Hello !
After a long and excruciating time with a small laptop playing on minimum settings, I decided to jump the fence and try PC building. After reading around, I managed to put together this configuration:

i5-12400F + be quiet!Pure Rock 2 fan
Motherboard ASUS PRIME Z690 WIFI DDR4
RAM: Corsair Vengence 2x8Go 3200 MHz
GPU: ZOTAC Gaming GeForce RTX 3060
Hard drive 1To SSD
Power be quiet!Pure Power 11FM 650W

My goal is not to have the fastest and most powerful computer but to have something reliable and which can last a bit down the road. I'm not interested in playing FPS at full HD, but rather to be able to play Civilization 8 when its released, play Warhammer Total War 3 smoothly and so on.

So, what do you think ?Anything wrong ? Did I forget anything ? Any suggestions ?

Thanks a lot !

Do you have it already? I would have got a 1tb nvme and more storage as 1tb only goes so far.

if Civ 8 due in 7 years you probably need a new PC by then. Who knows what they will be like by then. 7 years ago 4 cores was the most you could get, now its the least... almost, some dual cores still... why?
Civ 8 probably want more ram too. But you don't need it now.

It looks good, for most part. Sure someone will suggest other changes.

Thanks !

I'm too old. It took me a while to understand that the 30s you're talking about are not the 1930s...

Very much appreciated, thanks for the help !
Welcome to the forums 😎

I also thought @Brian Boru was talking about some 30's spec hardware, then my mind flitted over to the 1930's (I'm still in my 20's though 😅) and then finally I realized it was 2030... lol.
if you don't have the PC yet, maybe you want to recalibrate a little more, maybe depending on how much budget you have left to splurge on building this baby out. 😉

I don't have the PC yet. As I am pretty sure it can be more optimized, I wanted to check with specialists first :)
In terms of budget, I wouldn't go much further. But any recalibration is welcome. Although, please no, "you should buy this much better and significantly more expensive XXX", as I probably won't be able to afford it :(

I'd suggest a B660 board. The savings would allow you to size up on either your gpu or more RAM.

What resolution are you planning on playing at? 1080p? The games you listed are pretty demanding graphically and you might still have to play at limited settings with a 3060. I would suggest adding another SSD too, you want to have 1 for your OS and 1 for your games at least, keep them separate.

Sounds reasonable. How about the flexibility ? Wouldn't I regret later choosing a B660 instead of a Z690 if I want to change some stuff ?

Yep, don't think I'll go further than 1080p. What would you think that's better than a 3060 and wouldn't be too much of a stretch of my finances ?

The only advantage the Z690 chipset has with a locked cpu is that it allows you to run dual M.2 SSD's which is no biggy seeing how you can add a SATA SSD later on. Look at the 6600 XT or an RTX 3060 Ti. btw what country are you located and do you require WiFi?

I'm in France (thus the weird answering time and the clumsy English) and I would definitely need WiFi.

Going from Z690 to B660 allows me to save about 100€, so I can definitely think of the 300Ti then.

So, thanks to your advice, here is the new version of the configuration:

CPU: i5-12400F + be quiet!Pure Rock 2 fan --> Intel® Core i7-12700F
Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z690 WIFI DDR4 --> GIGABYTE B660 DS3H DDR4, socket 1700
RAM: Corsair Vengence 2x8Go 3200 MHz --> same
GPU: ZOTAC Gaming GeForce RTX 3060 --> sadly the same as before, I cannot afford the 3060 RTX Ti after all
Hard drive: 1To SSD --> I'll stay with one to start with, and see if I need more.
Power: be quiet!Pure Power 11FM 650W
Box: Fractal Design CORE 2300 Midi Tower
WIFI: ASUS PCE-AX1800 BT5.2 Interne WLAN / Bluetooth 1775 Mbit/s

Total price: about 1500€

About the GPU, there is also ASUS Dual -RX6650XT-O8G AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT 8 Go GDDR6 , which is about a 100€ more expensive than the one I had chosen. Do you think it's worth it ? (btw the RTX 3060 has 12Go and this one has 8 Go. Isn't it worse ?)

Thanks again for your help !
