The whole purpose of everything I've done since age 10 has been to impress a girl. If I do something and no girl is impressed, I feel I've wasted my time.

Since I read this post, about 10 minutes ago, I have been scratching my head trying to remember if I ever did anything to try to impress a girl. Nothing comes to mind. However, it must be noted that up until I was 14 girls were trying to impress me for some reason.

I have no idea what happen at 14 to change that.

I was a notorious womanizer from an early age until I got married at 28. Got me into a lot of trouble (not to mention trips to the doctor). The biggest surprise of my life was that I was able to turn it off and stay faithful to my wife. I can easily remember anxiety in the months before the wedding because I absolutely knew for a fact that I was doomed to failure.

I'm a little concerned about my son at college. He is one of the calmest yet charismatic persons I've ever met. Girls are the moths, and he is the flame. But he doesn't seem to have the overwhelming obsession that I had. By all accounts he is perfectly faithful to his girlfriend and never goes looking for trouble. His sister keeps me updated :ROFLMAO:

My family was all convinced I'd be single forever since I didn't show any interest in girls (or boys, for that matter). Nor did any of them show any interest in me.

It wasn't until I was about 20 that I decided that it might be nice to have a relationship. I got married at 22.

That's probably a better way to go about it. It gives you a chance to study hard and get good grades in planning for a career, but also time to have fun with school friends and sports or whatever. Too many kids I think fall into pier pressure traps regarding relationships at a young age, then bad habits, or worse yet, conception accidents can happen. Life happens badly if you let it.

There's actually a better than 50/50 chance that I was habitually abused by a babysitter the first 2 1/2 years of my life, which caused me to be obsessed with women and sexuality long before reaching puberty. At least, I had more than one psychologist tell me this was likely.

My job is going to give us a €1000 budget to buy equipment to help us work from home. It's going to be a limited selection of course, but I'm thinking of getting a monitor, keyboard, mouse and office chair and then buying a budget PC from my own money this spring when I get my vacation money.

Also, I didn't realise that office chairs are so insanely expensive. The cheapest is €350 and they quickly go to €500+. I could buy an entire new budget PC for that money.

I had this issue two years ago. I needed a new chair because my old one broke after 25 years of sitting on it (tsk) and I also wanted it to play the guitar on which implied more requirements than an office chair (so no arms and no wheels).

I got a fantastic, solid, very comfortable swedish (not IKEA) made dining chair for €200 at a home design store. I've since found others, perhaps not as nice but even cheaper, elsewhere.

If you're not dead set on regular office chairs, I recommend you shop around for something different.

The budget from my job is going to be restricted to a specific subset of a particular webstore, so I won't be able to shop around.

I would seriously advise prioritizing speed on everything from CPU, to drives, to internet before picking out those other items. This is because whenever I hear someone getting a "budget PC" for work, I imagine such problems might occur. Anything that slows your work down in the slightest way can accumulate into major time management problems with your personal life. ;)

As for decent task chairs, yes, they've gotten quite expensive. If you have access to Amazon where you live they have some good options in mesh task chairs, and good return policies if they don't fit well enough.

Note that I already have a laptop I do my work on. I highly doubt I'll be able to buy any computer parts with the budget, only peripherals. The idea is to hook those up to a new budget PC for when I'm not working, since my company doesn't allow me to use my laptop for games.

The budget has to be used at one particular store though, so I can't go shopping for anything cheaper, but €1000 should still be plenty for a chair and some peripherals.

From my short time in this forum I've noticed I was not the only one that occasionally gets burned out on gaming (usually once a year for a couple of months in my case). During those times I dedicate myself to different hobbies, like listening or playing music (guitar), reading, etc.

I would actually consider my main hobby to be music even though I may end up spending more time on the computer overall.

Do any of you have other hobbies apart from computer gaming?

I used to, before I became a father...

In all seriousness, my main other hobby is to consume Fantasy and Science Fiction media. I used to read a ton of books, but I stopped doing that at some point. I'd like to go back to reading but I'm often too tired or distracted to start.

I also love playing board games and Dungeons and Dragons. I'm slowly introducing my kid to board games, but she doesn't have the patience for anything that takes longer than 10 minutes at most. I've been meaning to look up kid friendly TTRPG adventures because I'm sure they must exist, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Ah HA!! You can join me in my crusade to change these crazy music minigames so, rather than trying to work through weird control scheme, we can just hook up a microphone and perform the gorram thing!

I also have a 6 year old who is my main hobby. Other than that it probably sounds pretty boring, I like reading articles on just about anything, I have a regular game of Gloomhaven going with a couple of friends, do some other game nights with a wider group of friends where we go to escape rooms or laser quest type things or also just play board games. I go walking most days and listen to books while I do it.

Used to do more sports, but I both aged out of it and moved countries 10 years ago.

That sounds like the opposite of boring. You're living the dream.

Weirdly, I picked up a ton more hobbies and delved into them more deeply than I had in the past, after i had my first.

But I think that's two fold: less time for myself meant the time I did have got much more valuable, so I ended up trying to do more than just gaming.

I also gave up a big vice when my oldest was a year old, because I realized it wasn't benefiting me, it was sucking up a majority of my time and money and I was missing out on my kids milestones because I was too wrapped up in it.

But also with hobbies, I've gotten in to one recently because my oldest had expressed interest in it and then was gifted an item for the hobby over Christmas. Having already had an interest in it myself, I picked up my own and have been trying to teach them, though they're only 7, so focus only lasts about 15 minutes.

Ive always been a bit jealous of people who managed to focus on one particular thing. I think there's value in that as well, but I get what you mean.

This.

I envy people who can play one particular game for thousands of hours, study deeply and understand one particular wargame so thoroughly, just do anything with a focus I don't have. Don't know about you, but I'm too much of a dilettante.

I have to get up 6 am or earlier on workdays most of the year, so weekday evenings are pretty short after shes in bed. By that point Im usually half asleep and dont feel like I have energy to start anything new. Scheduling things in would help, getting started is the hardest part I know.

The local library has plenty of age appropriate board games here so I play those with her as well as video games and the usual coloring in, crafting and stuff. Hobbywise she has liked just about everything we take her too, kids music school, ice skating, swimming. They dont start school here until 7, so maybe she'll pick stuff up from other kids when shes there.

Keeping it in mind that at some point she wont be playing with me at all anymore, its worth it :)

I'm not sure if I'd say I'm jealous/envious of people who are an expert at a specific hobby, but it is interesting to hear their thoughts about their hobby of choice. And I would say I've played enough games to consider myself a bit of an expert, just not in any one game in particular.

More of the fact they found something so interesting to them they couldnt put it down. But its not something I spend waking hours in the middle of the night cursing myself for.

Oh absolutely. My alarm is at 630 so we can get the kids out the door by 730 on weekdays. Then they're usually in bed by 830, though last night it was closer to 9pm and at that point I didn't much feel like doing anything. Think I briefly played some Peglin and Diablo 2. Well actually Advance Wars DS when I was lying in bed as well 😆

But I'm lucky enough to have been a stay at home parent for the last 7 years. It's been relentless, but I'm finally at the point that both kids are in school (though the youngest only from Mon-Thurs), so assuming I don't have actual things to accomplish (which I often do), I have time to do my hobbies during the day for an hour or two. I'll probably need to get a job later this year though and finally start contributing to my retirement again; hoping my sabbatical doesn't harm me too much in my career path.

I wouldn't say I long for it, just that I wish I could say I'm an expert at something.

That said, I think being a generalist and knowing more than the average bear about a lot of things is a strength in and of itself.
