steam wants your bank details

Steam now require you to add your credit card details if you want to buy a game they class as mature.
Their is one game i am thinking of buying and i have been checking the discussions page as it has a lot of bug reports and some players seem to think the devs have abandoned it.
Now that steam have changed things you can look at discussions unless you give them your credit card details.

I have mixed views on this because YES we need to stop youngsters looking at certain things and the NO in me says what if steam gets hacked .... i dont think i am over reacting when i say that because over here in england their have recently been a lot of high profile stores getting hacked

Footnote .... if you already own some games with mature content you can play them without adding your credit card details.

Not sure what youre saying. I always have to put in credit card details when i buy any game on steam mainly because i dont save my information. Are you saying you have to now? I dont save mine for hacking reasons. If my steam acct gets hacked, theres no card info on it.

See

Tl;dr: you need to save your credit card details if you want to see mature games in the UK.

i never save my details in steam i leave the box unticked just in case .....

Ok i will give you an example of something to try ......

type carnal instinct into steams search box and you will see the new conditions , you cant even look at the discussions pages till you do that.

the new conditions have only recently been added
I can get to the discussions and check them out for you. Is there something you need to know? I glanced through it and people are complaining that they conversion to UE5 is taking too long, but you can still play the UE4 version, which right now has more content, but that version of the game isn't being updated anymore as they continue to convert everything to UE5. It's been 3 months since the last update and some are getting concerned that the dev has abandoned it, but I can't find any evidence to support that.

You know that is the dumbest thing solutions i've ever heard. How many 12 year olds or younger have their own credit card? They use their parents credit cards to buy games and guess what the are well over 18, so i guess its fine.

Id ask if politicians are really this stupid, but i already know the answer.

Not to mention doing nothing about the real problem online, bullying and harrassment that causes kids to be depressed, isolated and in extreme cases to kill themselves, they are woried if there is a naked avatar or a gun. When the kids real worry is going to school and getting shot.

Im actually dumb founded that this is a thing, and a cc is the answer that works for them. Good job... how about parents be parents, and they decide what there kid can and cant play. Talk about gov over reach

UK Govt Rules shouldn't apply worldwide, that isn't how it works.

Need to stop that idea or soon no one be able to do anything.

So far there is push back from some corporations but its only the beginning. Apple said nope, and 4chan/Kiwi Farms are also pushing them away.

Steam already had my card details. No one else uses my logon so why not. Easier.
reminds me I need to update them for next time.

Lol, because there are of course sooo many children visiting adult community hubs on Steam. These people are so ridiculously oblivious it is amazing. There are plenty of Steam-type platforms on the net with violent and adult games with absolutely no age verification. You click and play all day long, regardless of age and it is completely FREE.

There are literally tons of free xxx flash games or naughty games sites and anyone with an IQ over 50 can just facesmash the keyboard and get into ANY of those sites. Heloooooooo?

Oh, and obviously, these people have never heard about family sharing or gifting games on Steam. No, no, most children off course do not have an older brother with tons of violent games. No, no, it's all Teletubbies and Disney princesses all day long.

Just to give another example of why this whole thing is absolutely ridiculous:

When I was a kid, I learned which TV channels had naughty stuff on them. I learned how to prerecord recorded VHS movies using tapes. I learned how to set a timer on the VCR to tape adult materials while I was sleeping. We were a small group of kids sharing Doom on Floppy disks because we learned how to do that whole thing. We knew who was the easiest guy at the VHS rental shop to rent violent movies from. When I was probably not more than six/seven years old, I snuck under one of the chairs in the living room while my sister was babysitting me and watched Cobra with Sylvester Stallone. As a young teen in the 90s, I made my own soundboard and used it to prank call people into believing they were part of a radio show, and if they answered questions correctly, they would get a prize they could pick up at the nearest shopping mall. My point is this: Kids are smart!

Safety Act...who are they trying to fool?

The government should be more concerned about artificial intelligence tools that pose a greater danger to young children. These bots are exposing these children to different content because of weak regulations.

This move might not just be to protect children but also for government surveillance. I suspect this because even accounts that are 18 years and above still have to go through the process. The government should allow parents to do their jobs.

I really am not going to save payment details in steam. As others have said it's just too risky. The real problem here is that it should be the parents that decide what their children can or cannot do and they should be given the tools to help support that.

The other issue that hasn't been raised is that it will probably cause a raise in piracy. If the kids can't get something on steam it's not going to take them long to find out where else the can get it.

It will now become difficult for parents to monitor the games children are getting from other sources.
