Getting pretty tired of everything being AI focused now. I was excited about the future of AI starting back about 3-4 years ago, but where we are at with it, nothing seems to be worth using anymore. For me personally, the only AI I use is a chatbot, basically a glorified search engine. I'm no longer interested in image gen, agentic AI, any of that stuff. None of it seems useful for me personally. I'm not talking down on anyone that does use it, because it does have lots of helpful use-cases, and it is a fun toy to mess around with. However for my daily life, the chatbot is all I need. The shortcut I made on my phone, I now run that directly through the on-device model. It's still plenty fast enough, and is very useful for quick questions.

Also I'm getting very burnt out on work. I have no motivation to work hard. I'm not very productive. I'm tired of the corporate office life.

I don't really have any skills outside of this job, and I don't want to just jump companies. I make better money that I deserve, and I'm treated fairly. It's the entire aspect of an 8am-5pm Monday-Friday job that is wearing me down. I don't want to sound like some lazy Gen-Z'er, I would absolutely work hard at something I am passionate about, but this just isn't it. I know everyone on Earth is exactly this way unless they have a job they love. I wish I had an easy path to a new way forward in life, but for right now I'm not sure how to get out of this rut I'm in. I think I'm depressed as well, just because this isn't the kind of life I want to live.

I'm willing to stick this out for however long I need to until I can find an alternative, I'm not going to up and quit one day. Realistically it brings a lot of financial stability, but even with that I'm unsure how long it will last. Something major could happen and my pay gets cut drastically without being able to plan for it.

Have you guys felt this way before too? If so, what did you do to get out of this mindset?

But its the new buzz word.
I can't say I have noticed, it was everywhere in PC parts last year, I might just ignore it now.

So today I had an appointment at 12.30pm, and the person I needed to see wasn't in the office, so I spoke to a member of staff, and said that I would talk to her at my next appointment and left my name assuming they would mark me as attending.

I didn't think to ask for the persons name I was talking with.

Then at 2pm once I got home, I sent an email to the person I was meant to see, explaining I had been in and my progress in a ICT 3 course I am doing

Then at 5pm I received a phone call asking why I had missed my appointment, which I had actually been to. I replied to the call, but I just talked to answering service and left two messages.

I thought I would reach out to the person I was meant to see today, and mention what was happening just to get a reply email saying that address no longer works. That indicates to me she no longer works there... I had no idea she wasn't there any more. I would have had my appointment today if it had been mentioned.

They have booked another appointment for me on Monday so I can talk to someone then. Explain to a new person what I am doing... again, I had only recently started seeing the person I was meant to see today.

I haven't found any use for AI in my daily life, not even for the chatbots. I still prefer to look up stuff through a regular search engine and I'll ignore the AI summary that often pops up. I was actually pretty impressed the couple of times I used it to look up a question for work before, but I kinda forgot about it as it doesn't happen that often that I don't know where to find the documentation for what I'm looking for.

I feel very little motivation for work right now, but I think that's mostly because I'm just tired in general. My sleep schedule has been terrible, I think I've been averaging maybe 6 hours of sleep a day and I only just started work again after having called out sick for a week because I had a bad cold.

At my last job however I was actually unmotivated for my work. My co-workers were great, I made decent money and I was treated well, but I just did not care about the work itself. I fixed it by looking for another job, which was good because I was let go not too long after I started looking. It hadn't escaped my boss' attention that I didn't really care about my work.

I find it useful for when I have an extremely specific question or can't find a good way to word it correctly. LLMs are good at understanding what you are trying to say when you misspell or word your question strangely.

I think this is a major issue for me as well. I tend to sleep 6-7 hours a day, but never solid. I'm always waking up at least once, if not two or three times a night. No matter what I've tried nothing helps. I think the only solution is to get a really good bed that promotes better blood circulation at night and overall more comfort. I've done all the tricks people say to do like keep your room cool and completely dark, but something inside me still wakes me up every night. Perhaps my circadian rhythm is out of wack.

This sounds a lot like my position. Love everything about the job besides the work itself. It's so mundane and mind-numbing, to the point where I am failing to see the purpose of doing it day in and day out. What you said at the end put some fear into me because what if my boss notices my apathy as well haha. At the end of it all I'm really just complaining to complain, when I take a step back and look at my life, I am very grateful that I am able to support myself and loved ones with general ease. I don't have kids yet but I sure better not be feeling this way once I do, I'd hate to be an apathetic/unmotivated father.

