I am sure I heard he was actually interested in them
Quite possibly, anyone serious about the industry would have to study and evaluate them.

I read it that Sid's point is summarized as "we need to be sure we realise how critical gameplay is". That doesn't preclude monetization, and of course can't since US public companies are required by law to maximize shareholder value.
