What kind of controller do I need for a laptop?

I'm new with gaming. I usually shop at Walmart incase if something doesn't work I can easily return it. Can any Xbox controller work with a laptop for gaming? Is there any software I need to download to get the controller to work with my computer, and are there any controllers I should avoid buying?

Xbox works natively with Windows. You don't have to download any special software. If you are using Steam to play games, any controller, like Playstation or Nintendo, will work as well. Xbox controller is pretty solid, though, and would be a good choice.
