then continue. Maybe.

X4 Foundations has released patch 4.1, so there's plenty to do there.

I should be getting close to finishing my annual playthru of the timeless Royal Envoy series. It's a strategy-puzzle series of 4 games, which I've mentioned here before, so I won't get into it now—I'll try for a decent write-up when I finish.

I'll likely play a couple of half-hours of PC Building Simulator. It's a bit samey, so not a game I can put hours into at a time—but fun for regular short dip-ins. It would probably be more interesting for someone who hasn't built a PC before.

It's very probable I'll start on Cepheus Protocol this weekend, I got it this week in our game keys giveaway thread. A video of it I watched immediately gave me Command and Conquer Generals vibes, something I definitely can't ignore!

Nope, still open—and this thread is only for this weekend.

@ZedClampet Good luck getting your spine removed—you weren't using it anyway, were you? Soon it'll all be behind you.

I'll see myself out…

I'm still playing Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning and hope to finish it by next Thursday (9/23), as I believe that's when the Diablo 2 remaster releases. While I don't like the idea that they strapped that "online only" requirement to it even if I'm just playing the single player portion only, I'll just have to live with it. I really want to see if I get that same feeling I had when playing the original all those years ago.

As far as KoARR goes, I really love the combat which can be fast paced and hectic, but not oppressively so, and the skills and ability trees are very well done. The main story line is interesting, not great, but decent enough to keep me moving forward, and the main quests & faction quests can be quite interesting with sometimes having 2 ways to complete them. It's not an overly complex game (or story), and the NPC interaction is pretty bland, but overall, it's a goo experience.

But I'm also nearing that wall, you know the one with the graffiti on it that says; " You have reached the end of your endurance for this game, and need to move on to something else". I haven't hit it yet, but I can faintly see it on the far horizon. Steam list's me as having spent 243.3 hours so far.

I've never been good at switching between different games over a short period of time. When I've tried it in the past, I usually end up never going back to a game, and leave this string of partially played, never completed games in my wake. I've done it, and quit some games for various reasons, but I'd rather spend hours (sometimes in the hundreds of hours) and see a game through to the end. I'm weird like that.

@ZedClampet - I hope your spine surgery goes well. I always hated that moment that those masked faces are staring down, telling me to relax, then zap away my consciousness. Nothing to worry about, I've just watched too many horror movies in my life.

I'll be continuing my playthrough of Days Gone this weekend. I'm about 8 hours in or so and I'm pleasantly surprised by it. It is a great looking game with excellent atmosphere. I just find it to be a really believable world and it has been quite immersive. I've also been playing Tales from the Borderlands on the side as well, so I may continue that a bit as well. It is fantastic so far.

I hear that, got a load of 'em. Even this summer, I've parked Ghost Recon Wildlands & Sniper Elite 4 for some reason I can't even remember now—maybe big game burnout. But I'll get back to them. Now don't look at me like that, I really will, I pinkie swear!

I'm weird like that
Good stuff! I keep telling people weird is so underrated—but they keep looking at me as if I'm…

We're past the weekend now so I'm a little late, but I'm currently making a concerted effort to finish the main quest of Skyrim so I can finally check out Solstheim. I've had the Special Edition burning a hole in my steam library for years now, and with the Ordinator perk overhaul mod I'm really enjoying nutting out a more unique build than the normal system allows.

This all does nothing to address the vast quantity of unfinished games I still own, but I'm trying to ignore the guilt and pour all of that negative energy into being as much of a dick as the limited RP'ing of Skyrim allows. There are a lot of quest givers finding themselves decapitated once they outlive their usefulness.

DOTA 2 is enough, but sometimes RDR 2

Also a bit late, but I played a bit of Crying Suns. It had been a while, but I had last stopped at a boss battle and the exposition that followed after defeating it got me right back into the story, which is really well written. I'm just suffering from a complete lack of drones in the new run which has made the battles a bit of a slog to get through. It doesn't help that most enemies in this sector use a weapon that gives one of their squadrons 4 seconds of invulnerability.

The Orinator-Perks of Skyrim is a great mod, I never play without it anymore. The skill trees are much better than the originals, so many ways to build your character.
Ordinator - Perks of Skyrim at Skyrim Special Edition Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com)

In the original Red Alert, Soviets had a superweapon called the Iron Curtain which was area-of-effect and could make a bunch of tanks invulnerable for a long time. It might be only 30-45 seconds, but whatever it was, it was too long—a real PITA to play against!

Forget static defenses, they got quickly shredded. Tactic was to engage far forward with fast units, then retreat so the effect had worn off by the time they reached your important stuff. Of course, best was to find the Iron Curtain location and sacrifice a few bombers—or their fighter escorts.

ETA:

I got a bit mixed up—no surprise, but it's been a while—there were 2 versions of the IC:
In RA1 it made only one unit invulnerable, for 45 seconds.

In RA2, IC2 makes "vehicles/buildings in a 3x3 area invulnerable for 50 seconds".

This game always intrigued me. Is it an RPG with a deep story or more of an action RPG? I keep reading about how people love this game, but people also love skyrim and that game bores me to tears.

I love deep stories, is this for me or am i better off with say Divinity OS?

KoARR is at it's heart an action RPG. I love the combat, and the skill trees allow you to try a variety of builds. The main story line is fairy interesting, if a bit generic, and while the voice acting is okay, there's really no character/npc interaction; there's conversations, but no real emotion in facial expressions. I'm finding it fun to play, but more for the combat than the story. So if you're looking for a deep story RPG experience, you would probably be disappointed. Either of the Divinity OS games, particularly the 2nd one, have much deeper stories and character interaction.
