Unfortunately, USPS has been gutted for the last 20 years, which was accelerated in the last 10 and no one really knows why... It's written into our constitution, so it can't outright be scrapped and sold for parts to the lowest bidder, but damned if no one is trying...

Helped my Nibling build their first computer yesterday for their 16th birthday and it was a very good time. They came over earlier, we had some lunch and then got started; I got to explain all the parts as we were doing them and then we got to do a run to microcenter to get them a monitor and some speakers. Then we did a family game night afterwards, so it ended up being a long day.

What was funny to me is that I was constantly thirsty and my throat was dry, because I'm not used to talking so much. Definitely out of the ordinary for me.

Anyway, they're super excited and I'm happy to see that excitement in them. They'll finally get to play PC games with their friends, even if it's mostly just Gacha and free to play stuff. They did express some interest in Lethal Company though, so we'll see!

I started on 3000 and jumped to 5000.

Guess I never really bothered updating CPU before that. the 5800x3d was too tempting.

Well, either Chicago was the wrong direction or they have an international shipping hub at O'Hare............Ah, they do. It will probably in the air and headed your way any moment now. USPS is kind of slow, but they are extremely reliable, and they don't break your stuff like UPS does. FedEx would have gotten it there in about 24 hours, but the cost is pretty high. Of course you said you weren't given any options.

FedEx is headquartered in Memphis, TN, about 6 hours from me.

@Colif I just noticed you mentioned two mail systems. USPS is run by the US government, and loses billions of dollars a year. It's strictly inside the US and these days is mostly for keeping UPS and FedEx in check. Well, normal envelope stuff like bills and junk mail always use USPS. Amazon uses them quite a bit, too, because they are extremely cheap and more reliable, no idea why, than UPS. Anyway, they fly things over to other countries and just hand them off to whatever system is in that country.

Amazon is amazing where I live. I usually get things 2 or 3 hours after I order them. Of course, it's only about a 10 minute drive to their warehouse.

As for the mail system. I suspect the USPS only does flights to Australia every so often, so it didn't have time pressure to get to Chicago. They really aren't for international shipping anymore. I was surprised that was who the place you ordered from used. I guess it's because they are so cheap.

USPS utilizes daily commercial and cargo flights to send mail from the USA to Australia, with three plans

Express Mail: 3–5 business days.
Priority Mail: 6–10 business days.
First-Class Package: 7–21 business days.

I just happen to have picked the last. I think it was the only choice. They probably would have sped up if it was the other two.

I wasn't really in a rush to get the package, I just wanted to know where it was. if they use all 21 days its not even late yet.

If its hardware I would have paid more for a faster delivery but then I have only ever bought 3 things from USA and I wouldn't ship PC hardware from OS. Hard to arrange returns.
If I buy PC hardware I normally pay more to make sure its tracked and I get it as soon as possible.
This was just cable adapters.

Fastest Amazon can deliver here from USA is 48 hours or so. Depends on when you order. They tend not to offer us those packages though.

I have a friend on Steam who is exactly like me. Has an enormous game list, an enormous wishlist. Has the same eclectic list of games he plays. Plays every day.

It's now been 28 days since he's been on Steam.

Some of my friends never reply to my messages... I was starting to wonder about one and asked another friend if they knew anything. He finally answered yesterday. Too busy to reply.
One guy I have known for 25 years now... it was a shock to me to find he was 40 recently... Its easy to think they are as young as you remember them still. He hardly answers my messages as he grew up.

Perhaps they put themselves in Offline mode and then forgot? I do this often. I also had a friend do this just after having a baby, because they were just generally pooped all the time and didn't want to be bothered when they had a minute to play something..

Speaking of which, that same friend is getting out of the hospital, probably today. Went and brought him lunch and hung out with him for several hours yesterday. He looks rough, but that makes sense after three heart surgeries. His wife is a wreck, because apparently they had to remove so much of his heart, if he gets another STAPH infection he's done for. Sounds scary, but after 55 days in the hospital, he's ready to go home and try to get back to normal.

Anyway, I think we're all just thankful he's still in here for now and hoping for an easy and speedy recovery.

I finally got mine sorted. I was pretty lakadasical about taking it and generally took it like three to four hours after lunch. Turns out, my stomach and gut wasn't happy about this.

Switching to immediately after lunch has improved my situation dramatically.

good idea, I am always in offline mode. Mainly as if I am in Steam for a long period of time, I am playing a game and don't really like interruptions.
I tend to do same thing in Discord as well. Anything that lets me hide

By happenstance, I found someone who can possibly repair my laptop. I dropped it off today and it's just some guy who runs a repair business out of his apartment; after submitting a ticket and doing an intake with him, he seems trustworthy, but I guess we'll see! He sent me a quote late today and said he could fix it for $120, which seems low to replace some tiny fuses, but if he's got the skills, maybe it's no issue for him.

We'll see. The quote seems pretty low, so I'm skeptical if he understands the full scope of the issue, as it really seems like it should be more expensive. But he has several hundred reviews on Google, a lot of which are resoldering things.

I did remove my SSD and a stick of RAM, just to cover my butt.

If he has hundreds of reviews on Google, I'll put my money on him being competent. In my experience, people like this, working out of their homes, often charge a fraction of what people renting out a storefront charge. I found a small motor repair guy working out of his garage who charges me so little I'm literally uncomfortable with it and feel like I'm taking advantage of him. Of course, not all his repairs are manufacturer approved. He just MacGyver's everything, but it works....
