No need to be super picky about it, but cables affect airflow, which affects component temperatures. Even tho everything works, higher temps will usually shorten lifespans.
Yeah, that's a good point. I've never thought of it that way. But the way I do it, I don't think airflow is affected that much. I usually shove everything out of the way, especially making sure wires don't get caught up in the fans. I just don't take extra care in wire tying everything perfectly so the cables are invisible. They'll be out of the way, but it's not going to look pretty.
 
underneath my desk is a mass of wires that look like a huge birds nest but i left it like that because if you coil wires up so they look nice and tidy you can create earth loops that lead to all sorts of problems , i have a big piece of plywood stood in front of the wires so you can see them
