What do you think of dungeon crawlers

It was not until i decided to do this posting that i realised how many i have.

Dungeons 1,2,3, published by kalypso media .... some would not describe these as proper dungeon crawlers because they are above ground and look a bit arcade style , judge them on their own merits but dont forget how old they are.

Legend of grimrock 1 and 2 ..... Highly polished with action both below and underground , if you take a look at the maps posted for these you will be surprised at how big these are , in an Egyptian area the only way i could beat something was to jump down gap between 2 flames ( bug ?? ) and when something turned its back on me jump out and hit it and run back if if followed me , repeat until its dead.

Crystal rift ...... this is typical of dungeon games , monsters and puzzles and the object of the game is to collect 22 idols and find the correct crystals for the next level , you cant go down the last staircase unless you get all idols. Some players said this is bugged and unusable..... look at the steam post i made titled ..... no bugs in this ..... no matter what i said i could not convince some players that their is nothing wrong with it and because of the abuse i got from some players steam deleted a lot of the postings.

Dungeon of the dragon knight .... this is a really good old fashioned dungeons type game levers , monsters , puzzles and " hidden " things. Tip ... study everything and look for crack patterns on some walls.

Vaporum .... very old school and because some rooms are very dark you might miss something obvious . Tips somewhere you have to find a sort of code to turn off some gas , you MUST find the document with the code as its random to every game so youtube wont help you. You must find some documents with teleport codes in them , i you dont get them you wont get to collect 4 of something. At the end room .... you will know you are their before you enter it ...... you can pause action for a break but you cant save part way through. One web site said 10 hours to complete .... it took me 43.

Vaporum lockdown .... at the time of posting this i had only just started it...... i paid £ 1.65 and £ 3.60 respectively at xmas on GOG you can get them as a twin pack for £28 on steam.

And finally ...... A lot of games say they all look the same and just pinch ideas off each other .... all i wil say is a trapdoor is a trapdoor is a trapdoor and their is only one way to do it , make a hole in the floor and either fall in the hole or work out how to make it stay shut ..... end of ...

I think I've only tried one first person dungeon crawler: D&D: Eye of the Beholder for the Game Boy Advance, which uses a grid based battle map for its combat.

I don't really like having to move around in first person like that, I prefer dungeon crawling with an isometric or top down perspective so I have clearer idea of where stuff is.

i have a soft spot for dungeon crawlers. Especially the blobers. The last one was technically Shin megami tensei, but old old school style was vaparoium. The latter was ok, not anything exciting to write home about. Part of the problem was the repetitive nature of the dungeon, yes its a dungeon and i'm starting at brick walls but it could have been more compelling brick walls.

i had a great time with legend of grimrock (the sequel easily being the superior one to play).

I did play Ludis mortis demo and although the ancient roman aesthetics is appealing, the gameplay wasn't quite there for me.

i do have a few other dungeon crawlers i want to play:

Darkest dungeon. I bought it some years ago and haven't gotten round to play it.
Dungeon master 1 and 2 on the Dos i need to play. might seek out the amiga edition for full nostalgia.
Hired guns is appealing but again, dated these days.
legend of amberland - for the snes feel for things. Not sure what its like tbh.
The fall of the Dungeon guardians has been on my wishlist for a while but not gotten around to buying it,

there was a scifi one i bought some years ago... just can't remember the name... EDIT: Conglomerate 451. Apparently not as good as StarCrawlers which is only 1.49 till feb 06 Whether i want it now? i dunno...
