Question Stuttering with Doom The Dark Ages

Hello, my pc is:

Cpu: I7-13700Kf
Gpu: rtx 4080 super
Ram: 32gb DDR5 6400
Psu: Corsair RMx SHIFT RM1200x 80+ Gold
Motherboard: Asus Z790-A Wifi

The game with DLSS/FG is running fine for me in terms of frame rate, but at the beginning of the second level, just as I'm walking toward the capsule containing the shield, I get a noticeable stutter.

Is this happening to anyone else? Is it normal?

I recorded the issue using the hardware monitoring that comes with the game, but it won't let me add the url to this post.

Thanks.

wonder if this is op

I get stuttering just before getting the shield, at the beginning of the second level, exactly a few steps before reaching the capsule that falls from the sky with the shield. If I go back and return to the capsule, I get that stuttering again.

Is this happening to anyone else? I'm playing on Game Pass, not Steam.
Thanks.

otherwise, it could be the capsule.

He asking all over the place... I can show the video link
All the other videos I can find of the start of level 2 have the capsule already on the ground. Only his shows it falling as he approaches it. One I could understand but other shows the video before and it was landed before he got to it.

its only a small stutter, if it didn't happen everytime he approached it I could call it intentional.

if you on game pass, have you tried to verify game files to make sure its okay?
open xbox app
right click game
select manage
go to files and click Verify and Repair

its not a common problem. I don't find anyone else with it.
Updated GPU drivers?

I even reinstalled Windows, so it's not due to a poorly installed game or anything like that. The video drivers, BIOS, etc., are all up to date.

If it were a bug, there would be more people having the same problem.

that sounds like a hardware problem of some kind. Generally, if it survives a windows install its hardware...
when you reinstalled windows, did you wipe drive and start again or just do a reset? Reason I ask is resets keep the drivers, clean makes you start from scratch.

No other odd things in any other games? Anything?

Was it that much of a problem to cause you to clean install windows?

what are full specs of the PC?
what else is plugged into PC? Maybe its caused by mouse or something... I have had/seen some weird answers to questions.

Three videos now, all show the capsule is already down before they approach it... whereas yours shows the capsule is already showing and then comes down on top. Looks like a bug of sorts.

I wonder if they patched it or something

maybe its your save file? Since Game pass save files are saved on your PC and on the Cloud. Maybe its just your file. Shame you can't start again without deleting progress.

This removes saves on PC and cloud.

  • navigate to the game within the Xbox app,
  • go to its Manage game options,
  • select Saved data,
  • and then choose the Delete Everywhere option

I've also noticed stuttering in some games, but I don't think it happens in all of them, so I'm not sure if it's a general issue or not.

I performed a clean install of the operating system.

I tried a new game, and the same thing happens. I've noticed that sometimes the capsule is at the bottom, and other times it falls while I'm walking. Once it's at the bottom, the stuttering is smaller, but it doesn't go away either.

The rest of my PC peripherals are a keyboard (USB) and a Logitech wireless mouse and headset.
The monitor is a Samsung G8 OLED.

maybe try to play that part of the game with headset unplugged, just see if it makes any difference. I would suggest other two as well, but I expect its hard to play game like that unless you use a controller. I expect the wireless mouse uses a dongle, hypothetically it could cause the problem... it could be anything

USB and GPU all use the same chip on Motherboard to communicate with CPU, so if anything is slow to respond, it can causes other things to play up. I have had speakers and a mouse cause problems in the past, so I don't overlook anything now... or try not to.

I don't know if it could even be the cable you attach monitor with. Though I have my doubts

I don't have the game so I don't know what normal behaviour of the capsule should be... i just have a few videos to go from.

I've tried disconnecting the keyboard, mouse, and headphones (using a different mouse and keyboard) and the same thing happens.

I also tried using a different monitor and cable, and the same thing happens.

No one has the exact same lag at that exact moment, so it doesn't seem to be normal behavior in this game.

I'm worried it's CPU degradation since it's a 13th-gen Intel. Is there any way to check for that?

There isn't really a way to test for that.

test for CPU degradation, run stress tests using software like Prime95 or Black Myth Wukong demo and monitor for signs of instability, overheating, or performance issues, which could indicate a failing CPU.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • Signs of CPU Degradation:
    • Frequent Overheating: A CPU that consistently runs hotter than usual or shuts down due to overheating is a major sign of degradation.

    • System Instability and Crashes: If your computer crashes frequently, especially during demanding tasks, it could indicate a failing CPU.

    • Sluggish Performance: Noticeable slowdowns or lag, even with relatively light workloads, can point to CPU issues.

    • Error Messages or Blue Screens: Error messages or blue screens of death (BSOD) can be a sign of a failing CPU or other hardware problems.

    • Unusual Noises or Burning Smell: Loud fan noises or a burning smell emanating from the computer can indicate a serious problem, including a failing CPU.

    • Constant High CPU Usage: If your CPU is constantly running at 100% usage, even when idle, it could be a sign of a problem.

    • Compatibility Issues: If you encounter compatibility issues with new software or hardware, it could be related to a failing CPU.
    • Stress Testing: Use software like Prime95 with small FFTs or the Black Myth Wukong demo to put your CPU under heavy load.

    • Monitor Temperatures: Use tools like HWiNFO64 to monitor CPU temperatures during stress tests.

    • Check for Instability: If the system crashes, freezes, or displays artifacts during stress tests, it could indicate a failing CPU.

    • Compare Before and After: After running stress tests, compare the results with previous benchmarks to see if there have been any performance drops.

Do you have any of the other symptoms associated with the problem?

can try running prime95 for two hours and see how you go.

Can you borrow another GPU and try that? As it could be the gpu as well. Just a thought.

not sure if this tell you anything

A few months ago, I experienced blue screens whenever I played a specific game (Skyrim, although it also happened with Portal) after disabling and re-enabling gsync. I filed a warranty claim and MSI said everything was fine. Some time later, after updating both Windows 11 and the Nvidia driver (several versions later), I was no longer able to reproduce the issue. I don't know if this had anything to do with it.

I do experience stuttering sometimes (smaller than the ones shown in the video) but I'm not sure if it happens in all games or not, I'm not sure if it's game-specific or hardware-specific behavior.

The Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool test completed without errors.

I don't like Prime95. I've heard it's even harmful/dangerous to hardware. Could I use another one instead?

I don't have another GPU on hand, unless I buy another one and return it.

The intel tool is generally a good alternative to prime on intel systems.. so perhaps you okay.. if you not getting any of the other symptoms of the degradation, maybe you okay.

Nvidia drivers aren't perfect so its possible the updated ones fixed the problem you were having. Driver updates are the least painful way to resolve BSOD.

if its the only game you have problems in, I don't know if I would really try to fix it. Does it effect the game in any other way than the small stutter? Does it effect combat at all?
