I was wondering if upgrading from a i5-6500 3.2ghz quad to a i5-8400 2.8ghz 6core is a good enough jump for more graphic intense games?

currently have a gtx 1660 super with 16gbs ram
Most games run fine but tried Cyberpunk, COD and RDR2 got 25~35FPS low settings

It wont work in your motherboard, so it wont help I'm afraid.

Sockets physically the same, but Intel made the chipsets incompatible. Some people managed to work around it IIRC but it wasnt that easy to do and required some custom unofficial BIOS and drivers to work.

I7 7700K is your best option with the latest BIOS on your motherboard.

Yea I didnt realize that I would also need to change my motherboard.
The i7 7700 is a bit pricey but better than buy 2 parts
And in your opinion will it hold out for 2-3yrs for intensely graphical games and 3d rendering with my 1660 super?

It will be an improvement. Its able to run most if not all current games, but I'm afraid I dont have a crystal ball to tell whether it will run everything released in the next few years.

Depending on the price of the 7700K and if you have DDR4 RAM already you could re-use, it might be better to pick up a new motherboard and CPU like these.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: Intel Core i3-12100F 3.3 GHz Quad-Core Processor ($101.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Asus PRIME B660M-A D4 Micro ATX LGA1700 Motherboard ($109.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $211.98

I had a quick look on Ebay and some 7700Ks are going for almost the same cost as this. This would be a better value, assuming you already have DDR4 RAM. Quite a bit faster and more upgradeable in the future.

Thanks for being such a huge help in giving me more options.
I'll have to think about which way I would like to upgrade since I do have DDR4 ram but my i think my mobo is a bit 'older' so either way I have to save just a bit more.
