What was the last game you played that read your old save?

Back in the days of yore, it wasn't all that rare for a game in a series to ask you for a save game from a previous game in the series. For instance, Dragon Age 2 would check what your character looked like in DA1 and put a statue up that looked like your old character.

Now, the practice is all but gone - which seems weird to me given our cavernous hard drives that are hardly worth cleaning up and cloud saves which can persist from platform to platform. I think the last one that did that for me was Witcher 3. (It did it quite well, too, keeping a tattoo you could get in the second game around.) Other than W3, I think I would have to go back to Dragon Age 2 for a game that used a previous game's save.

Has anyone else gotten to do this in other games recently? Do you think any future games are likely to do this? (Hmmm, perhaps Kingdom Come 2....)

I'm pretty sure Mass Effect 3 was the last time for me. Unless I played The Witcher 2 after that, I don't quite remember.

I would say it was uncommon, but way more than a handful. I asked Copilot and it listed off Mass Effect, Witcher, The Walking Dead, .Hack, and others. It pointed out an article in PC Gamer that says Bard's Tale 2 would let you load your save from Ultima or Wizardry, as well as Bard's Tale 1!

Baldurs gate 2, had character import and a special quest if you had a pair of pantaloons in your inventory.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth read my old save for FF7 Remake and awarded me a couple of summons for it. I don't know if it was just for having a save that had data from both the main game and the DLC or if it was for completing both.

Technically it was Dragon's age inquistion, but The witcher 3 would have the last one. I say the former because i didn't have a save game file from the previous witcher games on hand (if i knew that i can transfer them i would have kept them and all the equipment etc and decisions).

mercifully, the start of the witcher 3 they just ask you some questions to fill in the blanks. So....

I'm sure there are others, maybe Yakuza 4 but that technically was checking whether you bought the previous games in the series and rewarded you with a few items at the safe house.

I thought Quest For Glory had an import your hero feature from previous games. Was bloody amazing back in the day.

It's probably Yakuza 0, but I'm not exactly sure of the date since it was a while back when I loaded up my old save. If I were to guess, late 2019 or early 2020.

Doing a clean install is the quickest way to get round any problems that annoy you , i do a clean install every couple of years just for the hell of it. Before i do it i put save files for all my games on a pen drive just in case i dont want to start them from the beginning again after re-installing them.
