Question Upgrading x470 motherboard CPU options

I've got an MSI x470 Gaming Pro with a 2600X CPU (stock cooler) and was wondering if there was any reason not to upgrade it with a 5600G CPU given how cheap they are at the moment? (as I type they are $220-240).

I've got a 2070 Super video card so will disable the onboard GPU. The motherboard doesn't support PCI 4 so no need to get the regular 5000-series variants (like the 5600x).

Thoughts? Am I missing something?

The 5600G took the place of the 5600 non X as they didn#t release one. Its not exactly the same as the 5600X, . It has less L2 and L3 cache and a lower clock speed so doesnt perform as well.

Still its a pretty big upgrade over your 2600X, and if its a lot cheaper than a 5600X then go for it.

Make sure you update to the latest BIOS on your motherboard before you remove the old chip though. It wont work with the new CPU otherwise.

That's what I figured - if I can't take advantage of the PCI 4 and not using the iGPU - is the 32MB vs 16MB L3 cache worth the $90-100 price difference (with the 5600G @ $220). Of course, now that I'm down the rabbit hole and start looking at the 5600X - does the 5700G make sense?

If I had an x570 board - then I wouldn't even consider these G-variants - and then there's another .... squirrel!

I wouldnt consider the 5700G unless it really wasnt much more, rather jump to the 5600X in that case. Anyway you go youll get a nice upgrade, good luck 🙂

And of course microcenter just now posted an in-store 5700G for $280 (and 5600G @$200, but not in stock here). Sadly, the 5800X isn't supported on my particular motherboard.

Its supported on the latest beta BIOS same as the other 5000 series chips. Scroll to the bottom of the compatibility list. If you went for the 5800X you'd need to pick up a slightly better cooler as well though.

Would have to be a really good deal to be worth it IMO

Yeah, the 5600G appeared in stock so went ahead and placed my order to pickup tomorrow.
Of course, the 5800x is only $300, but I would still need a decent aftermarket cooler for another $50-60.
Most likely, I'll stick with the 5600G, flash the bios, pop it in, and call it a day.

... and yup worked like a charm.
Went into BIOS and confirmed settings (most were set to Auto anyway - other than XMP and disabling on-board audio).
Flashed BIOS and put settings back to confirm stability with OS and new BIOS.
Swapped out CPU and confirmed settings again (they reset after CPU swap).

Ran into a little snag with having to swap the HDMI cable back and forth from video card to onboard before the setting to disable the onboard VGA took - but overall no unexpected issues.
