Advice for a returning PC gamer

Returned to PC gaming a while back after being a console player only gamer since PS4.

Got back into it thanks to ROG Ally then got myself a RTX 4070 14900h Laptop about a year ago .

Having now dawned on me just how much better and how much cheaper games are on PC, I have started playing with the idea of building a desktop again. But I have been out of the loop for so long that I have only a vague idea of the market so to speak.

Long story short, how big of an upgrade do I need to invest in to get a significant difference from my Laptop? I dont care for 4k Gaming, 1440p is fine. But I would like to play at high-ultra settings and be good for a few years. My primary concern is my Laptop only having 8GB Vram.

Would a 9070XT with a decent processor be a decent upgrade? I read somewhere that intel processors are having quality problems and should be avoided?

What country are you located and what is your budget?

IMHO i think you will struggle with a lot of games using a card that only has 8gb video ram , take for example my go to game satisfactory , big machines , trucks , trains fast moving conveyor belts and drones flying all over the place. Their is a hell of a lot of number crunching going on " under the bonnet ".

I run satisfactory with everything on ultra but as my gtx 1080 only has 8gb of video ram i have AA set to FXAA.

You can increase the vram in laptops by adding system ram. As they share system memory... though its not as good as actual VRAM (more latency).

If you buy a new system for gaming I would look at a 9800x3d as it makes the intel CPU currently look like they standing still

How a 9070XT compares to a 4070 with a 9800x3d as CPU

If you do more with PC than just game, this might be a good option.

I am upgrading myself at the moment and currently only parts I haven't bought are CPU & Storage

got to know your budget before we can make realistic recommendations. If the budget is tight, you need to prioritize the GPU over the CPU. In most games the CPU is not going to make much of a difference.
