Mask of the Rose is the upcoming game from the developers of Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies: a visual novel set in an alternate history Victorian London which has just recently been stolen by bats.

In celebration of the free Mask of the Rose demo coming to Steam today, we're taking over the PC Gamer forums to talk about romance in games and answer questions about the demo. We also have $100 in Steam or GOG credit and a set of our utterly gorgeous deluxe playing cards to give away to a PC Gamer forums user!

Take a look at our other threads to hear more about developing a visual novel where you can pursue romantic love or take a different approach: brief liaisons, asexual relationships and platonic connections are all possible within this story, with equal opportunities for all genders to seek whatever kind love they’re after.

To enter, simply post your answer to this question in this thread:

"If you could take a video game character on a platonic date, who would it be, and where would you go?"

The competition will close Tuesday 15th February 2022 at noon GMT. The winner will be notified via a forums message within 3 days of the competition closing.

1. The promotion will be open for a limited period of time, depending on which promotion you enter into.
2. Our decision will be final and cannot be appealed.

I think probably I would want to take Jaal Ama Darav from Mass Effect Andromeda out to a well-maintained zoo and/or aquarium to see all the earth animals, and then maybe also to an animal shelter to pet puppies.

I just think he'd enjoy it. :)

Only platonic, huh? That would be Judy Alvarez from Cyberpunk 2077, because she'd totally not be into me. That being said, I'd take her to Planet 4546B, a.k.a. the planet from Subnautica, for some tropical vacay.

Definetely my first true love, Aerith Gainsborough from Final Fantasy VII. I'd take her to the cinema because she never saw anything like that.

I would take Geralt from the Witcher games out around town for a day just to listen to him be dryly snarky to everyone we encountered.

I think I'd go ahead and take the Kid, from Supergiant's Bastion, out for a nice stew meal somewhere. It just seems like a lot, having to deal with your world falling down around you, and I think it'd be nice to give the Kid a chance to destress and just breathe for a minute. Good food may not cure everything, but I think it helps take the edge off most things.

This is going to sound terribly vain, but I would like my own Fallen London character to host a dinner for me, with no more of an introduction than that I am a person of considerable importance to his own ambitions. Some of our core values would have to be similar, but though I make major decisions for him we're very different people. Anyway, anyone with the skill and courage to do the crazy things expected of him on a whim would have to be brilliant.

For a platonic date... I'd probably have to go with Hedwyn from Pyre. Honestly, just getting to hang out with any of the Nightwings would be so cool... But I'd let him show me around his favorite places in the Downside.