Oh yeah. Programs start looking a lot alike after a while. Describe the data and I know just what the database tables will look like. I'll pretty much know what the GUI looks like, too. Need to pick from a list of options, OK, is it just two options? Checkbox. Three or four options? Radio buttons. A dozen or two? Drop down list box. A hundred? Type-ahead list box. Thousands? Better have some sort of categories on those things, maybe we can do a tree view or filtering or something. Whatever it is, I've done it many times before.

Let's see, what helps... well NEW things. It doesn't even have to be work stuff. Just a change in environment can help for a while. Play some music. Play a different kind of music. Stop playing music. More light. Less light. Open the window blinds. Sing my code using a chanting style... err, probably best to only do that one if you're working from home.

I love that the radio station I listen to plays drug advertisements all day long. It's great comedy:

Woman 1: Are you okay?

Woman 2: I have oily stools.

I imagine that Woman 1 never asked anyone if they were okay ever again. The commercial was actually worse than that. Woman 2 immediately went through a long list of poop texture complaints that would be impossible for me to recreate. It was one of the most awesome things I've ever heard.

I felt this way about most of my jobs. Somehow I still managed to work hard at all of them. I even won awards at the job I hated so badly that I had to quit or face serious mental health issues.

My solution was always to switch jobs; however, this didn't work out well for a decent length of time, and I got jobs that I hated more each time I switched. I finally got lucky and got a job I was happy with, but it was a long and painful road that I don't necessarily recommend to others.

So, unfortunately, I don't have any advice for you. Jobs suck.

Drug companies can't advertise here so I won't ever hear these classics. You may not hear them going forward either. That revenue stream might be stopped. Media needs to find other advertisers... and they might struggle as many of them lack an audience. It is on life support.

Our local stations just play crap, songs I heard 30 years or more ago... not sure how they exist still. Most people wouldn't listen to them... apart from the elderly.

The local music stations are doing poorly, but the radio station I listen to is a sports talk radio station that gets hundreds of thousands of listeners at any given moment (most through online apps). They have a couple of shows that are ranked #1 nationally (based on quality, not the number of listeners). So this particular radio station is doing great.

I consistently have this issue. The one thing I've found that helps (but doesn't completely resolve) are earplugs, specifically this brand and this style

I still might wake up at night, but it's less frequent with these and I do get all night sleeps depending on some other factors.

I find it happens; of course, my kids are my job, so that may have something to do with it. But there's a sheer relentlessness to kids that has this effect on everyone I know who has kids; it just wears you down and you end up going through peaks and troughs of energy through various periods. Summer is particularly hard, I find.

My sister in law and kids leave tomorrow and while it's been fun to have them, I'm eager to have my house back to myself and some return to my routine that I've been unable to have in the 3 weeks they've been here. My kids and my wife will be disappointed and to some extent I will be as well, but I desperately need a break.

Though next week we're taking a trip to Chicago for about 4 days to see some of my family, which should be some fun.

I don't know what mattresses you sleep on, but a hotel I go to occasionally has these: BeautyRest World Class

It's the Level 4 Firm mattress.

To give you an idea of why I'm buying one of these next month, I never sleep through the night. I'm up and down at least twice a night, often more than that. But every time I sleep at this hotel, I sleep through the night. I didn't think I wanted a "firm" mattress, but these things are just next level comfortable.

And then I went to lunch with my dad one day, and he mentioned that the only time he wasn't up and down during the night was when he stayed at that hotel.

I thought, WTH. I need to find out what this mattress is, and so my budget is spoken for this month. I have to buy my wife something crazy expensive, but next month I'm finally buying this thing. Honestly, if I get it, and I still don't sleep through the night, I won't care because I just love these mattresses. I could lay on them all day.

Oh, and the Mack's wax earplugs are amazing. I keep them by the bed all the time.

This may be a huge help for me, I'm an extremely light sleeper so the smallest sounds can wake me up. Another issue is whenever I do wake up, if I have the slightest thought of waking up, it's like my entire body jolts awake and I have to get up. If I don't think about it, I usually can fall right back asleep.

You're completely right about that. I can't see it being completely smooth and easy all the time. The way I worded my last message was a bit harsh, my main point was that I hope I can find more energy and motivation at being a good parent and my job, and that I hope to overcome my laziness in my life in general. More motivation to do the things I need to do in life.

