DarkOne, owner and operator of Nexus, announces his retirement.

Without thinking harder, I'd say that Nexus has been the second most impactful service (behind Steam) for PC gaming in the 21st century. Today it's founder announced his retirement.

He's had to put up with a lot of political nonsense the last few years and seems to be anxious to leave it all behind. Hopefully the new owners/managers will work out.

It is absolutely up there. Nexus revolutionized modding for PC games unlike any service before it. Sure, there were dedicated modding websites that predate Nexus (Doomworld comes to mind), but the massive range of games supported and general ease of use is really what made it king. I've used Nexus since I even knew what modding is. I know that there have been lots of issues with the site lately, mainly from users wanting to express themselves outside of the terms and conditions of the site they signed up for, to put it politely. I wish him and Nexus as a whole the best!

He absolutely deserves it. If there was a top 5, itd be somewhere in there, right next to TPB/Fitpack Girl and Steam.

Now, im not a HUGE modder and ive used other sites for complete overhaul mod packs, but when i DID use it, was very easy to access. Ive paid for premium enough to say that i got my moneys worth ten-fold.

Im saddened to see people being happy about him leaving because now they expect mods that were previously banned (like nude mods, extremist mods etc.) to become allowed again and i hope whoever bought it keeps it the way its going. These people dont need to be using mods anyways.

Congrats Dark0ne

Always gotta take a step back when things are getting crazy for ya, specially after doing it that long.

That said Nexus mod wasn't my choice to get mods or have to use, I always liked moddb myself, but sadly more people used Nexus as time went on and the forced signup to dl bigger files annoyed me to say the least.

I wonder if somewhere else might pop up? I've seen rumblings that Nexus was bought by private equity, so I'd be surprised if some offshoot isn't already in development.

I don't use Nexus too often, but I've definitely grabbed plenty of mods from it over the years and plenty I go back to when I do a new install of an old game.
