What are auto battlers?

Title Kind of says it all, but I've seen this name tossed around and I have no clue what kind of games they are supposed to be. Lots of new genera seam to pop up lately and a few I get, though I didn't realize "cozy" is actually a genera, but apparently is. Another I'm kind of clueless on outside of people calling stardew that. Boomer shooter is another, bur seeing i atleast know it's am fps makes me care little about it. Rouge lite is another that doesn't really tell me much bit gets tagged all the time.

But back to topic, what the heck is autobattler?

They seem to be games where you pick a team of characters who do the fighting for you, automatically... you have no direct input apart from who to pick at the start of the round

Many of them seem to be based on chess

Auto Chess got quite big a few years ago, that was the first Id heard of it.

I bought Mechabellum a while ago, but it didnt really pull me in.

I saw that, I like mechs but was totally unsure of the gameplay. Their forums were completely unhelpful.


Can you tell me a little more about it?

I only really played the tutorial levels but I'll try. There didnt seem to be a campaign as such only scenarios, which was disappointing to me. It seems to be focused more on online vs games, maybe.

From what I could tell, its rock paper scissors with some units hard countering others. You get a certain number of points to spend on units which you can place with control zones on the map, mostly just straight opposite one another on the ones I tried. The only control you have is over what units you pick for the battle and where you place them on the field, some units are able to be placed at the side or flanks. The battle plays fully automatically out until one or the other team destroy the opponents main base buildings. Somehow you unlock higher tier units as the game goes on, not sure didnt play it enough.

I saw Loop Hero was being called an autobattler too, which I guess fits because the titular hero automatically runs through the titular loop and fights any monsters they encounter without any input from the player. You're just (indirectly) putting the monsters there so the hero can get strong enough to beat the final boss.

Thanks for the info, while the play sounds of, perhaps a bit like age of empires 2, that game is rps, and if you just click to attack it's auto.

No campaign makes it a solid no, so you were very helpful
