Competition

The PC Gamer Best PC Builds - $1000 Streaming and Gaming Build

Welcome to very first PC Gamer Best PC Builds competition!

We're down to the final five. Vote now to decide the winner in each category. Here are the top five streaming and gaming builds:

It's an open secret that here at PC Gamer we love PC Building. Building your own PC makes for a fun weekend project, and nets you the biggest performance bang for your buck. It's hard to match the sweet satisfaction of customizing each component to fit your specifications and needs. We want to share the joy of PC Building with the entire community, which is why we're challenging you to submit your best performing builds at the lowest possible price in a number of categories.

The competition will run from April 17th till April 27th. This means you have 10 days to submit your builds!

We've extended the submission period until May 4th! May the fourth be with you and may your builds bring order to the galaxy!

At the end of the competition the winners and their builds will be featured on the PC Gamer home page. Submit your build and get that clout!

This is the $1000 Gaming and Streaming Build
We're looking for the best streaming and gaming build for under $1000. We will favor submissions that include capture cards and can game in 4K.

How does it work?
We're gonna break this competition down into 4 parts:
  1. Submit your builds
  2. After a week of submissions, the PC Gamer staff will pick their top 5 in each category. We will judge primarily on quality of components, price, and theoretical system performance.
  3. Users vote on their favorite build of the top 5.
  4. We feature the winning builds in each category on the PC Gamer homepage.

How do I submit a build?

  1. Head to the PCPartPicker System Builder.
  2. Build your system!
  3. When you're all set, smash that BB code button
    EFYHjue.png
  4. Copy the BB code
  5. Head to this thread, respond hit the BB code toggle in the tool bar
    KEAhrBy.png
  6. Paste the BB code and post your thread!

Ground Rules - Read this or you will be disqualified :)

  • Only one build per budget category, per user. Multiple builds from a single user or duplicate accounts will be disqualified.
  • Do not go over budget.
  • Use list prices only: coupons, rebates, bundles or any other limited-time offers will not be accepted.
  • Do not include shipping or tax in your final budget.
  • Do not include the Operating System, Monitor or VR Headset, Keyboard, Mouse or Gamepad.
  • All builds must have a name.
  • Do not put your forum handle in the name of your build, and avoid odd capitalizations & symbols.
  • We encourage users to use PCPartPicker's System Build for speedy construction.
  • Do not post a link to your build, but rather please be sure to export as BBCode for a quick copy/paste to the forums

Here are links to all three build categories:

$500 Min Spec Console Killer
$1000 Streaming and Gaming Build
$2000 Ultra High Quality Cyberpunk 2077 Build

Good luck and may the best build win!

We're looking for the best streaming and gaming build for under $1000. We will favor submissions that include capture cards and can game in 4K.

Questions:

1) So.. a PC that can do all of i) stream from devices other than itself (hence capture card?), ii) that can game in 4k, and iii) can also stream its own games (resolution unspecified)? Yes?

2) How - realistically - do we handle capture cards with partpicker?

Because there are 2 ways that I can see, neither of which seems very good.

Either they need to be added as manually created custom parts. Which is a PITA for anyone not a US resident trying to find USA prices/stock - and is probably not ideal for checking entries either...

Or, you google the part name and the words "pc partpicker" and hope it has an entry, with stock, and prices.

Many don't, like the Razer Ripsaw - which has 2 entries (A and B) but no prices or stock. Though a quick check on US websites (ones I can get to pretend I live in the US without a VPN...) suggests it's widely out of stock anyway.

The only ones that I could find info for easily were three Elgato ones (A, B, C), two of which don't do 4k passthrough (a problem given the 4k gaming requirement here? - the updated version that does do 4k passthrough isn't on PCPartpicker) and the 3rd costing $400 or 40% of the entire budget.

Edit: Eventually found another option. But the method doesn't seem smooth here. And took a heck of a long time.

Alright, here we go. This is the Archangel HD Streaming and Gaming Rig. Due to the budget, we couldn't fit RTX and a stream card, but instead opted for a really nice GTX series card. We also opted for an SSHD over SSD to be able to pack in the boot speed without spending too much.

To make sure we can stream at max capacity, we chose a powerful CPU over GPU performance. Needless to say, we should be able to get 4k if we push, but this rig is really going to be a streamers heaven.

Note: the BIOS for the MAX motherboards are updated, so there aren't any issues with the 3000 series processors interfering with the BIOS. Hope you enjoy!

Hiltless (from the weapon in Demon Souls + PoE)

With the focus being on both gaming and streaming I decided to favour a slightly weaker GPU for some overclocking headroom to ensure the CPU wasn't bottlenecking perf while streaming.

I believe the gaming res goal is 4k, but is not required for streaming quality due to the fact there's no way to fit a 200-300+ stream card in here.

I believe the gaming res goal is 4k, but is not required for streaming quality due to the fact there's no way to fit a 200-300+ stream card in here.
I figured that - when I said '[streaming] resolutionunspecified' it was kind of sarcastic tbh as the entire brief is really badly specified.

Hence why almost nobody has included a capture card (despite PCG saying they want builds with capture cards).

Which makes sense when you think about it because if you're buying a $1000 PC to game and stream games that are run on that PC, you're not going to spend $200 on a capture card. You'll stream off the CPU (or GPU) like everyone else does.

You'd only get the capture card if you were also capturing another system's gameplay.

And $1000 for a system that captures another system's gameplay, games at 4k (and also streams its own gameplay..?) is ... well... first time I ever came across a brief like that :)

It was everything else I was asking about. Would be interested to hear PCG's answers.

This may be a stupid question, but does it have to be US based? I've got a €1000 build on europe prices, but some parts may not even be available in US while they are in Europe. Also, a lot of readers are from Europe I think :) Taxes are actually included because VAT.

With $1000, I feel like there is still a magic ceiling where if you cut costs wrong, you'll end up with a gimped rig. I started with a 2070 super, then realized when I crammed the parts in, I was way over budget. With this being a middle of the road build, yet still needing some POWAHHH, I went with a 2060 super and a Ryzen 5.

Looking back 20 years ago though, this is mind blowing for $1000.

The Graduate.

Notes: No capture card become I'm expecting people to play and stream mostly PC games.

3600 CL16 RAM is the optimal speed for Ryzen 3: Ryzen likes fast ram, but anything faster than 3600 results in the system actually slowing down due to how infinity fabric works.

At this price point anything less than a quality 80+ Gold PSU is silly.