I can tell you right away, my mattress is at least 7x cheaper than that. I have always bought cheaper mattresses and replace them every 1-2 years when they go bad. That is a horrible idea. In the last year or so, everyone and their mother told me a mattress is one expense you should not skimp out on. I wish someone would have told me this 10 years ago, could have saved me a lifetime of back pain and insomnia.

for 5 years I had a fish tank in my room with a pump running all the time. I got used to it, so when I stopped having a fish tank in my room EVERY little noise would keep me awake. The pump had blocked them out. It was suddenly too quiet.

Fish tanks absence seemed to result in me being super sensitive to little noises.
I don't think it was so bad for a while but in the last 10 years or so, someone in neighbourhood started running what I think is a pool cleaning robot. Its not every night but when it is on, it starts at 11pm and runs until 6am... i know as some nights its kept me awake the entire time. 6am is my escape time...

last few years every little sound when I am awake is blamed on my PC :D
Night time it happens too, until I turn it off and realise noise is (more often than not) still there.

I have tried ear plugs before, often the rubber/foam ones would fall out during night.
Some people suggest listening to music to help you sleep... that would keep me awake...

Once I am asleep nothing wakes me up. Its just getting there that is my problem. I should be asleep now... its 5am (on Thursday.... what do you mean its still Wednesday there? Hurry up already).

This mattress comes with a 10 year warranty. If you've been sleeping on trash all this time, you might just get emotional if you tried this one. I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing their cheaper mattress is pretty awesome as well, and depending on how much you are spending every 1 to 2 years, this may actually save you money in the long run. What you need to do is take your wife's jewelry to a pawn shop then tell her someone broke into the house and stole it. Tell her if you hadn't just bought a mattress, you'd buy her all new jewelry. Then say, "I know what would make you feel better," and start taking off your clothes while dancing sensually. If there's a pole nearby, you know how to use it...

I've been reading the "girls only" subreddit. I think I'm ready to give you that job advice now. Just curious, how far do you think you could shove a stick of pepperoni down your throat?

Hey guys, does anyone here (probably on west coast US) shop at Safeway grocery store? I ask because for some time their website more often than not will not properly search for products. I always compare prices this way to Fred Meyer when I make my grocery list. I used to buy about half of what's on my list at each store. Now I only buy a few items at Safeway and like 20 items at Fred Meyer. Has anyone else had problems searching for items on Safeway's site?

On top of that it is often hard to get hold of their phone staff, or you'll be told it will be an hr or two wait even in the morning. So I contacted their chat instead after twice being disconnected by phone, and chat live agent says to try the app or a different browser. I told her I'd rather use the site on my desktop because searching for this kind of thing on a tiny screen takes too long, and that I am using Chrome. When I said or can't your idiot IT person even get the site to work with Chrome anymore, she said she'll have to end the chat if I continue to talk that way. I then chose to end the chat myself.

So I called back a 3rd time, and this time told the lower tier staff person please do not disconnect me. She said others had complained about the site not working, and their techs are working on fixing it (it's been months). I said they must be dragging their feet or incompetent, because it's been a problem a long time. I asked to talk to a supervisor. When the sup came on the phone she tried to give me this BS after telling her a product I couldn't search for, that she could find it on her end and they would fix my account from their end.

I said, hold on a minute, I do not trust any of your IT people to fiddle with my account, and I was just told by your lower tier person your techs have already said they are trying to fix it on YOUR end! She then came clean and admitted they need to fix it. I ended by saying I feel bad for your store employees, because none of this is their fault and they shouldn't have to lose business over it, to which she agreed.

I get the feeling Safeway corporate has gone through a changing of the guard with the higher ups lately, because things used to not be nearly as bad with their site or phone service. Another thing I told the sup is even when Fred Meyer completely changed the look of their site lately, which I don't like because it's a dorky cartoon look, the transition went seamlessly and their search function always worked.

No you won't, because you'll have gotten a good night's sleep! Gotta go the other way to get really emotional. ;)

Give me an ultra-soft, though. Trying to sleep on my side on a firm mattress will lead to back pain for sure.

I'm not in the US, but I did see that more and more Safeway employees have started striking over the past few days because of being overworked, understaffed and underpaid:
