depends on the game really, not all games need an ssd to launch off but if its star citizen you want nvme lol

I find most games are okay off hdd

Don't run windows on a hdd though

In short, speed.

Windows will work on HDD, but everything will be much slower, especially bootup. Software—programs, games etc—will also be slower to launch. Transferring data to and from HDD will also be slower.

boot times is one reason,
on hdd... a minute or so,
on ssd can be about 30 seconds
on nvme can be about 15 seconds

everything faster on ssd/nvme
desktop seems more responsive

once you used windows on ssd, you don't want to go back.

Mum's PC has a hdd, we start it and walk away for a while to let it load desktop, it takes a while and she doesn't really have a lot on her PC.
My PC has NVME, it starts so fast I don't need to go anywhere. Walk away too long and screen might turn off again.
