graphics card and motherboard compatibility

hello, I was wondering how to know if a graphics card is compatible or not with a motherboard. Thank you for your reply

If the motherboard and graphics card were both made in say, the last 15 years they are compatible

The slot used for graphics PCI-Express x16 is on its 4th generation and is backwards compatible with cards of all previous generations.
